To all whom t may concern:
Be 1t known that I, RICHARD W. BUnNnT'r, a citizen of the United States of America,
`residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Roofs,
' of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. y
The invention relates to car-roofs of that type in which the roofing sheets are weatherproofed by the carlines and are supported to lie beneath the same, the subject matter being related to that of my co-pending application, Serial Number 177,690. The present invention has particular reference to the means employed for supporting the sheets, permitting of readily engaging and disengaging the same.

To support the sheets each of the flanges D is provided with a ylaterally-extending portion E, preferably slightly returnbent,
,as indicated at F. G are clips secured at intervals to the carline within the channel thereof and having downwardly and laterally-extending portions H and I for engaging the laterally-extending portions E of the sheets and constituting a shelf or support therefor. The clips G may be secured in various ways within the carline, such as shown in the several figures of the drawings, Fig. l illustrating a depending hanger-bolt J passing through anaperture in the plate and supporting the same by a key II and spacer-sleeve L. Fig. 2 diers from Fig. l in that the hanger-bolt J of the former is welded or otherwise secured to the top of the carline, whereas in Fig. 2 the bolt J is headed and is supported on a shelf or bracket M extending across between the sides of the carline. In Fig. 3 the bolt ksupported and weather-proofed.
J2 passes through an aperture in the top of the carline and has a recessed head N for engaging an annular flange O about the bolt aperture to form a weather-proof oint. llfith all of the constructions thus far described the sheets may be engaged with their Asupports by removing the sleeve L and supporting key therefor, engaging the clips G with the laterally-extending portions E and sleeving said clips upon the bolts and raising the same to proper position. The sleeves L may then be placed in position and locked bythe key II and when secured will perform the double function of supporting the clips and spacing' the flanges I).
In the modified construction shown in Fig. -i the clip G is spot-welded or otherwise directly secured to the inner top face of the channel carline A, and the flanges D of the sheets are moved upward in the space between the shelf flanges I of the clip and then are moved laterally into engagement with said ianges. Disengagement is prevented by bending downward between the flanges D a lug Q of the clip, which will act as a spacer.
My improved construction is particularly adapted for permitting flexure of the roof to compensate for distortions in the roof frame. Thus each of the sheets is free to move relative to the frame and to the other sheets and at the same time it is securely The laterally-extending portions F of the upstanding flanges are preferably returnbent as shown, which in addition to increasing the security of the engagement with the clips will form a guard for obstructing the driving of rain over the flanges and into the car.
In the modilied construction shown in 5 in place of a single clip I have arranged laterally-extending shelf flanges I which are secured to the carline by suitable means such as the ange I2 welded or otherwise secured thereto. The roofing sheets are of the same construction shown in the other figures and engage the shelf flanges I in the same manner as the portions I.
