Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I FRENCH B. VVILLrAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Cotton Gin or Linter Saw-Gumming Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to saw gumming machines and it has particular reference to a machine for gumming the saws of cotton gins, linters and the like.
One object of the invention is to produce a saw gumming machine of the class described of simple and improved construction in which the operation of gumming the saws is performed by chisels, the same being mechanically struck with hammers.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and improved construction whereby a plurality of chisels carried by a bar may be simultaneously moved to a non-engaging position with respect to the saws while the latter are fed or rotated the space of one tooth to place the saw teeth in position for the next operation of the chisels.
Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the general construction, arrangement and combination of parts constituting the invention.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same con sists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a machine constructed in accordance with the invention.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The frame of the machine which is generally designated by 15 is provided with bearings for a driven shaft 16, said shaft having been shown as being provided with a pulley 17 adapted to receive motion through the medium of a belt or band 18 from any convenient source of power. The shaft 16 is disposed intermediate an upper shaft 19 and a lower shaft 20, each of said shafts being supported for rotation in suitable bearings on the frame structure. The shaft 16 is provided with pinions 21 meshing with spur wheels 22 on the shaft 19 and with spur wheels 23 on the shaft 20, both of said shafts being thus driven by power transmitted through the medium of a shaft 16'. Supported for rotation in bearings 24 on the frame structure in advance of the shaft 19 is a rock shaft 25 on which are mounted a plurality of striking members or hammers H the same having forwardly extending striking arms 26 and rearwardly extending beveled arms 27, the latter arms lying in the path of a rod 28 which connects the spur wheels 22 which latter are located near the respective ends of the frame so that the rod 28 will be adapted to simultaneously engage the entire series of hammers H.
The shaft 20 which carries the spur wheels 23 receiving motion from the pinions 21 is provided with radially extending tappet members 29 adapted for engagement with the rearwardly extending arms of levers 30 which are fulcrumed at 31. The forwardly extending arms of said levers are pivotally connected with upwardly extending limbs 32 carrying a cross bar 33 which extends practically the entire distance between the end members of the-frame structure 15. The
bar 33 is equipped with a plurality of chisels v in operation. The tappet members 29 are so arranged with respect to the rod 28 whereby the hammers are actuated, that the chisel carrying bar will be lifted at some period during the intervals between the delivery of two successive blows by the hammers H.
The saw arbor 87 is supported for rotation in brackets 38' on the frame structure, and said arbor may carry any desired number of saws, some of which are indicated at 89, it being obvious that the saws are to be arranged in registry with the chisels and with the hammers whereby the chisels are actuated. Mounted on the saw arbor is a ratchet wheel 4:0,the same being engaged by a pulling dog or pawl ll which is mounted on an eccentric as on the shaft 19 so that by the rotation of said shaft the saw arbor will be intermittently rotated, the Parts being of course proportioned and the operation timed in such a manner that the saws will be fed forward the space of a single tooth in the interval between the delivery of successive blows and at the time when the bar carrying the chisels is in a raised position supporting the chisels in non-engaging relationto the saws.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The construction of the improved machine is very simple, and the saws of cotton gins, linters and like machinery may be gummed very quickly and efiiciently and in an economical time saving manner.
It will be observed that after imparting of the feed motion to the saw arbor the chisel carrying bar will be gravitationally lowered until the chisels engage the interspacesbetween the saw teeth, being thereby Copies of this patent may operate effectively be obtained for five cents each,
supported exactly in the proper position to when struck by the hammers. Following the strike of the chisels by the hammers, the chisel carrying bar will be lifted, thus supporting the chisels out of engagement with the saws while the saw arbor is being rotated to feed the saws forward a space of one tooth after which the chisel carrying bar gravitationally returns to the proper position for the chisels to receive another blow.
I claim In a machine of the class described, a frame structure, a for rotation and having pinions near the ends thereof, top and bottom shafts arranged respectively above and below the driven shaft and having spur wheels meshing with the pinions on said shaft, a rod connecting the spur wheels of the upper shaft, a rock shaft having hammers provided with forwardly extending striking arms and with rearwardly extending beveled arms, the latter arranged in the path of said the bottom shaft,
rod, tappet members onv levers having forwardly extending arms and rearwardly extending arms, the latter lying in the path of the tappet members, links pivotally iconnected with the forwardly extending arms of the levers, a bar carried by said links, and chisels carried by said bar, said chisels being arranged in the path of the striking arms of the hammers carried by the rock shaft.
