JOHN R. LONG, OF AKRON, OHIO.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1918.
Application filed May 21, 1917. Serial No. 170,006.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county ofSummit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe wrenches, and has for its object to provide a quickly adjustable wrench.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view of the wrench set to receive a relatively small pipe;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the sliding jaw in position to be set to the diameter of said pipe.
In the drawings 1 indicates the handle of the wrench, having a shank 3 provided with fixed aw at, a plurality of deep cut teeth 5 on its inner edge back of said jaw and a scale 7 on the side thereof indicating in figures the approximate size of pipe each of said teeth will accommodate, as one inch and fractions thereof.
Slidably mounted on the shank 3 is a yoke 16 having a straight outer portion corresponding to the straight outer edge of shank 3 and provided with opposite projections or ears 17 between which the movable or outer jaw 9 is engaged on a pivot 13. The said jaw 9 has a projection 11 behind said pivot provided with a straight inner edge 12 at an obtuse angle to the shank of said jaw and provided with a single tooth 22 at the inner end of said straight edge substantially opposite said pivot 13, adapted, when jaw is tilted inwardly, to engage in any one of the said teeth 5 and to pass free of the teeth for adjustment. Otherwise, or to shift said jaw the jaw is tilted back on its pivot till the tooth 22 is disengaged and this brings the straight edge 12 to the edge of the shank 3 as a stop but frees the parts to slide on the shank 3. A set screw 19 is engaged through the side of the yoke with its inner end adapted normally to project into the longitudinal groove 20 in the side of shank 3, whereby movement of the yoke 16 on the shank is limited. However, by removing the said screw the yoke with jaw 10 may be bodily removed from the handle.
It will thus be seen that the wrench consists of only three parts which require no special hand work in their production and that a very simple and comparatively cheap wrench is produced. The adjustments likewise are quick and easy, and the scale on the side of the handle shank enables one to see at a glance in which tooth to make engagement for a given size of pipe.
The screw 19 in groove 20 also helps to hold the yoke in outward projected relations from the handle to give the jaw 10 freedom on its pivot to engage and disengage the tooth thereon. That is the said yoke at its side projections 17 and 18 must stand out from the arm relatively about as shown to enable the jaw and its tooth to operate as described and the screw 19 contributes to the support of said side projections in extended position when the jaw is disengaged.
hat I claim is:
1. A pipe wrench having a handle provided with a j awacross the end thereof and a series of saw teeth on its inner edge next behind said jaw, a single yoke slidably engaged over said handle and an outer jaw having a shank at right angles to the face of the jaw thereon and pivoted in said yoke, and said shank provided with an extension behind said pivot provided with an inner straight inclined edge and a single tooth at the inner end of said edge adapted to engage in said series of teeth and means in said yoke in engagement with said handle adapted to limit the movement of the yoke thereon.
2. A pipe wrench as described having a handle with a fixed aw across the end thereof and a series of teeth in the edge of said handle next behind said jaw, a yoke engaged over said handle having ears projected outward beyond the edge thereof and an outer jaw pivoted between said ears and having a straight inclined inner edge provided with a tooth opposite said pivot adapted to engage in said series of teeth and to swing clear of the same for adjustment of the said outer jaw back and forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN R. LONG.
