This invention relates to strip punching apparatus and particularly to apparatus vhich is arranged to contain and operate upon a roll of transfers in continuous strip form. The invention furthermore relates to an improvement in the punching apparatus disclosed in my co-pending'applicalion Serial No. 103,222, filed June 12, 1916.
in object of the. invention is to provide in a strip punching apparatus an improved means to position the strip beneath the pimching mechanism which meansis characterized in that it may operate directly upon the strip itself to positively arrest the atter without injury to the strip.
Another object of the inventionis to provide in a strip punching apparatus, punching mechanism involving a plurality of punches adapted for simultaneous actuatiomnmans to arrest the strip when it comes into proper position beneath the punching mechanism, devices operable from said means to positively lock the strip against further movement, and a lever arranged to simultaneously actuate said punches and to relea e-the arresting and locking means to it an unpunched' strip to be positioned beneath the said mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide in a strip punching device, a casing, a die plate thereon having a channel to receive the trip, punching mechanism mounted above the channel, means in the rear of said mechanism to support the strip in roll form and a cover to inclose the supporting means. a part of said casing being removable and removably connected to the punching mechanism. the structure being characterized by permitting convenient access to the strip and to the supporting means.
.1 further object of the invention is to provide in a device of the class described generally improved and simplified mechanical structure for the desired functions.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following description and in the appended claims.

Referring to these drawings, the improved apparatus comprises, in general, means to receive and support transfers in continuous strip or other convenient form, punching mechanism beneath which the stripmay be drawn from said means, devices to automatically position and hold the strip in correct alinen'ient with the punching mechanism and strip releasing mechanism operable only by actuation of the punching mechanism to permit a punched Strip to be withdrawn and an unpunched strip to be positioned beneath the punching mechanism.
The general frame structure of the apparatus will first be described with particular reference to-Figs. 1, 2, s, 5, and 8. Referonce 15 designates a rectangularly shaped casing which is open from top to bottom. Intermediate the upper and lower edges of the casing are interiorly extending ledges 16 (Figs. 5 and S) and secured to the latter, as indicated in Fig. 8, is a plate 17 which extends from a point adjacent the rear wall of the casing through and beyond the front wall thereof. shown, in Figs. 1, 2, and 8. The base of casing 15 is closed by a plate 18 removably secured by screws 19 to suitable posts depending from ledges 16, as best shown in Fig. 4. The forward portion of casing 15 is cut away, as shown in Figs. 1, 5, and 10, so that its upper edge lies flush with plate 17. A. substantially U-shaped frame 20 of the cross-sectional shape shown in Figs. and isadapted to fit in the cut-away portion of casing and is secured to the ledges 16 by screws 21 (Figs. 2 and 10). Frame serves to remorabl v secure the punching mechanism to plate 17 as will appear. The rear upper portion of the casing is closed by ahinged cover 22 which also overlaps a portion of frame 20 to include certain parts of the the same as that disclosed in my aboveidentitied copending application and will be herein described only in general terms sutlicientlr to enable a clear understanding of the invention to be obtained. This mechanism is mounted in three spaced parallel plates 26, 27, and 28 (Figs. 4cand 5), and the upper and lower plates 26 and 28 are fastened by screws. as indicated in Fig. 10 to upright posts 29 which are arranged one at each corner of the plates. The punching mechanism is self-contained and is adapted to fit as unit within. the ll-shaped frame 20, as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5. Pins 30 extend outwardly from the sides of lower plate 28 near the rear thereof and engage in suitable slots formed in frame 20 as shown in Fig. 10, so that the punching mechan sm may be held to frame 20. The punching mechanism in frame 20 is clamped to plate 17 by the screws 21 described and, to prevent longitudinal displacementot the nieclianism dowels 31 (Fig. l) in plate 17 are arranged to fit in suitable recesses in lower plate 28. The in'ermediate plat 27 is slidable on a central post (Fig. 5) secured to and extending between the upper and lower plates. Sui table holes are formed in plate 17 in alinement with these punches. V The latter. as disclosed in the above-identified application... are arranged in groups with movable selectors, whereby any desired punch of a group may be connected for actuation by plate 27. For example. in Figs. 1 and 2 are selectors 37. 38, 89. and all) which may control the month, day, hour, and minute group of punches. and ii a selector which controls the ELM. or P.2d. printed designation on the transfer strip. The selector 88 is shown in Fig. 9; and for the present purposes. it will snliice to state that it may be ras'nsea moved to overlie any desired punch of its group and has a part ll engageable by the intermediate plate 27 to depress the selected punch. For a more detailed disclosure of the selectors, reference is made to the aboveidentitied application. Other punches 42 indicate those punches. for eXa- .ple. as are adapted to punch the destination designations on the transfer strip, and those are mounted in the plates-26. 27, and 28, as shown inFigs. l and 5 and are arranged for manual. operation independently of the suitable holes l3 be depression of plate 1 ing formed in plate 1: Fig. 8) to aline with these punches. It is to be noted that the month and day selectors 37 and 38 are included within cover 22 and, therefore. rendered inaccessible except, to authorized persons.
