Description

M. K. MORRIS.
Improvementjn Dish-Washers.
No. 126,566, Patented May 7,1872.
I QM 41% inafter shown.
PATENT FFIoE.
MATTHIAS K. MORRIS, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DISH-WASHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,566, dated May 7, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHIAS K. Mounts, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and in the State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dish- Washers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the upper side of the same; and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on line as w of Fig. 1.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention belongs to a class of devices used for washing soiled dishes mechanically; and it consists principally in the combination and arrangement of the ledges or shelves within the interior and at the ends of the easing, substantially as and for the purpose here- It consists, further, in the device as a whole, when constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A and A represent the sides of the casing, secured together in a vertical position, and parallel with each other, by means of a horizontal plane top piece, B, which incloses their upper side, and at their lower side and ends by means of a bottom piece, 0, which has longitudinally a semicircular form, so that when placed upon a table or other suitable support said casing may be oscillated or rocked. Within the interior of the casing, at each end, is arranged a number ofhorizontal shelves, D, which extend between the sides and from the ends inward about onethird the length of said casing, the sides and ends of said shelves being secured to or upon the contiguous portions of the casing, while their front edges are secured in relative position and supported by means of one or more wires, E, which extend between the top B and bottom 0, and are connected to or with said shelves. Immediately over the central open portion of the casing an opening, F, is provided in and through the top B, which opening is surrounded by a flange, f, and inclosed by means of a cover, G, upon the lower side of which is secured one end of a spiral spring, H, that from thence extends vertically downward, and at its lower end bears against the bottom of the casing. An opening, I, provided at or near the lower edge and longitudinal center of one of the sides A, a handle, y, secured upon the cover G, and a handle, K, at tached to or upon each end of the casin g, completes the device, the operation of which is as follows:
The dishes to be cleansed are placed within the central portion ot the casing; from three to four inches in depth of boiling water is poured over them and the lid replaced, with the spring bearing upon said dishes and con fining them in place. The device is now rocked to and fro, so as to cause the water to pass from end to end, when, by the action of the shelves or ledges, said water is thrown inward upon the dishes, so as to subject all portions of the latter to the action of the same.
By this means, and without the usual labor, soiled dishes may be quickly and thoroughly cleansed, and one of the most disagreeable portions of housework rendered more attractive and easy.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and rnerits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s 1. In combination with an oscillating or rocking dish-washer, A, B, and C, a series of ledges or shelves, D, for reversing the motion of the water and throwing the same over or upon the articles to be cleansed, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
2. The hereinbetore-described device as a whole, consisting of the casing A, B, and (l, constructed as shown, and provided with the shelves D, the cover G, and the spring H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of March, 1872.
MATTHIAS K. MORRIS.
