POCKET 'DOOR-LOCK.
that may be used as an extra precaution in locking a door, especially on the'inside, and anr object of my invention, among others, 1s to provide a lock of this class that may be readilyplaced between the edge of a door when'closed and the door jamb, and one in which the locking membersmay be certainly engaged with and disengaged from each other. i
One form of my improved lock is illustrated in the drawings herein in which:
Figure lisa face view of `my improved lock.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the locking bars extended from the case.
Fig. 3 is a view in horizontal sectionl through a portion of a door and a jamb showing my improveod lock in position before the door isjclosed.
Fig. fl is a viewsimilar to Fig. 3,showing the door closed and the lock case and other parts in their locked position.
Fig. 5 is a view in cross section on plane denoted by dotted line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 'is an yendview of my improved lock. 'y In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 indicates a case that is preferably of thin metal of flat, tubular form and thin as compared with its length and width. This case is preferably tapered in form, although this is not essential to my invention. Locking bar actuating grooves 6 are formed in pairs, on` a -member or members lof the structure, in the device shown` herein these grooves being formedinl the case and preferably one groove of each pair being located opposite a groove of the other pair in opposite walls of the case. Themembers of each pair of grooves are angularly arranged with respect to each other, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, this arrangement being for the purpose4 of causing lockingbars, hereinafter described, to be moved into engagement with, and out of engagement from each other, and I, therelSpecication of Letters Patent. Patented lwahyll, 191%.
Application filed June 11, 1917. Serial No. 173,932. p l y i fore, contemplate many different arrange? ments o-f these grooves that will effect the desired purpose, and it` will also be evident that the grooves may extend entirely through the walls of the case. i
Locking bars 7--8 extend `into the case 5 i there are grooves 6, the pins entering the grooves and serving the purpose of separating the bars, or for drawing them together as the case is moved lengthwise along the bars. The meeting edges of the locking bars areformed with inter-engaging teeth 10, so
that as the bars are drawn together, in the manner hereinabove described, they will lock against relative lengthwise movement, and this locking engagement will exist when the bars are within the case to the greatest extent and as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Each bar is provided with a locking dog 11 extending from one face and at or near the end of said bar. The dog on each bar extends across the line of separation between the bars and overlying a face ofthe opposite bar, each dog being cut away as at 12 to receive the edge of the bar opposite to that onv which it is located, and thus permitting the bars to be located in the same plane. This arrangement not only gives a maximum strength to each of thedogs, but each `dog supports a locking bar` against movement from a force that would be caused in an effort toopen a door secured by my improved lock, such forcebeing caused by reason o-f the beveled faces on the dogs that are shaped to conform 'to the beveled end of a latch 14 andthe bottom of a recess in a keeper 15 in the door jamb. rlhese dogs are straight on that side opposite the bevel, that is, this side of each dog is substantially perpendicular to the face of the locking bar on which it is supported. The beveled side of each dog has two sloping surfaces, theone extending from the pointlof each dog and denoted by' and the'steeper beveled face 13 is provided;
for the purpose of enabling the dog to be driven into a door ja-mb andtheedgeof a door, when occasion may require, andin cases where thereare no latch openings or keeper recesses, or where such may not be applicable toireceivelthe dogs. Inorder to increase the driving qualities of, the dogs there are recesses as at 18 to provide cutting yedges 19 that will be an aid: tothe dogs in penetrating Wood, when they are driven. in. As an eXtraJl Iprecaution to prevent unwarranted, unlocking action of the lockingbars, a vhole 20 is formed through thecase. andy a holeI 21 through the locking baia, within whichI holea pin may be inserted to, absof lutely prevent any endwise movementV of the case and bars with respect to eaCh. Other.
Thislstrueture of the blades and-dogsen ables. metolobtainv the great`A strength` that is required in a' structure of this class, and at the same time'to provide blades thin enough part.y
togserv'e the purpose desired, as .the blades andf dOgS may be drop-forgedth usl provid.- ing not'tonly ach'eap construction, but one of extreme strength and durability. j
Injaccordance, with the provisions ofthe patent statutes, I have*V described the principle of, operation ofmyl invention, together with theapparatus ,which I no w consider -to represent theV best embodiment thereof; but I' desire tohave it understood that the apparatus showny is only illustrative, and that the invention canbe carried out'by other means.- j
Ifclaimr t lgj'Adoor vfastener including av case, locking bars prejecting.from onev end of the case andv movable lengthwise therein, yinterengaging locking members on the meeting edges movement. Y e
, v2. A door fastener, including a ease, locking bars projectingl from one end of the case and movable lengthwise therein, said bars having interengaging locking members to prevent endwise movement one independently of theothe'r, and means upon the case andl lockingbars to actuate the latter and including guideways angularly arranged withv respect to each other on one partto receive actuatingpins from the opposite 8. Adoor fastener including a case, lock,- ing-bars projecting from one end of the case f and'movable lengthwise therein, said bars having interengaging locking members on the-meeting edges thereof, and locking pins projecting from the locking bars into angularly arranged grooves in said case to move the bars toward andfrom each other.
4. A door fastener including a fiat, thin case, flat lockingbars projecting from one end of the case and located with their flat faces inthefsame plane, dogs located on the ends of the bars, each dog projecting over and resting against the face of the bar opposite to that on whichit islocated Whcnthe dogs are substantially in lateral alinement, and means for locking the bars against relative lengthwise movement,
5.. A doorv fastener including a flat1 thin case, iiatloclzing bars projecting from one end of the case and movable lengizhwise therein, said` bars being located with their fiat. faces in the same plane, dogs, projecting from opposite faces ofthe. bars, eachl dog beingundercut to overlie, rest against, and receive the end of the bar opposite to the one onI which; it is located whenlthe dogs are substantially in lateral alinemvent,` and means for. locking thebars against relative endwise movement.
6,. A door fastenery including a case, locking bars vprojecting from one end of the case andI movable lengthwise therein, said bars having toothed interengaging meetingedges, dogs projecting-in opposite directions from the face of the bars, each dog being undercut to overflje andI receive the edge of the baropposite to the one on,A which it is lo-` cated, and interengaging means between the bars and case to cause the bars tobemoved toward and from eachy other as they are movedl lengthwise in the case.
7. A door fastener ineluding a4 flatZ case, flat locking bars projecting from theend. of the case and movable lengthwise thereiiniliterenga-ging pins and grooves upon the bars andl case to cause the bars to move toward and from each other by reason of the. endvvise movement of the case alongthe bars, interengaging locking teeth on the meeting edges of the bars, and` dogs projecting from opposite faces ofl the bars, each dog` being undercut to receive and overlie the bar opposite to that on which it is located.
8 A door fastener including a hat thin case, flat locking bars projecting from one end of the case and located with their flat faceslin the same plane, dogs located on the ends of the bars, each dog projecting over and resting against the face of the bar op-V posite to that on which it is located, said bars and dogs thereon being duplicates Bilch of the other, and-means for locking the bars against relativeendwise movement.
