Description

n JU.-S. MITCHELL & D. E. BENEDICT. f-wBuckles-andLoops for Trunks. N0126,564, Patented May7,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. MITCHELL AND DAVID E. BENEDICT, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES AND LOPS FOR TRUNKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,564, dated May 7, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN S. MITCHELL and DAVID E. BENEDIGT, of the city of Newark, New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Combination Roller-Buckle and Loop for Trunks; and We do declare that the following, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a full and clear description of the same.
In the drawing, Figure l is a plan view of our improved buckle; Fig. 2, a side view, partly in section; Fig. 3, a bottom view of the improvements Fig. 4, a view ofthe buckle, showing the loose ring Fig. 5, an end view of the same, showing the projection and teeth; Fig. 6, a View, showing the manner of securing the strap to the buckle.
lhe object of our invention is to dispense with the use of the loops and straps, &c., which are now being used to secure the buckles and loops to trunks, and also to secure beauty of finish and durability. To accomplish these results our invention consists in the buckle and loop being cast solid, and having anges a on the bottom side thereof, projecting downward so as to form a box or recess corresponding to the thickness of the strap, and in which said strap of leather is inclosed, substantially as shown in Fig. 6. At each corner of said flanges there is a projection or tooth, b, intended to penetrate the wood or leather for the purpose of holding the buckle more secureljr in its place. The buckle is also provided with two or more stationary rivets, c c, which should be long enough to pass through the material of which the trunk is made and rivet on the inside.
It will be observed that upon each side of the tongue, at the joint thereof, are two projections, d d, forming inclined planes, which serve to guide the end of the strap A when inserted into the buckle B, and obviate the necessity of bending the end of said strap, which otherwise would come in contact with the tongue and heel of the buckle.
The front part of the buckle is provided with a loose band or ring, C, and is slightly curved upward so as freely to admit the strap. The loop D is also curved in the same manner, and provided with a similar loose band or ring, and also with stationary rivets and teeth c c, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 4.
As our invention is clearly shown in the drawing, a further description is deemed unnecessary.
What we claim as new, and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The buckle-frame B formed with the projections d d, and with the strap-loop having lugs c c and side anges a a, with or Without the ears b b, all in one piece of metal, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the loop D, having projections c e and lugs c, as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN S. MITCHELL. DAVID E. BENEDICT.