The mechanism for depressing the intermediate plate 27 to siniultaneousl actuate the selected punches of the several groups will now be described with particular reference to Figs. to 8, inclusive. Secured to the outer face on each side of lower plate 28 are bracket l6, and frame 20 is suitably recessed. as shown in Figs. 5 and 8, to receive the brackets. lteterring to Fi l. the described pins 30 are located nea the rear end of plate 28 and the frame 20. has been recessed, as best shown in Fig. 8, so that the frame and plate 20 can be moved. the one relatively to the other to withdraw pins 30 from their slots. A. pin 47 is riveted to the bracket 7 46 and extends inwardly therefrom (Fig. 5). Loosely mounted on eachpin $7 is a ratchet l8 and gear 4E9 which, as shown in Fig. 5, are pinned together. A. wheel 50 is also loosely mounted on each pin l7 and is provided with a spring pressed pawl 51 (Fig. 7) to engage the teeth of ratchet d8. r r
Referring to Fig. 6, each wheel 50 has 2 formed on its inner face a suitable cam 52 which extends into the, ll-shaped piece 45) and is adapted to engage the cross piece of the latter to depress the intermediate plate when the wheel is rotated. Cam 52 may advantageously be formed in the shape of a modified equilateral triangle as shown. Horizontall slidahle in guides formed in bracket $6 is a rack 53 which engages gear d9. Rack 53 is reciprocable by means to be described and, when moved in the direction of the arrow (Figs. 6 and 7), the wheel 50 will be turned by reason of the engagement of pawl 51 with ratchet 48. When moved in the opposite directionthe teeth of the ratchet snap freely by the pawl withoutturning the wheel. The racks 53 are given just sutlicient movement to turn cams 52 through-an angle of degrees, so that Bams, starting from the position shown in Fig. 6, depress plate 27 and thereafter are carried into a position similar to the starting posit-ion, whereby plate 27 is free to rise. Thus, by pulling rack. 53 rearwa-rdly; plate 2.7 will be lowered, the members passing freely through notches formed in plates 1'7, and 28', as shown. in. Figs. 5 and; 8, and the return of plate 27 is effected by the springs described.
The racks 53 extend: rearwardly beyond thepunching mechanism (-Fig. 4:): and have a pin and slot connection with crank arms 55. The latter are integrally formed on a shaft 56 pivoted at 57 tothe walls of casing 15 and extending therebetween below plate. 17. The supporting devices for the trans-fer roll will. next be described with particular: reference to Figs. 4. and 11. The transfers in continuous strip form are woundupon a core 65 the transfer strip beingv indicated; reference 66. The core 65 is rotatably. supported. at its ends by a pair of. studs 67 and 68which enter openings in the end of the core, as shown in Fig. 11. The means for positioning the transfer strip. properly beneath the punching mechanism and for locking the strip against withdrawal will now be descibedwith reference to Figs-..et, 8, and 9. The transfer strip, as disclosed in the above-identified copending. application, is perforated transversely at suitable-intervals to provide for convenient severing; of the strip intolunittransfers and adjacent each. line of perforations, a hole is formed centrally in the'strip for cooperative engagement with the positioning devices. The length of each transfer unit is substantially equal to the distance from the forward edge of' guide 74 to the forward edge of plate 17 so that the hole in the strip lids closely adjacent the guide. as shown in Fig. 9,. reference 75 designating'the hole in the transfer strip. A. spring. 79 fixed at one end to, arm 77 is connected to studTYS-insuch a manner that red 7 6 is constantly forced rearwardly, and, when positioned as shown in' Fig. 9. abuts the forward end of. the paper guide 74?- The hub of arm 77 is pivotally supported in a. bracket 80 (Figs. 4- and' 8) fixed. toplate 17 and fromthis hub a second: and shorter arm 81 extendsat substantially right angles'to arm 7.7.
