vacuum HAND-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1918.
Application filed August 14, 1917. Serial No. 186,108.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssrr. B. SCULLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Vacuum Hand-Brushes, of W ich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vacuum hand brushes, and my object is to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive, and efiicient device of this character which may be employed to advantage for general purposes, such as cleaning clothes, auto seats, etc.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a rotary brush in connection with suction means, which latter removes dust, lint, and other foreign matter loosened by the brush from articles being cleaned.
In order that the invention may be'fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a central, longitudinal, sectional view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a broken, inverted, plan view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a broken plan view of certain parts employed in carrying out'the invention.
Referring now in detail to the various parts, 1 designates a rotary brush, the back 2 of which has perforations 3 for the passage of dust and other foreign matter loosened by the brush bristles 4, which are arranged in groups interspersed among said perforations 3..
The back 2 of the .brush fits within a hollow head 6, the upper rearwardly-extending neck 7 of which is removably connected to the forward end of a hollow handle 9. The rear end 10 of said handle 9 is reduced to receive a coupling 12, removably connected thereto by suitable means, such as a bayonet-joint 14. The coupling 12 is providcd at its underside with a reduced neck 16, through which dust and other foreign matter is deflected by a strainer 17, extending obliquely across the interior of the coupling 12 from a point adjacent to the upper forward portion thereof to a point at the rear portion of the neck 16.
19 designates a bag or other suitable receptacle, the upper, metallic end of which is removably-connected to the neck 16 by suitable means, such as a bayonet-joint 20. The rear end of the coupling 12 has a marfall within the spirit and scope ginal bead 22 to hold thereon the forward end of a flexible suction tube 24.
26 designates a flexible shaft extending through the hollow handle 9 and the hollow head 6, and fixed at its lower forward end to the back 20f the brush 1 to rotate the same. Supports 30 and 31 hold the forward portion of said flexible shaft 26 centrally within the hollow head 6. The rear endof the flexible shaft 26 is provided with a socket 32 to receive the forward end of a flexible drive shaft 34, extending through the suction tube 24 and the strainer 17, and provided at its forward end with a laterally projecting lug 38, which fits into a slot 39 in the socket 32 for the purpose of rotating the latter and the flexible shaft 26.
The suction tube 24 and the flexible drive shaft 34 are of suitable length and connected at their rear ends to a fan and a motor, respectively, (not shown); In practice the fan creates a section through the tube 24, the hollow handle 9, the head 6, and the perforations 3 in the brush back 2, and draws therethrough all dust, lint, and'other foreign matter loosened by the rotary brush 1 from an article being cleaned. As such foreign matter enters the coupling 12, it impinges against the strainer 17 and is deflected thereby into the receptacle 19, while the air passes through the perforations in the strainer 17 and backwardly through the suction tube 24. After the receptacle 19 becomes filled with dust, it may be uncoupled from the neck 16 and emptied.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that I have produced a device well adapted for the purpose intended, and while I have shown and described the preferred form of device, I reserve the right to make such changes in the construction, combination, and arrangementpf parts as properly of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patvided with inlet openings, bristles fixed to i In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, said brulsh 330k in groups Iionterspersed bfiain the presence of two witnesses, tween t e et openings, earings in t e hollow head, and a, flexible shaft mounted in JESSIE 6 said bearings and extending through the Witnesses:
hollow handle and the head, and fixed to F, G. Flscmm, the brush back to drive the same. v L. J i Fmomm.
