1 Claim. (Cl. 222-417) The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a dispensing container for pow- :dered materials.
- An object of the invention is to provide a dispensing containerfor powdered materials wherein the dispensing openin or openings formed .inthe closure member of the container are closed by a rigid sliding unitshaped so as to make firm contact with the innerface of the closure member.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide .a dispensing container of the above type wherein wherein the breast at one side of the center is formed with a slot extending lengthwise thereof and at the opposite side of the center is formed with a dispensing opening or Openings and where- "in an operating finger memberis disposed on the outside of the breast and connected through the slot witha rigid control slide holding it in firm engagement with the inner face of the breast.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a dispensing container of the above type wherein the control slide is moved to closed position by means of a bowed spring member, one end of which is rigidly attached to the inner end of the finger member and the other end is detachably connected with a depending skirt on the closure member.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the drawings, which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a container embodying the improvements with the control slide in closed position;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, but showing the control slide moved so as to uncover the openings for dispensing; v
Figure 3 is a plan view on a smaller scale of the container with parts broken away to show the manner of supporting the abutment end of the operating spring;
Figure 4 is a view showing the control slide and spring in assembled position ready to receive the operating finger which when headed will hold the control slide in firm contact with the breast or the container;
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5--5 '01 Figure 1; and
Figure 6 is a view showing the breast as provided with sifting openings instead of a 'p'ouring opening as shown in Figure 3.
The improved dispensing container comprises a body portion I, preferably made of metal. Said body portion is beaded a short distance from the upper end thereof, as indicated at 2. A closure member 3, also preferably of metal, is provided with a depending skirt 4 which makes firm frictional engagement with the outer face of the body wall above thebead 2. The container body and closure member are preferably rectangular in cross section with rounded corners, as shown in Figure 3.
The top portion of the closure member is shaped so as to provide a breast 5 which conforms to a segment of a cylinder. The breast is closed at the sides thereof by members 6, 6 which are formed integral with the breast and the closure top. The breast is provided with a slot extending longitudinally thereof as indicated at 1.
In one form of the invention, the breast is provided with a rectangular pouring opening 8. The opening is disposed at one side of the transverse center line of the breast and the Slot is disposed substantially at the other side of said center line. Instead of a rectangular opening for pouring, spaced openings 9, 9 for sifting, such as shown in Figure 6, may be used. The openings in the breast are controlled by a slide ID. This slide it includes a curved portion the outer face of which is curved on the same radius as the inner face of the breast. The slide is also provided with side members II, II which are made integral with the control slide so as to form therewith a rigid closure unit. The side members II, II of the slide lie close to the side member 6, 6 of the breast so that no powder is likely to pass between the side members H, H and the'side members 6, 6.
A bowed spring l2 has the inner end thereof bent at I3 so that it will contact with the inner face of the slide unit. There is an opening through the spring and an operating finger member I4 is provided with a shank [5 which extends through the slot and through the opening in the spring. The inner end of the shank is riveted or otherwise provided with a head I6 which firmly attaches the spring to the slide unit and the slide unit to the breast so that the outer face of the slide unit will contact with the inner face of the breast. The other end of the bowed spring is anchored on the closure mem 3 and thus the bowed spring forms a unit with the closure member. The spring normally moves the control slide so as to close the opening or openings through which the powder is to be dispensed.
It is noted that the closure unit is a rigid unit The outer end of this bowed spring is snapped between the lugs and the closure top comprising a body portion, a closure therefor having a raised breast shaped to conform to a segment of a cylinder with the sides thereof closed and parallel, said breast having a slot extending lengthwise thereof at one side of the longitudinal center and a dispensing opening at the other side thereof, a control slide disposed within the breast including a control member curved on its outer face on the same radius as the radius of the inner face of the breast, side members extending from one end of the control so that the curved member thereof will not spring away from the inner face of the breast. outer face of this closure unit is die shaped so as to conform closely to the curvature of the inner face of the breast, these two surfaces bein formed on the same radius. Furthermore, the
slide unit is held by the operating fin-gerpiece in firm contact with the breast'so that the end of the curved portion I!) of the control slide move in contact with the inner surface of the breast and will out off the flow of powder through the openings when the fingerpieee is released.
When the slide unit is moved to open position, as shown in Figure vt, it will remain closely in contact with the breast at the end 20 thereof. There is no chance, therefore, for powder to work between the outer surface of the slide unit and the inner face of the breast. Therefore the cutoff is clean and leaves no powder to accumulate between the slide and the breast which can work out through the closed openings. other words, when'the slide unit moves to closed position, the shearing effect will be so effective that all of the powder will drop back into the con- The slide to the other and formed integral therewith so as to provide a rigid control unit, said side members of the control slide being disposed close to the sidemembers of the breast so as to prevent the powder being dispensed from working in between the control slide and the breast, an operating finger member having a head disposed on the outer side of the breast and overlapping the edges of the slot in the breast and a shank extending through the slot and connected to the slide for holding the slide in intimate sliding engagement with the inner surface of the m, and a bowed leaf spring disposed within the con- Lain-er and having its inner end secured to the shank of the operating finger member, the skirt of the closure member having an inwardly projecting lug at its upper end and the outer end of said bowed leaf spring being adapted to snap between the top of the closure and the lug on the depending skirt whereby said bowed leaf spring is supported as a unit with the closure.
