FEED-WATER REGULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, HARRY WALTER ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fargo, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Feed-Water Regulator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
1\l y invention relates to apparatus for regulating the supply of water to boilers, and has i'or its principal objects the provision of an ol'cctive regulator with which gage devices and high and low water signals may be combined.
It consists in the various features and combinations hereinafter described and more particularly claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, illustrating one embodiment of my invention.
l have here shown a casing A having a main or body portion 10, one end of which is closed by a plate 11 and at its other end tapering outwardly to a head or enlargement 12. This head is provided with a downward extension 13 and an opposite upward extension 14, this latter having an opening which is closed by a plate 15. In the extensions 13 and 14 are water and steam openings 16 and 17, respectively, situated at one side and near the extremities of these portions of the head. Between the vsteam and water openings are shown three openings 18 to receive the usual frage-cocks, and at the outer side of the head opposite the main portion of the casing are openings in which are inserted the connections for a gage-glass 19. In the bottom of the extension 13 is an opening in which is set a blow-oli` cock 19B.
Extending inwardly from the plate 11 is a bracket 20, upon which is fulcrumed a lever 21, one arm of which extends toward the casing-head and has lixed to it a float 23, here illustrated as of spherical form. This float preferably carries upon its under side a plate 24, which projects beyond the adjacent curved wall of the oat and being immersed in the water entering the casing through the opening 16 serves to steady the loat and retain it against jumping or churning under the action of the feed-pump. Above the fulcrum of the lever rises an arm 25, which has pivoted to it a member 26, mounted to slide in a recess in a guide projection 27 from the plate 11 above the bracket. From the end of the member within this recess opens a threaded bore 28, which receives a similarly-threaded stem 29. This stem extends through a bore in the plate 11, in which it fits, into a valve-casing 30, which is conveniently supported upon the outer side of the late. The valve-casing has connected with 1t inlet and outlet pipes 31 and 32, respectively, which lead from a source of water under ressure, as that supplied b a pump and to t e boiler. Between the iniet and outlet of the valve-casing is a partition 32, in which are opposite cylindrical guides 33 33. Through these guides moves a valve-body 34, surrounding the stem 29 and being fixed between a collar 34a,fast thereon, and nuts 34h, threaded upon the stem. In the portions of the valve-body operating in the guides are longitudinal grooves or passages 35, through which, when the body is moved to the rig t the li uid may flow from the supply-p1 e throug the feed-pipe to the boiler. At t e outer side ofthe valve-casing is a stufiing-box 36, through which passes a section 37 of the stem 29, this section havin upon its outer extremity a handle 38. Wgithln the valvecasing it is slotted at 39, and into these slots project pins 40, carried by the adjacent end of the stem 29. This allows the valve to be moved by the float-lever without affecting the stem-section 37. At the same time a sufficient movement of this section will reciprocate the stem 29, and its rotation will also turn said stem.
When the water within the casin A is at its normal level or in proximity to t e o enin for the center gage-cock, the valve wi l be heId by the float-lever with its passavfes closed, thus shutting off communication between the supply-pipe and feed-pi e. When the level of the water falls to su an extent that the admission of a further sup ly is desirable, the lever-arm 25, which as been moved outwardly by the fall of the float-arm, acts, through the member 26 and the connected stem, to so move the valve-body that its passages are open and water is admitted to the boiler. In the plate 15 is an o ening threaded to receive the end of a smal casing 41, rising above the head of the main casing. This carries a signal, which is preferably audible, and is here shown as in the form of a whistle 42. Within the casing 41 operates a valve 43, held to its seat by a spring 44, situated between the valve and nuts 45, threaded into the interior of the casing. These nuts have axial openings 46 to receive and guide the stem 47 of the valve. This stem at the 0pposite side projects into the casing-head, where it contacts with a lever 48, fulcrumed upon the plate 15 and having an arm 49de` pending somewhat below the steam-opening. At one side the lever has an extension 50, upon which is hung a rod 51, supported by nuts 52, threaded upon the rod above the extension, and having its lower extremity situated just above the water-opening. Here the rod is hooked at 53, and between this hooked end and the arm 49 of the lever moves a float 54, conveniently of spherical form and prevented from passing into the main portion of the casing A by the rod 51.
For the normal water-.level or conditions not far removed from this the'float 54 is supported by the liquid in the casing-head out of contact with both the lever-arm 49 and the hook 53. If, however, the level rises or falls to such an extent that it approaches either the steam or Water opening, the float is brought into contact with the lever-arm or the hook. In the former instance it raises the arm by its buoyancy and swings the lever upon its fulcrum to lift the stem 47, thus opening the valve and sounding the whistle. In event of the Water falling, the weight of the oat rests upon the hooked end of the rod, which operating through the lever extension moves the stemupwardly and similarly opens the valve and gives an alarm.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A feed-waterregulator comprisinga casing, a valve associated with the casing, a ioat movable in the casing, an adjustable connection between the valve and float, and means operable from the outside of the casing for operating the valve and adjusting the connection between said valve and float.
2. A feed-water regulator comprising a cas- 'mlg, avalve associated with the casing, a lever crumed in the casing, a Hoat carried by the lever, a sliding member to' which the lever is 6g pivoted, and a rotatable valve-stem threaded into the sliding member.
3. A feedwater regulator comprisingacasing, a valve associated with the casing, a 1ever fulcrumed in the casing, a float carried by the lever, and a valve-stem havin independentl -movable sections, one of w 'ch is adjustablfy connected with the said lever.
4. A feed-water regulator comprising acasing, a valve associated with the casing, a float movable in the casing and being connected with the valve, and a plate secured to the lower face of the float and extending beyond the adjacent surface thereof.
5. A feed-water regulator, comprisin a main casing having an inwardly-extending tubular projection, a lever ulcrumed in the casino' and carrying a float, a member slidable 1n the tubular projection of the casing and with which the ioat-lever is pivotally connected, a valve-casing at one end of the main casing and having an inlet and outlet, and a valve in the valve-casin and having its stem projecting into the tu ular projection of the main casing and secured to the said sliding member.
6. A feed-water regulator, comprising a main casing having an inwardly-extending tubular projection, an elbow-lever fulcrumed in the casing and provided with a float onon'e member, a member sliding in the tubular extension of the casing and to which the other member of the elbow-leveris pivoted, said sliding member having a threaded bore in its.
inner end, a valve-casing at one end of the main casing, a valve in the valve-casing, and a stem having its end threaded and'projecting into the tubular projection of the main casing and screwing into the bore of the sliding member.

In a feed-water regulator, amain casing, a lever fulcrumedfin the casing and carrying a loat, a valve-casing, a valve in the casing, and a valve-stem formed of sections having a sliding connection with each other, one section extending into the main casin and pivotally connected with the ioat ever and the other section extending out throu h the valve-casing and provided with a han e.
8. In a feed-water regulator, a maincasin'g having an inwardly-extending tubular projection, a ,lever fulcrumed in the casing and carrying a float, a valve-casing, a valve-stem formed of sections having a sliding connection with each other, one section extendi out through the valve-casing and provide with a handle, and the other extending into the tubular projection of thev main casing, and a sliding member in the said tubular proj ectionand into which the valve-stem screws.
9. In a feed-water regulator, a main casing, a lever fulcrumed in the casing and carrying a float, a valve-casing, a valve in the valvecasing and having a stein forrn'ed of sections name to this specification in the presence of having a sliding connection with each other, two subscribing witnesses.