A. positive locking means is provided for the transferstripito prevent rotation of the transfen roll. Referring toFigs. 4 and 1 1, a ratchet 82 is loosely mounted on the core supporting stud. 67. and; is restrained from axial-movement by a set screw 83 which rides inn groove instud 67. Ratchet 82 has projections84 oneither side ofstud. 67: which enter a slot in the end of. the core 65, as. shown in Fig.11. Thus, the. ratchet andcore are removably coupled in an operable driving: engagement. A. pawl 85 pivoted. to a bracketv 86 fixed to plate 17. is adapted-nor mall toengage the teeth of ratchet 82 by reason of. a springr87 connected to the pawl and to the bracket 69 ,asshown in Fig. 4.
The means for releasing the ratchet 82 and. the positioningrod76-will now be described with reference. to. Figs. 4, 8, and. 9.
The arm 81 and pawl 85 are connected by adjustable connecting rods and 88', respectively, to an arm 89 of a bell cranlr pivoted at 90 to a bracket 91 secured to plate 17. The other arm 92 of the bell crank extends forwardly and substantially horizontally to position adjacent the rear of the punching mechanism. A plate 93 fastened to the upper face of the intermediate plate 27 directly overlies the end of arm 92 so that, plate 27 is depressed by the described mechanism, the bell crank lever is rocked to remove pawl 85 from engagement with its ratchet and to retract the positioning rod Y6 in an obvious manner. As the rod 76 is withdrawn, it is thrown rearwardly by spring 7 9 as far as permitted by the limits of the slot in plate 17 in which the rod is movable and a guard pin 94 is riveted to plate 17 adjacent the rear end of this slot as a precautionary measure in case the rod should be moved slightly below plate 17. The rod 76 is immediately thrown upwardly as soon as the lever 60 is released by the force of spring 87, but this upward movement is limited by engagement of the rod with theportion of transfer strip 68 behind the hole 75 so that the pawl 85 is held out of engagement until the rod enters a succeeding hole 75 in the transfer strip. The forward central portion of the guide 7% is upturned. as indicated at 95 so that the central part of strip 66 is thrown upwardly which, together with the beveled edge of rod '7 6, facilitates entrance of the latter into a succeeding hole 75 in the transfer strip.
' A device is provided to indicate when the punching mechanism has operated. This device in the embodiment illustrated talres the form of a bell 96 (Figs. 5%, 5, and 8) which is secured to the plate 1? and depends into the chip chamber formed between the latter and bottom plate 18. hammer lever 97 is pivoted to plate 1'? at 98 and has a lug 99 (Figs. and 8) which lies in the path of a pin 100 fixed in the crank shaft 56 heretofore described. A spring 101 normally holds lever 97 retracted with the striking end thereof against a suitable buffer 102 on the side of casing 15 (Figs. 5 and 8). As crank shaft 56 is rocked, pin 100 engages lug 99 and swings the lever sharply against the gon 96, thereby indicating that the mechanism has been operated and the transfer strip may be withdrawn. The in dicator is also desirable for the usual reasons as a check on the operator.
The operation of the apparatus will now be described. Assuming that the transfer strip is positioned as shown in the drawings and that the operator has moved the selectors 37, 38, 39, i0, and 41 to overlie the desired punch of each groan-the desired destination punch 42 is then depressed and there.

The return movement of racks 53 will turn the gears e9 idly without moving the cams, due to the pawl 51 and ratchet e8. As plate 2? is lowered, the arm 92 is depressed which removes pawl 85 from engagement withits ratchet and withdraws the member 7 6 from the perforation 75 in the transfer strip. Immediately as the member 76 is withdrawn, it is forced rearwardly by spring 79 so that, when lever 60 is released and the member 76 moves upwardly, the latter will engage the strip in back of its former position. *With this arrangement, the strip is baclred up by guide 'Z' l so that injuredby the engagement of the member 76. it is also to be noted that the guide T l so limits the upward movement of member 76 that the pawl 85 isheld out of engagement with ra chet- 82. lhe strip 66 may, therefore, be drawn forwardly to permit removal of the punched transfer and to bring an unpunched transfer beneath the punching mechanism. its the strip is moved forwardly, a succeeding perforation 7 5 eventually engages the beveled end of the member 76, and further movement of the strip will move the member forwardly against the tension of spring 7 9. As soon as the perforation completely passes beyond guide 74, the member 76 will immediately be forced upwardly by reason of spring 87, and pawl 85 will be simultaneously caused to engage its ratchet to positively prevent further movement of the strip. This particular construction of the member 7 6 and associated parts is important since it permits control of the strip through direct engagement therewith and without any possibility of injury to the strip. The gong 96 is sounded when lever 60 is depressed and indicates that the strip is released ready for withdrawal. It is to be noted that pin 100 does not immediately engage the rug 99 of the gong lever when lever 60 is actuated, but the engagement occurs during the last part of the movement of the lever 60 so that the gong 96 is not sounded until the strip 66 is completely released.
