Description

D. MURPHY.
SEAM COVER FASTENXNG FOR CAR ROOF- APPLICATWN NLE@ JULY 21. 19m,

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DWIGHT MURPHY. OF PITTSBURGH. PENNSYLVANIA. ASSIGNOR TO P. H. MURPHY COMPANY, OF PARNASSUS, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
SEAN-COVER FASTENING FOR CAR-ROOFS.
Application filed July 21, 1915.
To all whom it vmay concern Be it known that I, Dwlolrr Munrnv, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Seam-Cover Fastenings for Car-Roofs. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to outside metal roofs of the type wherein the roof sheets extend crosswise of the Car and are connected along their sidemargins by raised' seams formed by strips of metal which cover the spaces between adjacent roof sheets and whose edges overlap the side margins of the roof sheets.
The object of the invention is to secure the strips of metal which cover the seams between the roof sheets without puncturing the roof and without the use of eavesclips or other securing means on the outside of the roof.
The invention consists in a sheet metal clip which is adapted to be secured to the car under a seam cover, and over which the seam cover can be slipped endwise to embrace it and be held in position thereby.
Further objects and details of the 'invention appear in the following description of the preferred form of the invention; and what the invention consists in is more particularly delined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, wherein the same reference characters designate like parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a planview of a portion of a car roof at the eaves, showing the end of a seam cover partly broken away toA disclose the clip; Figs. 9. and 3 are crosssections of the same on the lines 2N2 and 3 3, respectively; and F ig. 4 is a perspective view of a Securing clip.
The car roof shown in the drawings is applied to a car having wood roof sheathing boards 11, which are supported on the carlines, and which in turn support the roof sheets 12. The roof sheets are arranged side by side with wooden battens 13 between their adjacent edges. The edges of the roof sheets are provided with lip-standing flanges 14, which are spaced a little away from the battens to permit slight sidewise movement of the roof sheets. The top edges l of the flanges 14 are turned in and slope down toward the body portion of the respective roof sheets, and these sloping edges 15 termi Specification of Letters Patent.

nate above said body portion at about half the height ot' the ilanges 14. The ends 16 of the roof sheets may be turned under and hooked into the rebent flanges 17 of the eaves flashing strips 18, which are secured along the ea ves of the car from end to end.
The seam covers 19 are inverted channelshape, and are arranged over the battens and root` sheet flanges with their side walls 20 turned in along their bottom edges and up at their extremities, forming little troughs, the in'ner edges 21 of which are hooked under the edges 15 of the roof sheets. The side walls 20 and inner vedges 21 of the troughs are spaced from the roof sheet flanges so as to permit limited sidewise movement of the roof sheets. The ends 2:? of the seam covers are turned down over the ends of the battens.
The seam covers are held in position on the battens by means of sheet metal clips '23, which are nailed to the battons underneath the seam covers. The clip Q3 has a central groove for the hatten, which is formed by pressing down wing portions .21 from the sheet metal on each side of the batten into parallel planes. `Thel side edges 25 of the clip are bent down to conform to the slope of the side walls 20 of the seam covers, and in assembled position they fit snugly within the seam covers and hold them in cent-ral alinement with`the battens.
The seam covers can be slipped eudwise on and off of the retaining clips 23. The ridge ends of the seam covers may be retained in position by the corner caps with which outside metal roofs are usually held in place. The clips 23 bear loosely upon the tops of the flanges 14 and prevent the roof sheets from rising oflI the roof boards, while permitting them to move freely within the limits imposed by the battons 13 and the pivot bosses or other securing means usually provided at the ridge ends of the root sheets.
The invention is not restricted to the forms and arrangen'ient of parts as shown and described.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure. b v Letters Patent is:
1. A car roof comprising roof sheets movably secured upon the roof substructure, the edges of said roof sheets being spaced apart, battens between the edges of adjacent roof sheets. seam covers supported on and covering said battens and overlapping the inargills of the adjaeent roof sheets. the lower edges of the side walls of said seam envers beiner spaeed above the roof sheets. and elips seenred tn .said 'nattens beneath said seam e-'n'ers and projeeting.r mit frein said battens over said roof sheets. the extremities nt' said elips en;fa, in{ r th(` inner sides nt' the side walls (if .said seam envers tu retain them in eentrallr alined pnsitiun with respeet to said battens. i
