Specification 01' Letters Patent.
Patented May '7, 1918.
Application filed May 25, 1917. Serial No. 171,040.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM SCHMIDT and Arrm FILIPPONI, citizens of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer, State of New Jersey, have invented headlights and particularly to dimming devices therefor.
One object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character whereby the light from the lamps will be effectively shielded from the eyes of the pedestrians and other drivers, but by means of which the light will be projected onto the ground with the full intensity.
Another object is .to provide a device of this character which is capable of ready use on lamps now in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a headlight equipped with my improved dimming device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view through the headlight. I
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing 10 re resents the frame of the front of the head ight, in which is secured the usual disk of clear glass 11. Secured at their ends to the said frame and extending transversely of the lamp, in rear of the glassll, are a plurality of brown-or other dark-colored glass slats or strips 12, the rear longer edges of said slats b disposed at higher levels than the front cnger edges,
and said front edges being disposed below 5 the horizontal planes of the rear edges, whereby the light from the lamp will be deflected on the rear faces of the slats downwar'dly toward the round. B this arrangement no direct hght from t e interior of the lamp can be from the front,
thereby protecting the ey s of pedestrians and drivers of other vehic es from the usual blindin glare which emanates from the headlig ts.
What is claimed is: A deflectin device for an automobile Nrcnoms ALIEGRETTI, JOHN Rams.
