Description

W. S. MARE.
CIGAR AND CIGARETTE LIGHTER.
APPLICATION FlLED AUG.I3. 1917.
1,265,695. Patented May 7,1918.
MAS/War?" TINITED STATE PATENT @FETCE CIGAR AND CIGARETTE LIGHTER.
Application filed August 13, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WrNrmLo S. MARR, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Enid, in the county of Garfield and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar and Gigarette Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cigar and cigarette lighting devices and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a novel device for holding and striking matches, whereby to facilitate the ignition of a cigar or cigarette.
Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide a device which will shield the flame of the match from wind, rain or the like, thereby insuring the ignition of the cigar or cigarette.
Other aims and objects of the invention may be recited, the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production small, and efficiency and operation high.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved igniting device;
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section therethrough.
Having more particular reference to the drawings and in connection with which like reference characters will refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the annular casing of the igniting device having a plurality of holes 2 and 3 formed in the periphery thereof in spaced relation. A sleeve 4 is arranged adjacent the opening 3 upon the inner peripheral surface of the casing 1 and is extended toward the center thereof for a purpose which will be subsequently apparent. A pin 5 is arranged below and in spaced relation from the lower end of the sleeve 4 and serves as a rest for the head of a match 6 which may Specification of Letters Eatent.

be inserted through the opening and the said sleeve 4.
Upon the inner peripheral surface of the casing, there is fixedly mounted a segmental gear 7 through which a pivot pin 8 is passed. Arms 9 and 10 are loosely mounted upon the opposite extremities of the pivot pin 8 and have journaled in their upper or free ends a shaft carrying an emery or other abrasive wheel 11 and a pinion 12, it being noted, that the said pinion is arranged to rotate with the emery wheel 11. The upper end of the arm 9 is provided with a laterally bent portion 13, said portion extending through an arcuate slot 14 formed in one side wall of the casing 1 and arrying a finger ring 15 upon its outer end for an obvious purpose. Due to the mounting of the emery wheel upon the arms 9 and 10, the same when moved will engage the head of the match 6 arranged through the opening 3 and the sleeve 4, and since the same is rotated by reason of the engagement of the pinion 12 with the segmental gear 7, ignition of the head thereof will be insured.
To cause the automatic return of the emery wheel 11 and the pinion 12 to their normal positions upon the segmental gear 7, the end of a coiled spring 16 has bearing on the arm 9 and the adjacent portion of the inner peripheral surface of the casing 1, the coiled portion, of course being arranged about the pivot in 8.
The opening 2 is of sufficient size to receive either cigars or cigarettes whereby the ends thereof may be arranged adjacent the match 6 in order that they will be ignited upon the striking of the same.
manifestly the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claims, I consider Within the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. A device of the character described, including a casing having openings formed therein in spaced relation, a lever pivotally mounted in the casing and having the free end extending beyond the same, a segmental gear arranged adjacent the pivotal mounting of said lever, an abrasive means carried adjacent the free end of the lever. a pinion mounted adjacent said abrasive means engageable with the segmental gear to cause rotation of the abrasive means at times.
2. A device of the character described, in-
surface thereof, :1 segmental gear arranged in the casing and secured to the inner pe i'ighei'nl surface t-hei'eot a geei'ineehn:
and movable over said segmental gear, an
nhraeive means carried by Said gear and means connected with the gear and extending through a slot termed in the casing for nei'niittingmovement of the gear and fib'iflsive means. v
A device of the (llfil'alCtGl' described, including an annular easing having openinge varying in size formed in the peripheral enrt'eee thereof, a sleeve arranged adjacent one of said openings stop pin el'illfillfllllg l3l'fl11$ versely ot the casing and arranged below said sleeve, a segmental gear secured to the inn-e1 peripheral snifaee of the casing, arms nivotally mounted adjacent the casing, an ehi-esii'e means carried upon the outer ends of said arms, a pinion mounted adjacent the abrasive means and adapted to rotate therewith, one of said arms being provided With a laterally bent portion extending through an ereuete slot formed in one side ofthe casing, and spring means engaged with said arms for returning the same to normal position.
in testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto. I
