IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,780, dated May 14, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDERSON BROWN, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing- Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference.
marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washing machine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section of my washing-machine.
i A represents a box, of any suitable dimensions, resting upon legs B B. On each side of the box A, at the bottom, is a fluted or corrugated board, 0, extending the entire length of the box, and the surface of which stands at about an angle of forty degrees. At each end of the box A is pivoted a lever, D, the lower ends of which levers are connected by a bar, E, the sides of which are beveled and stand at the same angle, reversed, as the corrugated or fluted surfaces 0 0. When the levers are in n1otion-.that is, moved back and forth-the smooth surfaces of the bar E, acting against or in combination with the fluted surfaces 0 0, cause the clothes on both sides to turn over in the water at each action of the levers.
Above the bar E, and about one-fourth or onehalf of an inch apart, are round or angular bars Gr G, connecting the two levers D D, which allow the water to pass freely through at each action of the levers. Around the inside of the box, near the upper edge, is a frame,
H, which at the ends passes on the inner sides of the levers. The spaces one-ach side of each lever are covered by rubber straps a a, fastened to the levers and the box, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the water is prevented from splashing out when the machine is in operation. On one side of the box A is an L-shaped attachment, I, to which a wringer may be attached, said attachment being slightly elevated, and the surface of the horizontal portion slightly sloping, so that the water from the wringer will pass into the machine. A frame, J, as shown in Fig. 1, is attached to the upper ends of the levers D D, by means of which the same are operated. K is the lid of the box, hinged on one side, resting upon the interior frame II, and fastened by a hook, I), which makes the lid or cover sufficiently tight to prevent any water from being thrown out while the, machine is in operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in the box A, of the levers D D and J, with beveled bar E, bars Gr G, and fluted or corrugated boards 0 (J, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The rubber bands a a, arranged on each side of the levers D D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the box A, fluted boards O O, levers D D, bands (1, bars E and G G, frames II J, wringer-attachment I, and cover K with catch 1), all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. 1
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of March, 187 2.
ANDERSON BROWN.