To insert a new roll of transfers, the stud 61 is removed and lever 60 swung rearwardly. Thereafter, cover 22 is unlocked and raised whereby complete access is had .to the roll supporting devices. Arm v70 is then swung outwardly, the core 65 re moved and the new roll inserted in place. By removing the frame 20, the punching it cannot be mechanism is also removed, the racks 53 lifting readily from the pins in arms 55. The strip may then be led forwardly in charmel l3 and properly positioned after which the frame 20 and punching mechanism is replaced. If, for any reason, access to the punching mechanism is desired, it may be removed by sliding it relatively to the frame 20 to withdraw pins 30 from the slots in the latter. After the strip has been positioned as described, the cover 22 is closed-and locked, and stud 61 is replaced so that the normal operation may be resumed.
It is to be noted particularly that the month and day selectors 37 and 38 are locked within cover 22 and are inaccessible to the operator o that dating ahead of transfers is prevented. Moreover, no transfers can be removed from the apparatus until they have been punched since the strip releasing means is operable only by actuation, of the punching mechanism. The gong 86 gives a clear signal on the issuance of each transfer and, if desired, arm 97 may be made to operate a register to count the transfers issued.
The invention has been described in a preiferrec'l form for illustrative purposes, but the scope of the invention is defined by the appended claims rather tian by the foregoing description.
What I claim is y El. In a strip punching device, a casing having means to receive the strip and a passage through which the latter may be passed, a separately operable punching mechanism mounted adjacent said passage, and means operable independently of said mechanism to arrest the strip when it becomes properly positioned relatively to said mechanism and to lock the strip in such position until it is punched.
A strip punching device, comprising, a "asing having means to receive the strip and a passage through which the latter may be passed, punching mechanism mounted adjacent said passage, devices to lock the strip when a portion thereof comes into proper position relatively to the punching mechanism, and means to release said devices when the strip is punched and to hold said devices released until a succeeding portion of the strip becomes properly positioned relatively to the punching mechanism.
3. In a strip punching device, a punching mechanism, relatively powerful means to actuate and restore the latter, a relatively delicate positioning and locking mechanism operable by direct engagement with the strip to properly position the latter with relation to the punching mechanism and to lock the strip when thus positioned, means independent of the punching mechanism to actuate the positioning and locking mechanism, and means controlled by the punching mechanism to reset the last-named -mech'anism for a subsequent cycle "of locking operation with each actuation of the punching mechanism, all constructed and arranged for the control of the delicate mechanism by the powerful means without injury to the strip.
4. In a strip punching device, ing mechanism, means to actuate the latter, relatively heavy devices to restore the mechanism to normal position after the operation of said'means, a positioning and locking means for the strip operable "to arrest the latter when it comes into proper position with relation to said mechanism and to lock the strip until actuation of the mechanism, relatively light devices tending to throw the last-nanied means into locking position, means operable by actuation of said mechanism to release the locking and positioning means, and means controlled by engagement with the strip to hold the locking and positioning means released until a succeeding'portion of the strip be comes properly positioned with relation to the punching mechanism, all constructed and arranged so that the positioning and locking means is controlled by the punching mechanism but is released from the action of the relatively heavy restoring devices to prevent injury to the strip.
5. A strip punching device, comprising, in combination, a casing having means at one end to receive the strip in roll form and acha-n'nel extending to the other end thereof through which the strip may be drawn, punching mechanism mounted adjacent the channel leaving the forward end exposed whereby the strip may be pulled through the channel, a guiding member mounted at jacent the channel and punching mechanism and means to arrest the strip when it comes into proper :al'inement with the punching mechanism, said means comprising a device pivoted for swinging movement toward the strip and member and pivoted for swinging movement in the line of travel or the strip, said device arranged to bear against the strip while the latter is backed up by said guiding member, all constructed and arranged so that as the strip is drawn through the channel a perforation therein is engaged by said device and the latter is drawn forwardly beyond said member so that the device may pass through the perforation to position the strip.
