Breaking and scutching apparatus.-Flax and like fibrous plants are cleaned and prepared by passing them between fluted members 39, 39<1>, Fig. 2, which break the woody matter and bend the stalks. The direction of motion of the members is then reversed and the stalks are folded back upon themselves as shown in Fig. 3, and are subjected to end thrusts. The forward movement is substantially twice the backward movement. This process is repeated several times and the stalks finally cleaned by beaters 41, Fig. 5. The fluted members 35, 38, 39, the flutings on which gradually decrease in size, are driven by a rack 27 reciprocated vertically by a crank 24 operated by a treadle 21. The gear 29 meshing with the rack is loose on the spindle 34 and carries a ratchet 32 coacting with pawls 30, one on each side, which are controlled by a cam to give the required variation in the forward and backward movements. The other fluted members are driven from the spindle 34 by a chain 37. The beaters 41 are driven by a chain 42 from the wheel 23. The stalks are fed in vertically through a hopper 20.
