T o all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES lvl/V. CoRDnnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Talladega, in the county of Talladegaand State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful l/Vheel-Rim, of which the following is a specification. i'
The device forming the subject matter' ot this application is a demountable rim, and
ydetails of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made Within the Scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l shows in side elevation, a rim embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmental plan showing a portion of the under side of the structure delineated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmental plan showing a'portion of the outer side of the structure depicted in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section taken through the meeting ends of the rim. A
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 denotes a resilient metallic rim including a base 2 and .side flanges 3. the flanges 3 being of any desired form. rThe rimv 1 is divided to form ends 4 and 5. In the base portion of the end 5 there is fashioned a slot 6 defining prongs 7. Extended along the inner faces of the prongs 7 on each side of the slot 6 and substantially coeie tensive in length therewith are strips 8 which serve to reinforce and strengthen the prongs. The strips 8 are supplied with sockets 9. Extended transversely of the slot G at the outer end thereof and superposed on the strips 8 is a tie plate 10. Securing elements 11 unite the inner ends of the strips Specification of Letters Patent.

8 with the prongs 7, and securing elements 12 unite both the outer ends of the strips 8 and 'the extremities of the side plate 10 with the end portions of the prongs 7. Mounted in the sockets 9 of the strips 8 is a fulcrum pin 14 passing through an eye 15 formed in a lever 16, the eye 15 being so located in the lever that the lever is divided., by the eye 15, into a long end 17 and a short end 18, the long end 18 of the lever extending beneath the end 5 of the rim beyond the base of the slot- 6, and thevshort end 17 of the lever being mounted to move in the slot. The short end 17 of the lever terminates in an eye 19 carrying a connecting' pin 2O received in sockets 21 formed in plates 22 applied to the end 4 of the rim and held thereon by securing elements 23. For a purpose to be described hereinafter, the flanges 3 on the end 5 are beveled as shown at 24.
In practical operation, when the free end 17 of the lever 16 is swung from the solid line position of Fig. 1 to the dotted line position of said figure, the end 5 of the rim will be carried inwardly and circumferentially, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus effecting a contraction of the rim. vgWhen the free end 17 of the lever is swung back into abutment with the end 5, as shown in solid line in Fig. 1, the rim will be expanded. It is in order to permit proper relative movement between the ends 4i and 5, that the flanges of the end 5 are beveled'as shown at 24.
The strips 8, being substantially coextensive in length with the slot 6 serve to reinforce the prongs 7. Further, the tie plate 1() prevents a spreading apart of the prongs 7, due to the iniation of the tire on the rim, or due to any other cause. The plates 22 serve to reinforce the end f1 of the rim. nilhe tie plate 10 exercises an important function when the parts are arranged as shown in solid line in Fig. 1. Under such circumstances, the tie plate 10, being securely mounted on the end 5, prevents the said end from springing outwardly, the tie plate c0- acting with the end 18 of the iever, across which the tie plate extends, clearly shown in the drawings.
Especial attention is directed 'to the fact that the sockets 9 are oiiset suhciently so that the lever 16 is not seated between the prongs 7, when the end 17 of the lever abuts against the end 5 of the rim, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Aswing laterally, the ends 4 and 5 4of the rim being held in alinement. Y
Having thus described vthe invention, What is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a rim which is divided to form relatively 'movable primary and secondary ends, the
primary end being terminally provided with 5 a slot defining prongs; strips secured to the inner sides of the prongs and substantially coextensive in length with the slot, the strips f constituting reinforcements for the prongs;
- atie plate extended across the slot at the outer end thereof, the ends of the tie plate `of the tie plate, one extremity of the lever being pivoted to the secondary end of the rim, and the other extremity of the lever being adapted to lie against the inner surface of the primary end of the rim; and a fulcruni for the lever, the strips having sockets receiving the ulcrum, and the sockets being offset to prevent a seating of the lever between the prongs.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two, Witnesses.
JAMES WILEY CORDELL.
