Description
W. R. EIMER STENCIL MOUNT. APPLIEATION FILED APR-20. 19w.
Patented May 7,1918.
UNKE
WALTER R. EIMER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STENCIL-MOUNT.
Application filed April 20, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER R. EIMnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stencil-Mounts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for stenciling characters, figures, designs, etc., upon bottles, flasks and other articles of glass or the like, upon which etching is to be performed.
The use of stencil plates for the purpose stated has hitherto been found unde irable, for the reason that even with the exercise of great care by the operator the metal plate is apt to scratch the film or coating of paraffin which has been provided upon the glass surface, so that in applying the etching acid, the surface of the article may become marred through the acid attacking said surface through such scratches.
Further, no convenient means are in use for holding a stencil plate in position upon an article of the character indicated, and my invention therefore comprehends a combined stencil mount and retaining means whereby the stencil plate may be held firmly in positionupon the object, without danger of disturbing its waxed surface, While the stencil outlines are being traced with a stylus.
Therefore my invention, in brief, consists of a stencil plate, secured upon a mat or base of soft material, like chamois, which can be wrapped, contactingly, around the bottle or other article which has received a wax coating preparatory to the stenciling operation, the field of this soft material being of sufficient extent so thatits ends may be grasped by the operator with one hand, to hold it and the stencil plate firmly to the article. A clearance is left in the soft material. behind the stencil apertures, to permit the stylus to impinge through these apertures directly upon the waxed surface.
ther features and advantages of my said invention will hereinafter appear.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a flask show- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1918.
Serial No. 163,382.
ing my improved stencil mount applied thereto, and
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the same.
The drawing shows a strip of soft surfaced material, a, such for example as chamois, fabric, or the like, whose character is such that it may be applied to a waxed or coated surface for etching purposes, without scratching such surface.
The strip a is intended to serve as a mount for a stencil plate, as b, and to be suitably held in position upon a bottle, flask, or other vessel, while the outlines of figures, 5 characters or designs are marked upon a waxed or other prepared etching surface with which such vessel has been provided, in the usual manner.
In the example illustrated, the strip a, is 7 of sufficient length to wrap about the bottle to be etched, and to permit the ends of the strip to be grasped by the operators hand, to thus draw said strip tightly about the bottle.
The stencil plate 6 is glued, cemented, or otherwise secured upon the outer surface of the strip a, which latter has a portion of its material cut away, to form a clearance c; exposing, at its reverse side, the stencil apertures which comprise the characters to be delineated in the wax surface for etching purposes.
It will be apparent that the operator, by the use of this device, may hold the stencil strip with one hand to the bottle and by the same means hold the bottle in position for convenient stenciling thereon with a stylus held in his other hand.
It is also evident that the stencil strip may be otherwise secured to the bottle to thus leave the operator the freedom of both hands.
Variations may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of my invention. 9:-
I claim:
1. In a stenciling device for bottles and the like comprising a stencil plate, a backing therefor of soft material, to fit snugly v against the surface prepared for etching. said soft material having a clearance to expose the stencil apertures at the reverse side plate to afiford mean 01 holding sail device in opera pcsiiicm While tracing through the stencil apertures upon the etching surface.
In & stencil'ing device for bottles and the like comprishw n stencil plate, a mount secured. theretc, eemwcsed of a sheet of soft surfaced material of sufl'lcient area to Wrap about the bottle, whereby the ends of said sheci may he drawn iiogefhcr and gl'aspefl upieg cf paienc be obtaineci fer five can cs ashin mecca;
of the plate and projecting beyonu the h the operatcr' hand, said mounthaving u. clearance to expose to the etching surface the stencil apertures in said plate.
Signed at the borough of Manhattan in the city, county and State of New York this 7th day of April, A. D. 1917.
