. MEANS non ADJUSTING THE srzn or LEGGINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented May 7, 1918.
Application filed. December 15, 1917. Serial No. 207,307.
To a?Z whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SERTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at #739 Gates Ave, Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and Stateof New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Adjusting the Size of Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to improvements in leggings and it consists in the novel features hereinafter more fully described.
The objects of my improvement are:
First: to provide a legging with a means for adjusting the size thereof to fit the leg of any person.
Second to have said means readily attachable to and detachable from said legg Third: to have said means simple, durable and inexpensive. I v a I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings or by any mechanical equivalent and obvious mod1-- fication thereof.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the clamp and swiveled hook employed in my means for adjusting the size of the legging; Fig. 2 is an end View of said clamp and hook; Fig. 3 is a plan of the same.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of said clamp and hook shown as attached to a piece of cloth and to the adjustable strip 14, which is shown in end view in Fig. 4, while said clamp and hook are shown in side view.
Fig. 5 is a plan showing a portion of said strip as attached to a piece of cloth by means of a row of said clamps and hooks.
Fig. 6 is an elevation of a legging on a small scale showing the full length of said strip in position and said clamps and hooks connected thereto; the legging is shown as closed by means of suitable eyelets 16 in the edge of one side of the legging 15, which eyelets are shown as fastened by said hooks.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views. 11 are the pins of the clamp shown as made in one with the plate 11, which has a central opening for connecting said plate to the lower end of the hook, which terminates at said lower end in the flanges 13 and 13, the lower of said flanges 13 being riveted over or otherwise formed when in place, thereby making a permanent connection with said plate 11, which connectionis also pivotal before the strip 14 is connected described.
The upper flange 13 is shown as made in one with the back 12 of the hook, which terminates at its upper end in the head 12.
A strip of cloth 14 ma'ybeconnected to a series of said hooks 12 13 by making a number of small holesin said strip, then forcing each of said holes over the head 12, back 12" and flange 13" of said hook until the cloth of said strip rests on said plate 11', then sewing up the hole in place so as to keep the upper surface of said flange 13 substantially in the same level with the upper surface of said strip, after the heads 12 of said hooks are made to point all in the same direction; the sewing on of the strip on to "said hook 12-43 will prevent the swiveling of the lower end thereof in said plate 11 which swiveling is only necessary in order to adjust the direction of said heads 12 as hereinbefore described.
The strip is then fastened to the cloth of the legging in any requiredposition thereof, by pressing the pins 11 of the clamps 11-41? through the cloth of the legging, and then bending each-of said pins over and into contact with said cloth, as shown in Fig. 4, in which the lower flange '13 of said hook and the plate 11* of the clamp are shown as pressed into the upper surface of the cloth of the logging 15. This will only be the case when the said pins are clamped on very tight; otherwise the plate 11 will rest on the. surface of said cloth.
The thickness of the diflerent parts of my means for adjusting the size of a legging are shown as exaggerated in the drawings for the sake of clearness, andthe correctness of thereto, as hereinafter the view in Fig. 4, is thereby somewhatim- The pins 11 of the clamps may be preferably made of brass or some other suitable material Wh-ich Will permit the repeated bending and unbendin-g of the same When changing the position of said strip 14, it necessary.
Many changes could be made in my means for aYd usting the size of a, legging Without departing from themain scope of my invention. I do not there-fore restrictmyself to the shape of the details as shown in the drawings but I intend to include also all mechanical equivalents and reasonably obvious modificationsof the same.
\Vhat I claim as my invention and dSire to seei ire by Letters Patent-is:
1. In a cloth legging a means tor adjus-v ing the size thereof comprising a strip; of cloth adapted to be detachablyconnected to said legging near one edge thereof in any required position to make said legging fit the leg of any person, said strip being thereby curved edgeWiSe thereof, hooks on said strip, eyelets on said legging near the other edge thereof and a, 'means 01 detachably connecting said strip to. said legging;
2;, In a cloth legging a means foradjusting the size thereof, comprising a strip of cloth adapted to be detachably connected to i l gg ng in any r quired position to make said legging {it the leg oi any person, aid str p being h reby rv d e g w se thereof, means; for detaohablgyconnecting a d. s ip o helegg ng nearon dge ther of, and a means for :Easteningthe other edge of said leggingto said strip n a cl th legging a means tor adj-11sting the, size thereof, comprising a strip of oth, adapte to be d tachably- Connected to, said legging in any required positionto to said legging any, required position to n kesaid l gg g fit th eg o a y pe s n,
series ot clamps adapted to detachably onnect sa d t ip o. sa leggi gn one edge thereo-i, said clamps terminating at h ir upperen s. in suit ble h oks, extending on the upper side of said strip, and a means for fastening the other edge of said legging to, said hooks.
5, In a cloth legging a means for adjusting the size thereof comprising a series of hooks adapted to be detachably connected near one edg sa ing n required position to make said legging fit the leg of any person, said series being thereby curved edgewise thereof, and eyelets on the other e e thereof, said eyelets being adapted to engage said hooks, thereby closing said ng,-
6. In a legging a means for adjusting the size thereof com-prising a series of clamps adapted to be detachably connected near oneedge of said legging in any required position to make sald legging fit the leg of any person, said clamps terminating at their upper ends 1n suitable hooks, anda means for fasten ng the other edge of sa1d legging toi said hooks.
