Be it known that I, JOHN KmsoHBAUM a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shade- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the charactersof reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of time application, and represent, in

My invention relates to an improvement I in that class of shade-holders particularly designed to be used in conjunction with incardescent lamp sockets, the ob ect being to produce a simple, reliable and strong shade-holder constructed with particular reference to ease of attachment to, and removal from, such a socket. 7 With these ends in view, my invention consists in a shade-holder having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In carrying out my lnvention as herein shown, I employ a hinged s0cket-gr1p made I of a single piece of wire bent midway of its length to form a pintle 8, and two substantially semi-circular oppositely bowed gripping-arms 9 terminating at their outer ends in outwardly turned finger-pieces 10 the extreine outer ends of which are curled under uponthemselves. This socket-grip is hinged upon the upper face of a circular sheetmetal shade-holder 11 of any approved construction, and herein shown as provided with three thumb screws 12 for the reten tion of the shade the lip of which is insorted into the downwardly depending skirt of the holder in the ordinary manner. For

hinging the socket-grip upon the upper face of the shade-holder, the same is formed with parallel cuts 13 (Fig. 2) and the strip 14 embraced by the said cuts bent to form a semi-circular bearing 15 for the reception of the pintle 8 of the grip. In practice the strap 14 is struck into the position shown by broken lines at 16 in Fig. 3 of the drawings after which one end of the wire grip is introduced. When the pintle 8 of the grip has been brought into registration with the strap, the same is struck downward to form the semi-circular bearing 15 already described. .When the grip is in place, its gripping-arms 9 stand directly above a depending bearing-collar 17 formedin the upper face of. the shade-holder and concentrio therewith. When the said arms are drawn toward each other, the circular or substantially circular opening formed by them substantially corresponds to the diameter of the collar 17 aforesaid. 3

The finger-pieces 10 of the grip, are held in their closed positions, by a pair of oppositely located upstanding retaining-hooks 18 located close to the edge of the upper face of the shade-holder at a point thereon oppo site from the bearing 15 above described, the opposing edges of the said hooks being beveled as at 19 and notched as at 20. As shown in Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, these hooks are struck up from the upper face of the shade-holder.

As shown, and preferably, the wire socketgrip will be inclined from its bearing 15 to its locking notch 20 as shown in Fig. 3, so that it will exert a downward draft upon the upper edge of the bead 21 formed near the lower end of the socket 22 and thus to crowd the lower edge of the said head down upon the upper face of the shade-holder at the point 23, the projecting end 24: of the socket being at thisflti ne held in the concentric collar 19 of the shade-holder.

In the use of my improved shade-holder,
