ETHAN ALLEN JUDD, `OF OLAN, NEW YORK.
AXLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,307, dated June 16, 1903. Application filed January 13, 1903. Serial No. 138.908. (No model.)`
To a/ZZ whom t may concern.:
Be it known that l, ETHAN ALLEN JUDD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Olean, in the county of Oattaraugns and State of New York, have invented a new and obviate the use of special fasteningv devices for securing the reinforce-bar in position in the axletree and thimble.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more ,fully described hereinafter and then pointedout in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Vsimilar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the improvement.- Fig. 2 is an inverted sectional plan View of one of the skeins and part of the wooden axletree and its reinforce-bar. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section of the same on the line 8 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a like view of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the reinforce-bar, and Fig. 6 isa sectional plan view of one of the thimbles.
The Wooden axletree A of the improved axle is provided with tapering ends A', on which fit metallic skeins or thimbles B, and on the under side of the axletree Ais formed reception of the Vertical member C of a reinforce-bar C, made of metal and having a T- shaped cross-section, as plainly illustrated in the drawings. The horizontal member C2 of the reinforce-bar C ts against the dat under side of the axletree A, and the ends C3 of the said horizontal member are tapered and fit into correspondingly-shaped recesses B, formed in the upper faces of the bottoms of the skeins or thimbles B. The vertical member C' of the reinforce-bar C has the top of its terminals Q4 slightly beveled to readily extend the terminals a distance into the tapering ends A about half-way of the journaled portions ofthe skeins B, as plainly indicated in Fig. l. Now by having the tapering ends C3 of the horizontal member C2 of the reinforce-bar lit into the recesses in the skeins B it is evident that no additional or supple- `mentary fastening devices are required to securely hold the several parts in position, and at the same time the axletree is greatly reinforced, especially by extending the terminals C4 into the ends A', as the breaking-point is usually at or near the inner ends of the skeins.
By the arrangement described the skeins B are prevented from turning on the axletree A, as the ends C3 of thereinforce-bar C fitting the recesses B prevent such movement, and any turning strain is taken up by the reinforce-bar C instead of by 'the wooden axletree A.
In manufacturing `the axle it is only necessary to cut a longitudinal slot in the under side of the Wooden axletree A for the reception of the Vertical member C of the reinforcebar, and when the skeins B are driven onto' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters *Patentl. A thimble-skein axle comprising an axletree having tapering ends, a recess extending longitudinally in the bottom of the axletree and in portions of the ends, a reinforcebar substantially T-shaped in cross-section and having its Vertical member fitted into said recess, the top of the said verticalmember at the ends being beveled and the horizontal member tapering at the ends, and axle thimbles or skeins fitting over the said tapering ends of the axletree and extending inward, beyond the ends of the reinforce-bar, the said thimbles or skeins being formed With recesses in the upper faces of their bottoms, for the reception of the terminals of the horizontal member of the reinforce-bar, as set forth.
2. A thimble-skein axle comprising an axletree having tapering ends, a reinforce-bar approximately T-shaped in cross-section and having its horizontal member tapering at the ends, the reinforce-bar fitting a recess in the under side of the aXletree, and a thimble or skein having a recess in the upper face of its bottom, for the reception of the tapered end of the reinforce-bar, as set forth.
3. Athimble-skein axle comprising an axletree having tapering ends, a reinforce-bar approximately T-shaped in cross-section and having its horizontal member tapering at the ends, the reinforce-bar fitting a recess in the under side of the axletree, and a thimble or skein having a recess in the upper face oi" its bottom, for the reception of the tapered ends of the reinforce-bar, the horizontal member of the said reinforce-bar fitting the at under side of the axletree, as set forth.
4. A thirnble-skein axle provided with a thimble or skein, the skein having a recess in the upper face of its bottom, for the reception of a reinforce-bar, the said recess extending inward from the inner end of the skein and having its side Walls tapering, as set forth.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
