lie it known that I. (henna-2 W. Scnnmlso. a citizen of the l'nitcll Slates. residing at lhilzulelphia. in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in De vices for Removing (tear-\l'heels, &c.. of which the following is a specification.
()ne object of my invention is to provide a device for removing gear wheels. pulleys, couplings, etc. from shafts. and which can he operated easily and quickly.
A further ohject is to so construrt my invention that it may he applied and opera d without injuring the shaft to whit-h it is applied or the :lllll'h hie-h is to lie rcnunwl from the shaft.
Another object is to make my improved device of a simple and durahlc construction which is portable.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a shaft having a gear wheel 2 thereon. said geanwheel heing fixed to the shaft by means of a hey 3 as is the usual custom of attaching a gear wheel t a shaft. The cross levers 20 and 21 are held upon the bolts hy nuts 23. said nuts being designed to engage recessed portions 24 formed in the outer surface 95 of the cross levers. Each of the cross levers 20 and 21 has an elongated convex or outwardly curved sin Face 20 which is designed to engage the surface 27 oi the gear wheel as learly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The arms 9 and 9 some as guiding arms a ml are located to the rear of the linhs H and 15. These guiding arms have guiding surfaces which are curred in arcs concentric with the axes of the respective bolts 10 and ll. a clearly shown in Fig. 2. These guiding surfaces 29 terminate in recesses 29 so that the holts l6 and 17 will be guided by and confined adjacent the guiding sur 1' aces Q8 and the recesses 29 form pockets to limit the outward swing of the plates 14 and 15 on the holts 1t) and 11 as pivots.
The huh 5 has a. cylindrical hole 30 in which is slidahly mounted. a plunger 31. This plunger with the exception of an angular cut-out portion 32 is cylindrical and slidahly fits the cylindrical hole 30, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The cut-out portion 212 provides a shoulder 33 and also pen mils room to prevent keys on exceptionally small shafts to pass within the cylindrical hole 30 so as to permit the complete with drawal of the gear or other article from the shaft. as will hereinafter he fully explained.
The plunger 31 has a cylindrical hole 3'! in which is slidahly mounted a centering pin :55 which has a conical end 36 which is de signed to engage the center hole 37 in the shaft 1. (entering holes as illustrated in 37 are usually provided in the ends of shafts for receiving an instrument to ascertain the speed of the shaft.

The con tering-pin 35 is cut away throughout a portion of its length, as shown at 39, and the limiting screw 40 is inserted through the plunger 31 so as to be engaged by a shoulder 41 formed by said cut-out portion 39 of the center-in; pin.
The hub 5 has a scl'mV-thrcadetL hole 42 in which is mounted a comparatively heavy screw 43. The hole 42 leads into the cylindrical hole 3 so that the screw 43 can engage the inner end of the plunger 31 and causes the latt r to be moved longitudinally within the hub 5. A retaining set screw it extends into the hole 30 and is designtal to b: abntted b the shoulder 33 of the plunger 31. Thus the retaining screw -l-l prevents the plunger 31 from accidentally falling out of the hub 5 but permits relatively longitudinal movement between the plunger 31 and the hub 5. as will be described hereinafter.
The arms (3 have holes -15 extending therethrough either of which is adapted to receive a lever-'46. This lever it? is adapted to ex tend to the floor or any other stati nary object. and permits the nuts l2, l3, l8. and 19 to he turned without the rotation of the entire head 4.
In the operation of my invention it will be readily understood that by turning the nuts on the respective bolts, the head i and cross levers 20 and 2] will he moved toward each other causing the plunger 31 to abut the end ot the shaft l and since the convex surface 26 of the cross levers 2 1 and 31 engage the surt'ace 27 of the car 2. the gear will he forced longitudinally along the shaft 1 and finally removed from the end of the shaft. In the use of my invention it is preferable to first start the gcar'wheel 2 by the rotation of the nuts 1'2, 13 18, and 19 and after the gear has been started in its movement from the shaft it is merely necessary to turn the screw so that it Wlll engage the end of the plunger 31; this will cause a rela tivo movement between the head 4 and the plunger 31, and. the gear can be easily removed by the. action of the screw 43.
It is understood of course thatthe initial movement of the gear 2 longitudinally of the shaft requires greater power than after the gear has been initially moved; hence the bolts and nuts may be used to initially move the ear and afterward the screw 43 can be as and, with a. single operation the gear can be entirely removed.
If an extremely wide face gear or a long coupling is to be ren'ioved. a filling block 4-7 can be interposed between the inner end of the plunger ill and the inner end of the cylindrical hole 30, as clearly shown in Fig. 8. To permit the entrance of this filling liloch l7 a cavity i8 is formed through the hub. as clearly shown in Figs 2 and 8.
By providing the cross levers Q0 and. All with the convex engaging surfaces 26 vurious degrees of leverage can be obtained since the convex surfaces fulcrum on the surface :37 of the gear or a similar surface ot any other article which it is desired to remove. Furthermore by providing the guiding arms 8 with the guiding surfaces 28 the bolts 16 and 17 can be swung into positions attaching the circumference of the gear win-ch as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and therelr, secures a direct leverage at points adjacent the gear.

While 1 have described my in ention as taking a particular l'orin, it. will be understood that the various parts of my invention may he changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit mysell to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I an] t liberty to make such changes and 'alteratituis as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.

A device, adapted to remove an article from a shaft, including a head having a hub and arms projecting from the hub; means carried by said headfor abutting an end of said shaft; clamping bolts supported by certain of said arms and extending substantiall in the direction of the-length of said shaft; links pivoted on each of said clamp ing bolts; other bolts carried by said links; the other of said arms being adapted to he slidably engaged by said links and having guiding surfaces for said latter mentioned bolts, and cross levers carried jointly by respective bolts on said first mentioned arms and said links, said cross levers being adapted to engage a surface. of said article remote from said end of the shaft; said seeond'men tinned arms having recesses therein providing pockets for the second mentioned bolts and thereby limiting the pivotal movement of said links in one direction, substantially as described.
