ENSILAGE-CUTTING-WHEEL CONSTRUCTION.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED J. BULLOCK, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Shortsville, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ensilage- Cutting-Wheel Construction, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
, This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ensilage cutting wheel construction and more particularly to the construction of the fan blades used in connection with ensilage cutters, the object being to provide a cutting wheel construction having means for holding the fan blade supports in such a manner that the strain on the connecting rivets is reduced.
Another object of my invention is to provide a fan construction in which the blade is formed of two sections, one section being adjustably mounted in respect to the other section so that the same canbe adjusted as the blade wears.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1, is a detail section through the cutting wheel casing, showing the cutting wheel in section and one of the fans in elevation;
Fig. 2, is a detail plan view showing the position of the fan on the cutting wheel;
Fig. 3, is a detail side elevation of the cutting wheel showing the fan in side elevation; and
Fig. 4, is a detail view of the fan partly in section, showing the manner of mounting the detachable blade section.
Fig. 5 is a detail section through the cutting wheel showing a slightly modified form of fan construction.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawing, 2 indicates the cutting wheel casing, 1 the cutting wheel which is provided upon opposite faces with lugs 3 and l adapted to engage the legs 5 of a fan support 6 which is provided with an integral blade portion 7 and a removable blade portion 8.
The fan support 6 is adapted to straddle the cutting wheel 1, thelegs extending between the lugs 3 and 4 and are secured by transversely arranged rivets 9.
It will be seen that the lugs 3 and 4 are so placed on the cutting wheel, that when the legs are in the position as shown in Fig. 3, the rivets will be relieved of the strain so as to prevent the rivets from shearing off when the cutting wheel is in operation.
The support 6 is provided with oppositely disposed apertured arms 10 adapted to register with apertured lugs 11 formed on the movable section 8 of the fan blade and between which is adapted to be arranged a filler 12 for holding the arm 10 and lugs 11 the proper distance apart, so as to adjust the movable section in respect to the rigid section? whereby the edge of the movable section can beadjusted within the fan casing at the proper distance from the inner wall thereof and as the blade wears the filler 12 can be removed and a thinner filler substituted therefor.
The movable section is secured to the support by bolts 13 passing through the apertured lugs 11, filler 12 and arms 10 the nuts thereof, being preferably secured by cotter pins as shown.
In the construction of fan as shown in Fig. 5, the cutting wheel 1 is provided with lugs 3 and 4 upon one side thereof between which is adapted to be arranged a fan sup port 5 which is provided with an integral blade portion 7 and a removableblade portion 8'.
The support 5' is secured in position on the cutting wheel 1 on rivets 9 and is provided with an apertured arm 10' adapted to register with an apertured lug 11 formed on the movable blade section 8 of the fan blade and between which is adapted to be arranged a filler 12 for holding the arm 10' and 11 the proper distance apart so as to adjust the movable section in respect to the rigid section. A bolt 13 is employed for securing the movable section to the support.
In this construction it will be seen that I have provided a cutting wheel with a fan support and blade which is adapted to be used in connection with an ensilage cutter in which the cutting wheel is mounted adjacent one wall of the casing.
It will be seen that in the preferred form and in the modification, the fan support is provided with an arm under which a lug of the movable blade section is mounted in such a manner that the outward movement of the movable blade section is limited so that it is impossible to become detached from the support as long as the bolt remains in position even if the nut should become accidentally detached.
From the foregoing description, it willibe seen that I have provided an ensilage cutting wheel construction having means for mounting the 'fan supports thereon in such a manner that they are held rigidly so as to prevent the strain from being placed upon the securing rivets, the supports being formed with a rigid blade section and a movable blade section which can be adjusted in respect to the rigid section.
Iclaim:
1. 'A. wheel having spaced lugs formed on the sides thereof, supports provided with legs embracing said wheel extending between said lugs, fastening members connecting said legs, said supports being provided with integral fan blades, and adjustable fan blades carried by said supports.
2. A wheel having supports provided with spaced legs secured thereto, said supports having integral it'an blade portions and movable fan blade portions, the time of the adjustable blade portion being flush with the integral portion of said supports.
3. A wheel having a .fan support provided with spaced legs embracing the wheel and extending outwardly therefrom forming an integralblade portion for said support, said support having an adjustable blade section secured thereto having its face flush with theinteg'ral blade portion.

5. Afivvheel having spaced lugs secured to the side faces thereof, a fan support'providedwithspaced legs straddling said support and extending between the lugs thereof, said support being provided with an integral portion, and an adjust-able blade portion carried by said support.
