HOUSING FOR SPRING-HINGES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL BOMMER, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Housings for Spring-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to housings for spring hinges, such as are used on doors and the like, and has for its object to provide a simple and very strong spring housing, particularly of the double spring type, which can be made readily from a single piece of fiat sheet metal, and in which the springcontaining portions or barrels will have unbroken surfaces from end to end. The joints or fastenings of my improved spring housing are exclusively at the top and bottom edges of the intermediate portion or web which lies between the two spring barrels. Other features and advantages of my invention will be pointed out in the detailed description following hereinafter, and the novelty will then be defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a flat sheet metal blank from which one form of my invention is produced;

of sheet metal, generally sheet steel, whose shape is approximately that of a T, that is to say, it is a long rectangular strip widened at one end. This blank is produced by stamping or otherwise. The dotted vertical and horizontal lines in Fig. 1 indicate the junction of the several portions of the finished article made from this blank by bending it to the shape shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. It will be seen that the portions 21 and 23 are bent into cylindrical shape, to form parallel vertical barrels for receiving the coiled springs of a double spring hinge. These two portions 21 and 28 are alike as to height and width or diameter. The portion 22 lying between the portions 21 and 23 remains flat, and in the finished articles lies between the end portions 20 and 24 which are likewise left flat. The width of the three portions 20, 22 and 24 of the blank is the same. The extensions 25 projecting at the top and bottom of the end portion 24 are of the same width as said end portion. After the blank has been folded and bent to form the two spring barrels 21 and 23, as in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, with the three flat portions 20, 22 and 24 lying against each other as illustrated, one free edge 26 of the material will be adjacent to one of the barrels (barrel 28) at the inner portion thereof, and the other free edge 27 will be similarly adjacent to the other barrel 21, but the extensions 25 will still project above and below the end portion 24. Thereupon these extensions are folded downwardly and upwardly respectively over the adjacent horizontal edges of the three contiguous flat portions 20, 22 and 24, thus forming a sheath (see Fig. 4) which embraces the horizontal edges of the threeply web constituted by said three portions. Preferably the bending of the flaps or extensions 25 is effected by means of machinery which at the same time exerts suiiicient pressure on the portion 24 to produce thereon a shoulder or ridge 28 which will correspond in position and appearance to the horizontal free edge of the folded extension shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The two sides of the finished article will thus look alike, or practically so. It will be noted that at the U-shaped sheaths formed by the flaps 25,
10 relatively low cost both as to material and there are four plies of material, while the body of the web has only three plies; thus additional strength is obtained at these sheaths. It will also be noted that the only joints or fastenings for ,keeping the parts of the finished article together, are along the upper and lower edges of the web which is interposed between the two barrels 21, 23. Thus I obtain a very strong and simple con.- struction which may be manufactured at as to machinery and labor required.
' The form of my invention illustrated by Figs. 5 and 6 differs from the one first descrlbed in this respect, that the horizontal upper and lower edges of the Web portions and 22, instead of being flush with the corresponding ends of the barrel portions, are slightly to the inside of the levels of the ends, or in other Words, the web portions 20 22 are of a height slightly less than that of the barrel portions 21 23. As a result of this, the sheaths formed by bending the flaps or extensions over the top and bottom edges of said web portions 20, 22, will be flush with the end surfaces of the barrel portions 21, 23, whereas Figs. 2 and 4 show the sheaths 25 projecting beyond the end surfaces of said barrel portions.
The third form ofmy invention, shown in Figs. 7 and 8, has the parts 21 and 23 of the same construction as described above. The central web portion 22 is of smaller height than the barrel portions 21, 23, and in the particular example shown, its height is slightly greater than that of the web portion 22 of Figs. 5 and 6, so that the sheaths at the top and bottom of the web project slightly beyond the end surfaces of the barrel portions 21, 23. The other web portions 20", 24 are of the same height as the central portion 22, and are provided with upward and downward extensions or flaps 25, I
25", the combined width of adjacent flaps being equal to that of the, web. For instance, as shown, the width of each flap may be equal to one-half the width of the web, and the flaps 25 of the web portion 20" may be'adjacent to. the barrel 23, while the flaps 25 of the web portion 24" are adjacent to the barrel 21. These flaps are bent over the horizontal edges of the web in opposite directions as shown at the lower portions of Figs. 7 and 8, and pressed or crimped into place sot-hat the final result, in appearance, will be substantially the same as in Fig. 2, xcept that a vertical line 29 will show. at the center of each sheath. A subsequent polishing or plating operation, however, may conceal these vertical lines.
Still anothfil" form of my, invention is shown in Figs, 9 and 10, in, which. thecentral web portion 22 has the same height (relatively to the barrels 21, 23) as in Figs. 5 and 6, so that the sheaths at the upper and lower edges of the web are-flush with the end surfaces of the barrels 21, 23. The Web portions ,20#, 24 are of smaller height than the web portion 22, for about half their width, adjacent to one of the barrels, and adjacent to the other barrel, each of said web portions is provided at the top and bottom with flaps or extensions 25 25 of such length that when folded over the central web portion 22 to form the sheath, they will reach to, but not beyond the upper or lower edges of the respective web portions 20, or 24C In this form of my invention, therefore, the web will be only three-ply from top to bottom, even at the sheaths, whereas it is four-ply at the sheaths inv the three forms of construction first described. The arrangement of the flaps or extensions 25*, 25 relatively to the barrel portions 21, 23 will be substantially the same as described with reference to the flaps 25, 25", that is to say, the flaps 25*. on the web portion 20 will be adjacent to, one barrelportion, say 23, while the flaps 25 on the web portion 24,# are adjacent to the other barrel ortion 21, and the adjacent flaps will be fo ded in opposite directions over the same edge of the central web portion 20'.
I have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory embodiments of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A housing for the springs of spring unbroken surfaces from end to end, the central ply connecting said barrels, whilethe outside plies are formed by the ends of said piece of sheet metal, the transverse edges of the web, between the barrels, having sheaths formed by, bending outer ply portions of the web, forming end parts of said piece of sheet metal, fromone face of the web to the opposite face thereof.
