Description

J. 0; HICKS. VEHICLE AXLE. APPLICATION FILED MAY 6. 1 914.
Patented May 21,1918.

JOHN G. HICKS, 0F LEVON, FLORIDA.
VEHICLE-AXLE.
Application filed liiiay 8, 1914. Serial No. 836,715.
To all wiiom it my concern:
Be it known that I, Jenn O. a citizen of the United States, residii at Levon, in the county of Marion and State of Florida, have invented new and u tul Improvements in Vehicle-Axles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved axle adapted to be made. of any suitable size and for use on carriages, wagons and other vehicles, the object of the invention being to provide an improved axle which comprises a main member and a pair of spindles detachably secured to the main member and so that the spindle members may be removed when desired.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of an axle constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the same on a larger scale and with the clips shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a detail plan of one of the detachable members.
Fig. i is a bottom plan View of the main member. v
The main member 1 of my improved axle is provided on its under side at its ends with rabbets 2 and with downwardly extending shoulders 3 on its under side and which form the inner ends of the rabbets. The outer sides of the shoulders are beveled inwardly and-upwardly as shown at 4: in the same direction and at the same angle of inclination and the ends of the main member are correspondingly beveled as at 5. A transverse groove 6 which is V-shaped cross sect-ionally extends across the under side of the member 1 near each end thereof and has one side wall formed with the same angle of inclination as the beveled end of the rabbet.
Each detachable member 7 has a spindle 8, an arm 9 to fit in one of the rabbets 2 and a shoulder 10 to bear against one end of the member 1. Each shoulder 10 is undercut on its inner side by being provided with a bevel 11 and the inner end of each arm 9 is also beveled as at- 12 to form an undercut for engagement with the beveled side 4 of the shoulder 3. On the opposite side of each arm 9 is a transverse-tongue 13 to enter one of the grooves 6 having one side wall formed with the sameangle of" inclination as the beveled portion on theend of the rabbet and to cooperate therewith in enabling the spindle to be connected with the main member. v
Grooves 14 are also provided in the upper side of the axle under the joints between the main member and the detachable spindle members. Clip bolts 15 have their upper portions fitted in said grooves In Said clip bolts are arranged under the j oints and coact with bars 16 and nuts 17 to securely and yet detachably fasten the spindle members to the endsof the main member and permit their ready removal when this is desired. The interengaging projections 13 and grooves or recesses 6 prevent longitudinal slipping of the spindle members and the overhanging relation of the 'arms and shoulders of the spindle members to the clipping portions of the main member also greatly increases the strength of the joints and causes only moderate stress to be imface of the axle over its rabbet having a longitudinal groove and a transverse groove of if-shape whose outer wall parallels said bevels; of a spindle, a stockcarrying the same and rabbeted on its upper side with its shoulder and extremity beveled to complemen, the bevels of the axle, tongues on its upper face to fit said grooves when the parts are assembled, and clips for holding the parts together.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
