Description

SPACE RETAIN APPLICATG DEVICE FOR CA 10N FILED ,AN 3 RD INDEXES IQB.
Patented May 14 1 of the SAMUEL c+. mienne, or coA'rEsvrLLn; PENNSYLVANIA.
SPACE-RETAINING DEVICE FOR CARD-INDEXES.-
To all 'whom z't may concern.'
. Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. HAGANs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coatesville, inthe county of Chester and State of Penns lvania, havc invented certain new and use Improvements in Space-Retaining Devices for Card-Indexes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters andiigures of, reference marked thereon, `which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and 'useful improvements in space retaining device for card indexes and consists in the provision of a simple and eiiicient means for holding theleaves of card indexes separated when a card is taken out forany purpose.
The invention consists of further details of construction combinations and arran ements of parts which will be hereina ver fully described, and then specifically defined in the accompanying claims.
I illustrate my invention in the-accompanylng drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of thisspecication and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a card tniidex showing theA application of my inven- Fig. 2-is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. t I
e ig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the modified form of the drawer or casing.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one ace retaining members and rod upon wh1cl1 -it is mounted.
Fig. 5 yis a detail view of a blank of metal before being bent to form the shell.
Fig. 6 is a detail pers ective view showing a modied. formo holding the rodsv in the end of the cabinet or casing, and
Fig. 7 is a ldetai-l perspective. showing the manner of holdingthe rods 1n the crosspiece shownv in Fig. 1. d
Reference now being had tothe detailsof the drawings'by letters:
vK indicates an index card cabinet having the rear end thereof open and-L is a crosspiece spanning the lopen end of the cabinet and secured to the opposite sides thereof` by fastening meansN. Said cross-piece, a detail perspective view of aportion of which Bpeciiieation oi Letters Patent.
Patented May id, 31918.
' Application illed January 3, 1918. Serial No. 210,178.
is shown in Fig. 7of the drawings,is' provided with openings Q ada ted to receive the rods S and R, each of w ich is provided with an annular oove adapted to receive the grooved portions Q2 of the latch Q', which 1s pivoted to said crossepiece, thereby affording means for locking the rods in place.
A sheet of,metal D.. as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings is provided with oppositely disposed apertured lugs D and which plate is bent to form a cylindrical shell and mounted t'o have a sliding ymovement lupon the rod R. A pin E passes through registering apertures in saidlugs, and F is a space retaining member whlch 1s pivotally mounted upon said pin E and. has
a herical shaped end I-I.
t will be noted upon reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings that the inner rod S serves as a means for supportlng the space holdin member F in convenient positions when 51e space holder is in use, and also as a stop for ends of cards.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings 1s shown a modiiied form of the cabinet in which the two rods C Cl are mounted in the end walls of the wooden cabinet A, and upon the rod adjacent to the side of the wooden cabmet a shell D ismounted having the ace retaining member F pivoted thereto, whlle the other rod serves as a supporting means, as before described.
- In Fi 6 of the drawings I have shown a mo ed rform of fastening rods 1n the end T of a case A and in which vertical grooves T are formed in the'end wall of the'case to receive the ends of the rods S and R, for the reception of the latch T2 which 1s pivoted to the end 'I and adapted to engage said rods in the manner shown.
In use, it will be noted that when it is Y the ends of the drawers as in the middle, iii/ being noted that the retaining device slides the entire length of the cabinet and when withdrawn from between the cards, the retaining device will. be out of the way. Owing to the shape of the retainers, having spherical ends, the cards will space apart a suitable distance" so that the removed` card may be easily slipped in place.
What I claim'to be new is:
1. A card index space retaining device comprising in combination with a cabinet, a
rod supported therein, a sliding member upon said rod, a space retainer pivoted to said member, and means for'supporti'ng the retainer between the cards.
2. A card index space retaining device comprising in combination with a casing, a rod supported therein, sliding 'members made of pieces of metal bent to form cylindrical shell portions with integral lugs rojecting therefrom, space retaining mem ers pivoted between said lugs, and having their free ends terminating in spherical portions.
3. Acard index space retaining device comprising in combination with a casing, a
' rod supported therein, sliding members pivoted between said lugs, and having their made' of pleces o f metal bent to Iform cylindrlcal shell portions with integral lugs projecting therefrom, space retaining members free ends terminating in'spherical portions, and a second rod for supportin the retaining members when posltioned etween the cards.
4. A card indexv space retaining device comprising a casing one end being open, a cross-piece fastened to the open end and provided with apertures, Y rods passmg vthrough said apertures, means 4for holding the rods in place, .sliding members mounted upon one of said rods, and a retaining device pivoted to said members.
5. A card index pace retaining device comprising a cabinet open at one end, a cross-piece fastened to the side of the cabinet at the'open end, and havingapertures formed therein, rods passing through said apertures and mounted within the casing, said rods /provided with circumferential grooves, a latch pivoted to the cross-piece and having a recessed edge adapted to engage said grooves of the rods.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signatureV in presence of two witnesses.
