COMBINATION PADLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1918.
Appueation mea .my 2a, 1917. seran No. 182,991.
To all whom t may toucern:
Be it knownk that I, GEORGE TAVRA, a citi-k zen of the United States, residing at Eureka, in the county of- Humboldt and State p, of California, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in vCombination-Padlocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates pad lock.
The object of the present invention isy to provide a simple, practical and efficient permutation or combination padlock of strong,
durable and inexpensive construction adapted to be easily operated by any one understanding the combination and equipped with a relatively large number ofrotary rings having notches adapted to be brought into line and coperating with lugs of an arm so that it is necessary to arrange all of the recesses in alinement simultaneously in order to effect an opening of the lock.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the'drawing: y Figure 1 is a perspective view'y of a combination padlock constructed in accordance with this invention. y.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional'view of the same, the `'relatively movable shackle section being unlocked.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the padlock. t
Fig. 4 is a detail of the rotary rings.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures ,of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, `the combination vpadlock comprises in its construction a shackle composed of lixed `and relatively movable sections l and 2, the relatively fixed section lbeing seperspective viewfof kone and exact description ofto aY combination` cured to one end of a spindle 3 which has its other end 4 threaded for the reception ofthe relatively movable shackle section 2. The relatively movable shackle section 2 is provided with a threaded opening 5 for the threadedy end 4 of the spindle, and it is adapted to be rotated to arrange it in' aline ment with the relatively fixed shackle sec-y tion, as illustrated in Fig. A l, and also to swing it away from in dottedlines in Fig. 1. yThe threaded con` nection" betweenthe section 2 and the spindle provides a pivotal or swinging movement for the said section 2 and the threaded opening 5 preferably'extends inwardly from the inner face of the section 2 and terminates short of the outer face thereof. The shackle sections are preferably provided with enlarged circular ends 6 and 7 and are reduced beyond the said ends.
The 'end 6 is provided with a slot 8 which registers with a longitudinal groove 9 in the bottom portion of the spindle to receive an inner arm 10 of a locking member 11 having an outer arm 12 and conforming'tothe configuration of the adjacent shackle section l. The outer arm 12 extends through an opening 13 in the section 1 and is adapted tok project intoy an opening 14 in the section 9.
when the said opening 14 is arranged in alinement with the opening 13. When the` outer arm is engaged in the opening 14, the
said position as shownI section 2 is locked against relative rotary movement, and when the' arm 12 is with"- drawn from the opening 14 the arm 2 is adapted to be rotated on the end of the spindle and it may be screwed on or oil" the same- 4k -close the padlock.
y The inner armlO is provided with recesses 15 forming intervening lugs 16 andy of rings 17, The rings are adapted to receive flanges 16a provided with notches 18. mountedffor rotary movement on the V.spindle the same into and out of and are provided with letters or'other char- 'l acters and they are capable ofrotary movement -to aline the notches 18 to permit the intervening lugs formed by the recesses 15 to pass through the notches of the flanges 16a. When one'or more of the flanges are out of alinement the locking member will be held against movement and as the recesses 15 form a plurality of lugs, each cooperating with one of the rings, it will be impossible for anyone to ascertain the posi-Y tion of the recesses by the pressure of the locking member on the same andit will not be possible to operate the rings successively and out of engagement with the relatively movable shackle sectipn by the sliding movement of the innerarim and a plurality of vringsk mounted on the spindle and having without a knowledge of the recesses and means for engaging the inner arm of the move the locking member outwardly by a step by step movement. liile letters are shown to indicate the position of the rings, numbers may of course be used.
The spindle is providedv with nal slot 19 and the inner arm ofthe locking member carries a pin 2O operating in the slotfor limiting the inward and outward movement of4 the said locking member to prevent the arm from being entirely withdrawn from the opening of the relatively fixed shackle section. A washer 21 is shown arranged between the ends of the pivoted shackle section 2 so that the turning of the movable section of the `shackle will not change the position of the rings.
` What is claim is:
1. A combination padlock of the class de-4 scribed including a shackle divided at the outer portion and composed of relatively fixed and movable sections, a spindle fixed to one of the sections and forming a ypivot for the other section, means for holding the pivoted section against sliding movement on the spindle, a locking member located at the relatively fixed section and conforming to the configuration of andvfitting against the same and extending to the outer end theref of, said locking member being provided with an arm of a length to extend beyond the `fixed section and engage the relatively movable section for holding the same against movement, said locking member being also slidable outwardly to release the relatively movable, shackle, and means for locking the said locking member against such outward sliding movement.
`ZA combination padlock of the class de scribed including a shackle divided at the outer portion and composed of relatively fixed and movable sections, a spindle secured to one'of the sections and forming a pivot for the other section, means for holding the pivoted section against sliding movement on the spindle, against the relatively fixed section and provided vvitli inner and outer arms, the inner arm slidable inwardly and outwardly along the spindle and carrying the locking member and the outer arm being carried into a longitudia locking member fittingl ylocking ,rnemben 3. A combination padlock of' the class de- -scribedincliiding-a shackle divided at the the relatively fixed section and provided with innerand outer arms, the inner 'arm slidable inwardly and outwardly along the spindle and carrying the locking member and the outer arm being carried into and out of' engagement with the relatively movable shackle section by the sliding movement ofv the inner arm, said inner arm being provided at intervals with recesses forming intervening lugs, jand a plurality of rotary rings mounted on the spindle and provided with flanges operating'in the recesses and having notches for the passage of thelugs.
v4L. A combination padlock of the class described including a shackle composed of relatively fixed and movable sections, the relatively fixed section being provided with an opening, a spindle fixed tothe relatively fixed section and having a longitudinal groove extending Vinwardly from the said opening, saidl spindle being also 'provided with a longitudinal slot, a'locking member provided with means for engaging the relatively movable shackle section and having an armv slidable in the groove and passing through the opening 'of the relatively fixed section, said arm beingprovided at inter-f In testimony whereof I ax my signature in presenceof two witnesses. l y GEORGE TAVRA?
