To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MINE- xIME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Water Valley, in the county of Erie, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water- Regulators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enab e others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to water regulators of the type wherein a float is employed to control a valve which in turn controls the admission of fluid to a vessel or the admission of a motive fluid such as steam to a pump for pumping water into a vessel,`the height of the contents of the vessel regulating the position of the float.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devicesof this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a float controlled water regulator including a valve operative] connected to the float and means to vary t e extent of movement of the valve while at the same time maintaining the extent of movement of the float.
A third important ob'ect of the invention is to not only provi e means for varying the extent of movement of the valve but also means for varying the terminal positions of such valve, as for instance the valve may have an extent of movement equal to one-half inch but the points at which this mifement begins and ends may be varied at w1 With the above and other objects in view, as will `be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.

In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there has been disclosed a casing 10 of the usual bowl shape and this casing is open at the top, the top being closed by a cap 11 secured to the casin by stud bolts 12. At the top of the cap t ere is provided a pipe connection 13 and a simi-v lar pipe connection 14 is provided at the bottom of the casing so that the casing can be connected to a tank or boiler or other like vessel above and below the Water line, the normal water 4line preferably passing through the casing on the section line 6 6` of Fig. 1. This casing moreover, has on one side connections 15 so that a gage glass 16 may be carried at the side of the casing and thus enable the operator to visually obl serve the height of water within the casing.
Projecting from one side of this casing is a hollow extension 17 provided with an opening 18 on its underside near its outer end, the opening being faced olf at the bot-- tom for purposes hereinafter to be set forth.
Extending through one of the side Walls of the casing is a pivot pin 19 and pivotally mounted on this in is an arm 20 which passes between guides 21 at the end of the extension adjacent the body0f the casing. Disposed substantially centrally of the casing is a float 22 which is connected to the arm 20 and as this float rises and falls the arm is moved upward and downward in accordance with the movement of the float.v
The float and arm are preferably so proportioned that the normal water line will pass through the center of the float when the arm is horizontal.
Covering the opening 18 and seated on the faced oli" portion of the casing is a plate 23 which is arranged to assume either the position shown` in Figs. 1 and 2 or the position shown in Fig. 3. This plate is secured to the casing by means of suitable bolts 24. Formed on the inner side of the plate is a stufling box 25 the outer diameter of which .is considerably less than the inner diameter of the opening 18 so that this stuiiingbox, which is eccentric to the plate 23,`\may be either positioned to the side of theopening close to the end of the extension or to the side of the opening which is remote from the end of the extension. This stuffing-box is provided with the usual packing 26 and gland 27. It is to be noted thatby this means the stufling box which is positioned vertically beneath the arm 21 may be caused to assume either of two positions with respect to the ivot of said arm. Through this stuiiing ox extends a valve stem 28 which is connected to one of two openings 29 formed in the arm 20 by means of a suitable pivot bolt 30, the bolt passing through one of these openings when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2 and through the other of the openings when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3.
The valve comprises a body 31 which has at its lower part the bonnet 32 provided with a pipe connection 33. Moreover, the valve body 31 is provided within the bonnet with a valve seat 34 against which a valve 35 is enga cable, the valve 35 being either all of meta or being an elastic disk such as rubber supported in a shell 36. This shell 36 iscarried by the lower section 37 of the valve stem, this section passing upward through the valve body and through a stuling box 38 provided on the body, the stuiiin box carrying the usual gland 39. This ower section 37 is connected to the upper section 28 of the valve stem by means of screw threads 40, the lower section being hollow to receive the upper section. Moreover, on this upper section 28 there is provided a jam or lock nut 41 by means of which the upper and lower sections of the valve stem may be locked in adjusted position, the lower section being provided with suitable openings 42 for the purpose of inserting a pin and turning one section with respect to the other. As previously described, the plate 23 permits oi" adjustment of the valve stem longitudinally of the arm 21 without in any way varying the position of the arm or float and thus the extent of movement of this stem and consequently of the valve can be varied at will.
It will be noted that a plurality of spaced openings 29 are formed in the arm 2O `for permitting adjustment of the pivot 3() connecting the valve stem to the arm to vary the movement of the valve, see Fig. 3 of the drawing, the valve stem being lengthened or shortened by the simple adjustment of the parts 37 with respect to the upper part 28.
It will be obvious that a4 second pipe connection 43 is provided for the body 31.
This valve body is also provided with a base 44 which is secured to the frame or base 45 of the device by means of bolts 46, a faoing or liner plate 47 being interposed between the parts 43 and 44 when the valve is in one position as shown in Fig. 2 and this plate being omitted when the valve is in the second position shown in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the valve can'either be used as a short stroke or a long stroke valve and that the position at full opening can be regulated at will.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction' of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a water regulator, a casing, a float in said casing, an arm connected to the float and pivoted in the casing, said casin being provided with an openlng verticaly disosed with relation to the arm, a cover plate or said opening provided with .an eccentric stuling box, means to secure said plate on said casing over the opening with the stuffing box in the path of movement of the arm, said means being arranged to secure the plate in either of two positions, a valve stem passing through the stuffing box and shiftable therewith, and a valve connected to and controlled by said stem.
2. In a water regulator, a casing, a oat in said casing, an arm connected to the oat and pivoted 1n the casing, said Casin being provided with an opening verticalIy dis posed with relation to the arm, a cover plate for said opening provided with an eccentric stuiiing box, means to secure said late on said casing over the opening with t e stuifing box in the path of movement of the arm, said means being arranged to secure the plate in either of two positions, a valve stem passing through the stuiling box and sl1iftable therewith, a valve connected to and controlled by said stem, and means to vary the length of said stem.
3. In a water regulator, a {ioat casing having a hollow arm extending therefrom and provided with an opening in its under side, a fi'oat in said casing, an arm connected to the float and pivted in the hollow arm of said Casing for permitting vertical movement of the float, a cover plate adjustably mounted on the hollow arm and having an eccentric stung box extended within the opening in said hollow arm and adapted to be positioned at various points therein, valve mechanism arranged below the hollow arm, and a valve rod for controlling said valve mechanism adjustably connected with the In testimony whereof I alix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
