ltfi, Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed etocer l, 191i.
To all I07mm t may concern.'
lie it lrnovvn that l, RICHARD lV. EDMONDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at ittlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain neuv and useful lmproveinents in lSpouts, of Which the following is a specilication.
My invention consists ina new and useful improvement in spouts adapted to be applied to cans intended' to contain liquids. The novel construction of in f spout permits it to be folded completely Within the lines of the can When not in use and extended outside the lines of the can when it is desired to use the spout. Thus l provide a spout which may be arranged so that it Will notl interfere with the packing of the cans for transit. My improved spout is adapted to be attached by means of solder or rivets to any type or" can with which its use may be desired. It is intended that the spout shall be made of flexible metal or similar' material and it is to be stamped or ressed out in the formV in which it is used for pouring liquid, its flexibility allowing bending into the shape intended for it when the can is to be packed. The forni of the spout is such that t-he simple process of bendingl the outer end of the spout, from the closed position When packed, to the position for use, automatically forms a throat through Which the liquid may be poured from the can, Without soiling the can. I have provided an improved tip upon my spout Which is designed to prevent any surplus liquid from running dovvn the outer surface of the spout after the poincing, operation. M v invention is clearly set forth in the details of construction hereinafter pointed out.
In the drawings:
Figure l is ay perspective view of the device in folded position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device in extended position.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional vievv of the device.
In the drawings:
The numeral l designates a can to which my improved spout i). is to be applied by soldering, or riveting. The spout Q is formed with a ycireumferent-ial Wall 3 and a base 4 provided with a slotted portion Projecting from the upper rear edge of the Wall is flange 6 provided with a depending Wall 'i' having' a flange S adapted to rest upon the can l. Extending from both sides Patented inlay ist, lgjl.
Serial No. 194,162.
of the forward end of the Wall 3 the lateral ears 9, 9, forming the throat l0 which terminates in a pointed tip 1l. il spring cover l2 attached to the base by rivet 13, is provided to cover the slotted portion 5. This spring cover l2 is provided with an upwardly extendingl projection 12, by vwhich the cover may be removed from the slotted portion 5. A small sticlr such as a match or tooth pick may be inserted under the cover 12, resting upon the ears to hold the cover open. When it is desired to use the spout, a knife cut ll may be made in the cover of the can immediately belen7 the slotted portion 5.
llVhen my improved spout is applied to a can, the throat l0 may be bent upon the line l0 so as to compress the ears 9 in a planeparallel with the top of the can l and flatten the throat l0 above the for fard portion of the Wall 3, thus bringingthe throat l0 Within the lines of the can l.k Wien the throat l0 is bent back so as to project the tip ll beyoud the Wall of the can l, the throat l0 will assume a trough shape, the ears 9 being drawn upwardly to forni the sides of the trough. The tip ll, being, fli- `e. ma;v be bent doinyvardly to guide the liquid and prevent any accumulated liquid from running down the outside. of the throat, after the pouring' has been completed.
Having described my invention, what l claim is:
l. The comlrination.,l in a spout, of a basin provided With an orifice in its bottom; a flexible throat extending` upwardly from one side of the basin; and a flexible tip provided upon the outer extremity of said throat.
2. The combination, in a spout, of a basi provided With an oriice in its bottom; means for opening` and closing said orice; a tlexr ble throat extendingupwardly from one side of the basin; and a exible tip provided upon the outer extremity of said throat.
3. The combination, in a spout, of a basin provided With an orifice in its bottom; resilient means attached to the inner surface of said basin to close said orifice; manually operable means to ope-n said orifice; a flex# le throat extending upwardly from one side of the basin; and a flexible tip provided upon the outer extremity of iid throat.
fl. The combination, in a spout, of a basin provided With an orifice in its bottoni; a spring cover attached to the inner surface :md dapied in be n.
