Be it known that I, FELIX LORIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stopper Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. I

This invention is embodied in a flexible ligature including an intermediate portion having two members adapted to bear on opposite sides of abottle neck, end portions adapted to be detachably connected to form a stopper downhold extending across the top upper end of a stopper inserted in the neck, and connecting members which maintain the members of the intermediate portion in the form of a band encircling and closely embracing the bottle neck when the end portions are connected.

I will first describe the preferred embodiment of the invention shown by Fig. 1. In this embodiment of the invention the ligature is composed of two pieces ofstring or cord, each being designated by the reference numeral 12. The end portions of the pieces 12 are preferably tied together, or otherwise connected at 13, and their central portions are adapted to be curved or deflected outwardly in opposite directions, and form members 14 of an intermediate portion of the ligature, said members 14 being adapted to bear on opposite sides of a flanged bottle neck 15 below the flange 16 thereof.

17 and 18 represent connecting members coiiperating with the end and intermediate portions of the ligature to maintain the members 14 of the intermediate portion in the form of a band encircling the bottle neck when the end portions of the ligature are tied together, as indicated by Fig. 6, said connecting members being adjustable relatively to each other to vary the size or diameter of said band. e

The connecting members 17 and 18 may be of, any suitable construction. As here shown, each of said members is a metal band or ring, through which the cords 12 are passed, the member 17 being immovably connected with the portions of the cords passing through it, as indicated by Fig. 2, which represents the member 17 compressed upon the cords. The member 18 is loose and slidable upon the cords, as indicated by Fig. 3. The immovable engagement of the member 17 with the cords is preferred for convenience in applying the fastener to a bottle neck, the member 18 being first moved away from the member 17 to enlarge the loop formed by the intermediate members 14 and permit said loop to pass freely over the bottle neck flange, after which the member 18 is moved toward the member 17 to contract the loop and cause it to closely embrace the bottle neck. This having been done, the end portions of the ligature are tied together above the bottle neck to form a stopper downhold bearing on the upper end of an ordinary stopper 20, as shown by Fig. 6.

Whileit is essential that the connecting members be adjustable relatively to each other to vary the size of the band formed by the members 14, it is obvious that each of the connecting members -may be slida-ble upon the ligature, if desired. The end connections 13 are preferably of sufficient bulk to prevent the connecting members from sliding off from the ends of the ligature.

It will now be seen that the fastener is applied to a bottle neck and a stopper by first enlarging the band formed by the intermediate members 14, passing the band over the flange of the bottle neck, relatively adjusting the connecting members to contract the band and cause it to closely embrace the bottle neck, and then tying together the end portions of the ligature.

Fig. 4 illustrates a modification, in which the ligature is composed of tvvo lengtl s 21 of cord or string. fhe members or the intermediate portion of the ligature are formed by the inner end portions of said u cords, and the connecting members are formed by rings or eyes each attached to one of the cords and receiving a portion of the other cord.

Fig. 5 illustrates another modification, in which the ligature is composed of a relatively long piece of cord or string 2%, and a shorter piece The band-forming members 26 of the intermediate portion 01- the ligature formed by portions of the cord 2%. The connecting members are rings or eyes 27, one attached to the cord and the other to tl e cord 25.

Each of these modified fasteners is adapt ed to operate in the same manner the tastener shown by Fig. l, and each is preferably provided with enlargements :28 at its end portions to prevent the said end portions from passing through the connecting memhers.

I claim:

A stopper fastener comprising an elongated flexible ligature having end portions adapted to be detachably connected and form a stopper dovvnhold, an intermediate portion including two opposed members adapted to bear on opposite sides of a. bottle neck, and connecting memoers cooperating" with said. end and intermediate portions to maintain the members of the intermediate portion in the form 01" a band encircling the bottle neck when the end portions are connected, said connecting members being adjustable relatively to each other to vary the size of said band.
