Application fi ed. M y 4, 1922. Serial No. 558,424.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER H. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in hilagnifying Paper Weights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper weights of the kind which may also be used as magnifying glasses.
The objects of the invention are to provide a device of this kind which is made of a single piece of glass and is so formed that when the device rests upon an article, the article will be in focus, so that it is not necessary to move the glass toward and from the article to find the focus nor to hold the glass while looking through the same; also to improve devices of this kind in other respects hereinafter specified.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a combined paperweight and magnifying glass embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a central sectional elevation thereof.
The article of manufacture embodying this invention includes a single piece or block of glass which is of such size as to enable the same to act suitably as a paperweight. The article is provided with a base portion A adapted to rest on the paper or other article to be magnified and the upper surface B is curved so as to be in focus with the plane upon which. the article rests. In order to make it possible for the upper surface to be properly in focus with the plane of the surface on which the article rests, the article is made relatively high which also makes the article useful as a paperweight. By so forming the article that the upper curved surf-ace is in focus with the plane on which the bottom rests it is obvious that the necessity of moving the article to and from the object to be magnified for the purpose of finding its focal point is eliminated, as well as the necessity for holding the article while using the same for magnifying purposes. By means of the construction described the upper surface can be immediately placed into correct focal relation to the article to be magnified by placing the'base of the device in contact with the object which is to be magnifis t If desired, the base A of the article may be concaved as in the construction shown, preferably in such a manner that only a small portion of the base will rest upon the surface on which the article is placed. This concave face prevents the scratching or wearing of the bottom of the article as the same is moved over a desk or other supporting surface, since if the lower surface of the article should become scratched, blurred or otherwise worn or damaged, it would become semi-opaque and thus interfere with the function of the device as a magnifying glass. The article shown is substantially square in horizontal cross section but may be of any other desired shape or form. By making the article of polygonal cross section and providing the article with a concave bottom face, the corners of the article form feet upon which the article rests. The article may, however, be of cylindrical or other form.
The article may readily be used for advertising purposes, in which case the advertisements may be etched or otherwise placed on the sides of the article without interfering with the uses thereof. The article is decidedly attractive in appearance and is therefore desirable as an ornament on a desk or writing table and serves the two-fold purpose of acting as a paperweight owing to a considerable bulk of glass used in the article, and also acts as a magnifying glass which can be very readily used in that it is not necessary to first move the glass toward and from the object to be magnified to find the correct focal distance, but the article can be placed immediately into correct relation to the object to be magnified by placing the base of the article in contact with the object. It is also a desirable feature of this invention that the article is so formed that it will be naturally placed upon its base and while in this position it performs simultaneously the two functions for which the article is intended.
I claim as my invention:
1. A combined paperweight and magnifying glass comprising a single piece of glass which is shaped to form a base and having an integral top portion having an upper convexly curved face which is in fo one with the plane on which the base rests, the bottom face of the article being concaved so that the article rests on the edge portions of the base to prevent injury to said concaved face, the article having substantially upright and relatively high surface portions which extend from the base to the convex upper face.
2. A. combined paperweight and magnifying glass comprising a single piece of glass which is shaped to form a base and having an integral top portion having an upper curved face which is in focus with the plane on which the base rests, the bottom face of the article being con-caved and the article having relatively high plane sides and be ing polygonal. in cross section so that the lower ends of the corners of the article form feet on which the article may rest.
