ATTACHMENT FOR EYEGLASS-MOUNTINGS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, Lnw ARNTZ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and use ful Attachment for Eyeglass-Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for an eye-glass mounting so constructed and arranged as to permit the quick and easy installation or removal of the finger piece lever, which carries a nose clamp or guard.
Still a. further object is to provide in an eyeglass mounting a means for supporting a finger piece lever comprising a post capable or beinglocked'in two positions, in connection with a finger piece lever so const-ructed and arranged as to be locked on said post when the post is in one position and to be readily removed from the post when the post is in another position.
/Vith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 3 shows a top or plan view of the sleeve mounting on theupright post.
In the accompanying drawing -I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate in general the bridge of an eye-glass mounting having at its opposite ends the braces 11, which engage the edges of the lenses and the lens cars 12, which may be of any suitable construction.
Between the curved portions of the bridge 10 and the braces 11 are substantially straight portions 13. In the straight portions 13 are substantially vertical openings 14:, which are screw threaded to receive 'a screw threaded portion 15 of an upright post 16. On the lower end of each post 16 is a small nut or head or otherstop device 17.

tance between the collar 18 and the nut 17 is greater than the thickness of the-portion 13, so that when the post 16 is screwed to the limit of its movement in one direction, the nut 17 will engage the portion 13 for locking the post against movement and when the post is screwed in the other direction with a slot 19 to receive a screw driver.
Each post 16 is provided near its upper end with a laterally extending pin 20.
For eye-glass mountings of the type shown herein I have provided guards provided with special parts or equipment. In Fig. 1 I have shown a guard 21 having the ordinary pad 22. Connected with the guard 21 is the finger piece lever 23. The lever 23 has at one end the ordinary finger piece 24. On the finger piece lever 23 is a drum shaped sleeve 25 designed to be slidably and rotatably received on the post 16 and provided with a central opening or bore 26to receive the post 16. The sleeve 25 is provided with the vertically elongated slot 27 opening into the bore 26 and adapted to permit the passage of the pin 20 in mountingthe sleeve 25 on the post 16. Mounted on each drum shaped sleeve 25 is a spring 28. One end of each spring 28 is suitably bent at 29 to engage the finger piece lever 23 and the other end of the spring 28 is designed to engage one of the brace menibers 11 as illustrated in Fig. 1 so as to give the spring 28 its ordinary function.
It will be noted that the construction of my mount is such that guards of different kinds may be selectively mounted upon the portions 13. In the practical installation of one of said guards the post 16 is moved to one limitof its movement by means of a small screw driver to position to permit a sleeve 25 to be dropped downwardly over the post and to permit the pin 20 to slide freely through the slot 27. When the sleeve 25 rests on the collar 18 and the spring 28 is arranged with one end engaging one of the braces 11 the post 16 is given a quarter turn to cause the pin 20 to be moved to such position that the sleeve 25 cannot be moved" 13 andthe-guard cannotbe moved to posi-' tion to permit its removal on account otthe fact that the guard engages the bridge 10, which limits I its movement in one direction whileithe spring yielding-1y limits the movement of the guard in thevother direction and the members 11 absolutely limit such-movement in the-other direction. It will thusbe seen; that, one of the interesting; features about; my. invention is the fact that the post. 16 ,is locked; with the. pin 20 projecting insuch: direction that: the sleeve. 25 cannot be removed.
The advantages of my improved mounting may be largelyseeni from the foregoingdescriptionh The advantage of my (l9? vice over aimounting having a, guard secured to the member 13 or itsT equivalent by, a=post screwed into themember13. in the ordinary way or, riveted thereto is ob,- vious.- The guards of. my mounting may be very quickly and easily removed and replaced w-ith others therebygreatly reducing the work and 1 time i necessary for properly fitting glasses tothe patient.
Some-changes may, be madeinthe construction and arrangement of the various 'parts'of, my improved mounting, without departing from the, essential features and purposes of my invention audit is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of, structure or mechanical equivalents, which may. be reasonably included Within their scope.

A mounting comprising the con'ibination of a bridgehaving atits ends substantially horizontal extensions, posts mounted in said extensions for limiting rotary movement, said posts and said extensions having means wherebythey may be locked at their diflerent limits of movement, laterally extending pins on said posts, guards each comprising a finger piece lover, a sleeve on said finger piece lever having a central bore for receiving one ofsaid posts, and a slot opening into said bore for permitting the passageof one of said pins, the parts being so arrangedthat at one limit of movement of the post one of said sleeves may be mounted on the post with the pin on said post registeringwith the slot in the sleeve while in another position of said post the sleeve cannotbe moved to such position that the slot therein will register with said last named pin.
