To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ARTHUR J. Honor. and HENRY B. RuoeLns, citizens of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Head Seals, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in barrel head seals and fasteners and is an improvement upon our co-pending barrel head seal applications, Serial Nos. 44,237 filed Aug. 7, 1915, and 44,454 filed Aug. 9, 1915, and is especially adapted, as in the referred to co-pending applications, for securing and sealing in position barrel heads of the type shown in our co-pending applications, Serial Nos. 21,432, filed April 14, 1915, and 24,077, filed April 26, 1915.

The invention has for another object the provision of a form of seal of this character which will be constructed in such manner that it may be readily inserted and secured in position and securely fastened to seal the barrel head with which it is engaged and prevent removal of the barrel head without destruction of the seal.

The invention has for a further object, the provision of a barrel head seal and fastener of the above stated character which will be constructed in such manner that an extension of the body plate of the main seal member may be bent over the remaining portion of said body plate and clamped with the same to conceal and prevent withdrawal of the auxiliary seal member, thereby making it impossible to remove the barrel head after the same has been expanded and securely sealed in position within the receptacle.

The invention has for a still further object, the provision of a barrel head seal of this type which will be composed of the minimum number of parts and which will be constructed in such manner that the extension of the body of the main seal member may be clamped around the forward edge of the remaining or stationary portion of said body plate, after being bent over the same to cover and protect and prevent withdrawal of the auxiliary seal member.

The invention has for still another object, the provision of a barrel head seal and fastener of this character which will be composed of only two parts of simple construction and which may be readily manufactured in blank form and bent or hammered to the desired shape.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more in detail described, and the asserted novelty specifically pointed out in the claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates a portion of a barrel or other receptacle, within the croze 2 of which is positioned the inner head member 3, which is preferably flat and solid and may be formed of any suitable material, as for instance, compressed pulp, fiber or the like, and upon which rests the edge of the outer barrel head member a, usually of the same material as the member 3, which member 4 is preferably of concave-convex form and provided with a radial slit 5 extending from the edge of the outer head member 4 to the central opening 7 which is suitably reinforced, as will be readily understood by referring to Figs. 2, 3 and 4: of the drawings. What is claimed is 1. Bi barrel head seal and fastener incliiding a main seal member having a body plate ate 9, as clearly shown in Fig. i

and an extension formed with the latter, an auxiliary seal member removably engaged through said body plate and cooperating with the main seal member, said main seal member having a shank depending from said body plate, said extension being adapted to be bent back over said body plate to cover and protect the auxiliary seal member, the edges of said extension and said body plate being adapted to be clamped together, and locking ears carried by the shank of the main seal member.

2-. A barrel head seal and fastener comprising a main seal member including a body plate having a shank depending from the same for engagement through a barrel head to expand the latter within a receptaole, an extension plate extending from one edge of said body plate, an auxiliary seal member removably engaged through said body plate adjacent said shank, said extension plate being adapted to be bent back over said body plate and said auxiliary seal member and clamped around the opposite edge of said body plate to prevent wit-hdrawal of said auxiliary seal member, and locking ears carried by said shank.

A barrel head seal and fastener comprising a main seal member including a body plate, having one edge bent upwardly and outwardly, and an extension and sealing plate projecting from the opposite edge of said body plate, and an auxiliary seal member depending through said body plate and having a flattened portion resting upon the latter, said extension plate being adapted to be bent back over said body plate and said auxiliary seal member and clamped around the upwardly and outwardly bent edge of said body plate to prevent movement or withdrawal of said auxiliary seal member.

4. A barrel head seal and fastener comprising the combination with a main seal member having an opening formed therein and a sealing extension plate projecting from one edge; of an auxiliary seal member removably engaged through said opening and having a portion resting upon the upper face of said body plate, said sealing extension plate being bent back over said body plate and a portion of said auxiliary seal member resting upon the same and secured to the opposite edge of said body plate.
