- GREASE-CUP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anrrno EQToonnr, a citizen of the United States,, and aresident of Edmore, in the county of Ramsey and State .of North Dakota. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grease-Cups, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention is an improvement in grease cups, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified, wherein a casing is provided, consisting of an inner and an outer section, rotatably connected to turn with respect to each other, the sections having openings adapted to register when they are turned into a predetermined position to facilitate the filling of the cup, and wherein a plunger is provided for expressing the contents of the cup, the plunger being screw operated.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of the improved Fig. 2 is a vertical section;
Figs. 3 and l are sections on the lines and 44, respectively of Figs. 1 and 2, respectively, each view looking in the direction of the arrows adjacent the line.
In the present embodiment of the inven tion, the grease cup comprises a casing consisting of an outer section and an inner section which are rotatably connected. The outer section comprises a body 1 of cylindrical form having at one end a reduced nipple 2, which is externally threaded to engage within the bearing 3 of the element to be lubricated. This reduced portion of the body has a polygonal surface 4 for engagement by a wrench or the like to turn the cup into place.
The inner section comprises a cylindrical body 5 fitting within the body 1 of the outer section, and the upper or outer end of the said section 5 is closed, as indicated at 6, the lower end being open. This section 6 has a marginal outwardly extending flange 'T at its closed end, and the said flange has an underlying portion 8. 7
The body 1 of the outer section has a marginal outwardly extending flange 9 at its upper open end, which is adapted to engage above the underlying portion 8 of the flange '7 and beneath the flange.
Each cup section has an opening lO'and 11, respectively, said openings being rectangular in the present instance, and being Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 14, 1918- .1 Application filed February 20, 1918. Serial No. 218,283. I 1 7 adapted to register whenthe sections-are in a certain predeterminedposition with re-' spect to. each other. It will be obvious that when the openings are in register, the interior of the grease cup is accessible for the purpose of filling the same.
A plunger is mounted to move vertically in the cup to express the contents thereof through the nipple 2 to the surface to be lubricated, the said plunger comprising a washer 12 having a hub portion 13, through which is threaded a rod'14l rotatably connected with the closed end 6 of the outer section. This rod has a knurled wheel or head 15 outside of the casing for convenience in turning the same, and it will be evident that when the rod is turned the plunger will be moved vertically in the cup, the direction of movement depending upon the direction of the turning of the rod. The exterior of the hub 13 is threaded for en 'agement by a washer 16, and a packing 1 of leather or the like is arranged between the washers 12 and 16, the edge of the washer, as shown, extending down over the peripheral surface of the washer 16. The connection between the flange T and its underlying portion 8 is knurled or corrugated, as shown in Fig. 1, to
provide a roughened surface for convenience in turning the inner section with respect to the outer section.
In use, the section 1 is turned to bring the opening 11 thereof into register with the opening 10 of the outer section, as shown in Fig. 1. The plunger 12 is now moved upwardly in the cup by turning the rod 1 1 in the proper direction, as shown in Fig. 1, after which the grease may be inserted beneath the washer through the opening 10 11. Afterward, the inner section is turned with respect to the outer section to bring the opening 11 out of register with the opening 10, and the cup is ready for use. The flange connection 7-8-9 provides a rotatable connection between the sections.
I claim:
1. A grease cup comprising inner and outer sections of cylindrical form, the outer section having its outer end open and having a marginal outwardly extending flange at its open end the inner section having its outer end closed and having at the said end an outwardly extending marginal flange provided with an underlying portion engaging be neath the flange of the outer section to rota tably connect the sections, said sections having side openings adapted to register when the sections, are brought into apredetermined position with respect to each other to permit the cup to be filled, and means Within the cup for expressing the chntents'thereof, said means comprising a plunger, erod at the axis of the cup and rotatably connected With the closed end of the inner section and having threaded engagement with the plunger.
2. A rease cup comprising inner and outer sections of cylindrical form, the outer section having its outer end open and having a marginal outwardly extending flange at e1 patent he obi-amen telfive cents each, by addressing the Gommiseienei' of Patents,
Washington 4E.