6. A strip punching device, comprising in combination, a casing having means at one end to receive the strip in roll form and a channel extending to the other end thereof through which the strip may be drawn, punching mechanism mounted adjacent said channel leaving the forward end exposed, whereby the strip may be pulled through the channel, means engageable with the strip to arrest the latter when it comes into proper alinement with said mechanism, means operable by the actuation of the ara. punclr restin means to oositivel" h i .l

In a strip punching device, a casing, a punch carrying plate, punches therein, a depressible plate having means to engage and actuate said punches, cams rotatably upported from one of the plates and adapted to engage the sides of the other plate to lower the latter, a gear for each cam, a atchet and pawl connection between each slidable in the casing and in. mesh with the gears, a lever pivoted to the casing and means operable therefrom to reciprocate the racks in unison, all constructed and arranged so that movement of the racks in one direct-ion will rotate the cams to lower the plate and so that the racks may movein the other direction without turning the cams. I
10. A strip punching device, comprising, a casing having means at one end to receive the strip in roll form, and a channel extendand so that, as
thereof, a lever pivnae-wee last-named means, comprising ,a pivoted lever, means tending to swing the latter toa ward the strip, a member pivoted to the end oi the lever and resilient means connecting the lever and member, all constructed and arranged so that the member bears against the strip while it is backed up by said guide the strip is drawn forwardly, a perforation therein engages said member and moves the latter forwardly of the guide so that the member may pass through the perforation.
11. A. strip punching device, comprising, a casing having means at one end to receive the strip in roll form, and a channel extending to the other end thereof through which the strip may pass, punching mechanism mounted adjacent the channel leaving the forward end exposed whereby the strip may be pulled through the channel, a guide mounted adjacent the channel in the rear of said mechanism, means to arrest the strip when it comes into properposition relatively to the punching mechanism, said last-named means comprising a pivoted lever, means tending to swing the latter toward the strip, a member pivoted to the end of the lever and resilient means connecting the lever and member, all constructed and arranged so that the member bears against the strip, while it is backed up by said guide and so that,
the strip is drawn forwardly a perforation therein engages said member and moves the latter forwardly of the guide so that the member ma 1 pass through the perfora tion, and devices operable by the lever when the member passes through the perforation to lock the strip against further movement.
12. El strip punching apparatus comprising in combination, a casing having means at one end to support the strip in roll form and a channel extending to the other end thereof throughwhich the strip may pass, punching mechanism mountedadjacent the channel leaving the forward end exposed whereby the strip may be pulled through said channel, means directly and yieldingly engageable with the strip to arrest the latter when it comes into proper position beneath the punching mechanism, and means oper able by the arresting means to loclr the strip against further movement.

In a strip punching device, a casing open from top to bottom, a die plate secured to the casing to partition the latter, the forward portion of the casing being separable along the plane of the die plate, a punching mechanism removably secured to said separable portion, a removable bottom closure for the casing, means in the latter and in the rear of said mechanism to support the strip in roll form, a channel in the upper face of the die plate through which the strip may pass, and a pivoted cover to close the rear portion of the casing, and to overlie a part of the punching mechanism, all constructed and arranged so that said cover and mechanism may be conveniently removed to exposethe strip and said means.

In a strip punching device, a casing, a supporting member removably mounted therein, supporting, guiding, positioning, and locking devices for the strip, all mounted on said member, a unitary self-contained punching mechanism including punch operating devices, all constructed and arranged so that the first-named devices may be conveniently assembled 011 said member and positioned as a unit Within the casing and so that the punching mechanism may be separately assembled and applied to said member as a unit and means in the casing to actuate the operating devices, the latter and said means being removably connected to permit ready removal and replacement of the punching mechanism when desired.

In a strip punching device, a casing, a supporting member removably mounted therein, supporting, guiding, positioning, and locking devices for the strip, all mounted on said member, and a unitary Selfcontained punching mechanism removably mounted on said member, all constructed and arranged so that said devices may be conveniently assembled on said member and the latter With the devices thereon may be positioned as a unit Within the casing and so that the punching mechanism may be separately assembled and applied to said member as a unit.

In a strip punching device, a casing having means to receive the strip, a punching mechanism including punch operating devices mounted in the casing, the latter having a part cooperating With said mechanism to afford a continuous slot adjacent the latter through which the strip from said means may pass with its edges and both faces confined, a device adapted to engage in a perforation in the strip-to lock the latter When it comes into proper position relatively to the punching mechanism, and means independent of the punching mechanism to yieldingly force said device against the strip.
17. In a device of the class described, a casing having a channel through which a strip may pass, mechanism mounted adjacent the channel to operate on the strip therein, a guiding member to confine the strip in the channel, and means to aut0- matically lock the strip When it comes into a predetermined position in the channel, said means comprising a part yieldingly bearing against the strip While the latter is backed up by said guide and arranged to engage a perforation in the strip, said part being movable by the strip to carr Y the former beyond said member and into strip locking position, and resilient means tending to restrain movement of said part by the strip, whereby when said part is Withdrawn from the perforation the last-named means may move it away from the perforation and out of strip locking position, and means controlled by the operation of said mechanism to Withdraw said part.
