Be it known that I, LDWIG SCHN, a'citizen of the Empire of Austria-Hungary, re-
siding at Vienna, in the Empire of Austria- Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-I iters, of which the following is a speciicatlon, reference being had therein to the laccompanying Y drawin This invention relates to a pocket llgnlter of that 'class which combines with a wick saturated with a combustible liquid ani niting mechanism, one of the objects of this invention being to eliminate phosphorus or other flame producing chemical agents and the cumbersome mechanism required for combusting such a ents.
Another object o this invention is to pro-` vide in a pocketigniter, a simple mechanism for producing a spark by frictional abrasion, thereby avoiding the dangers incident to that class of substances Which` produce Haine either by friction or detonation.
With these and other objects in View, this invention consists of the features, details of construction and combinationy of parts de- 4 scribed *in connection with the accompanying drawing and then more pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1, is a sectional particularly side elevation of an ignlterjembodying the invention. Fig. 2, is a sectional' elevation on lines A-B Fig. 1. Fi 3,'is a transverse section on lines C-DFigpl, and Fig. 4, is a side elevation of the ign1ter.

also mounted on said pin lz., and is connected with the cover b, by a link p. The said toothed wheel m, its ratchet wheel n, and the pawl-lever d, are loosely mounted on y said pivot pink. When the cover b, is forced open under the tension of the spring f, the
pawl c, on the p'awl Alever d, engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel n, and rotates the same together with the toothed wheel m, in
the direction of the arrow Z. When, however, the cover is closed, the pawl c, glides over the teeth of the ratchet wheel n, without causing it or the toothed Wheel m to rotate, said latter wheel being held against rotation by the pyrophorous alloy, as will appear more fully hereinafter.

When it is desired to remove the hydrocarbon lamp fv, from the casing a, the nut w is unscrewed and the lamp may then be eX tracted from the casing.
The piece n, of pyrophorous alloy may readily be replaced after the lamp has been withdrawn. To this end it is only necessary, as is obvious, to press the lever k, downwardly thereby to remove the end thereofl from the socket g, whereupon a fresh piece of alloy may be inserted.

2. In a pocket igniter, the combination with a casing of a toothed wheel mounted therein, means for rotating the wheel, a guiding socket secured to the sides of the casing below the wheel, a piece of pyrophorous al oy inserted into this socket, a two-armed lever pivoted within the casing and having the end of one arm placed vbelow the piece a coiled spring connected with the other arm of the lever, a screw bolt connected with the said sprin and having its free end ahole in the bottom of the casing, and adraw nut screwed upon the said free end of the bolt, substantially as and for the purpose described.

An ignlter comprisin a casing having a spring-actuated cover ingedly secured thereto, a liquid hydrocarbon receptacle f1tting in said casing, means to lock said receptacle in said casing, a-wick extending from said receptacle, a toothed wheel loosely journaled in said casin and provided with a ratchet wheel,l a spar producing alloy in roximity to said wick, liold said alloy in contact with said toothed wheel, means controllable by the movement means to normally of said cover in one direction to rotate said toothed wheel and produce a spark in the direction 'of and ignite said wick, said alloy serving to hold said toothed wheel inactive during the movement of said cover in the y opposlte direction.
5. A' device of the character described comprising a casing having a spring-actuated cover hingedly secured thereto, a receptacle-itting in said casing, means to hold said receptacle in said casing, a wick extending from said receptacle, a socket in said casing, a spark producing alloy .in said socket, a toothed wheel journaled in said casing, a ratchet wheel rigidly secured to said toothed wheel, a lever provided with a pawl to engage said ratchet wheel when moved in one direction, a link connected with said lever and hinged vcover and controllable by said cover to rotate said toothed wheel and roduce a spark in the direction of and ignite said wick, and means to holdsaid alloy in contact withfsaid toothed wheel.
6. An igniter comprising a casing having a spring actuated cover, a rotatable element journaled in said casing, a spark producing alloy in contact with said element, means to regulate the frictional contact .of said alloy with said element, a wick, a pawl lever in operative vrelation to said element to rotate the same in one direction and produce a wick i iting spark, and a link connected with saigrpawl-lever and said cover and controllable by lever.
, 7. An igniter comprising a casing having said cover to actuate said pawla spring-actuated cover -hingedly secured.

A11 ignitercomprising a bottomless cas-` ing having a Spring-actuated cover hingedly' secured thereto, a receptacle fitting,r in said casing and having a Wick extending therefrom, a socket in said casing, a spark-plo# ducng alloy in said socket, a toothed Wheel loosely journaled in said easing and provided with a ratchet wheel. a mechanism connected with said cover and in operative relation to said ratchet wheel and controllable by the movement of said cover in one direction to rotate said toothed wheel and produce a spark in the direction of said Wick, and regulable means to constantly insure contact of said alloy with said toothed Wheel. t
