IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,507, dated May 7, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatl, FREEMAN R. WILLSON, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Figs. 3, 4., 5, 6, 7, 8 are detail views of the same.

My invention has relation to the construction of plows; and consists in the devices hereinafter particularly described and claimed.

A of the drawing represents the beam of a plow 5 B, the handles; and (l, a wooden standard. The letter D represents a mold-board, E the land-side, and F the share. The letter G represents a base or saddle, to which the landside is attached and upon which the share and Y mold-board rest.

Inasmuch as my particular method of constructin g this saddle constitutes a leading feature of my invention, I have devoted to its illustration Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 of the drawing. It will be observed that this saddle is so constructed that it serves the purpose of a strengthener and lining to the share and land-side,while, inasmuch as it is fitted in an offset or notch in the lower end of the standard, it does not necessarily occupy space required by any other portion of the plow. The upper face of the saddle G is cut away, as shown at a, or, as is preferable, is cast with a raised head with shoulders, as shown at a, in order to provide means for attaching the share with ease and security. In constructing my plow I form the mold-board in such a manner that it shall project over the shoulders a, as shown at c on Fig. l, and thereby aid in giving firmness and security to the share when attached to the saddle. I also construct the share with flanches, as shown at f, adapted to rest against the shoulders at and under the mold-board point, as above described. In order still further to provide means for attaching and holding the share securely, I make an onset in the saddle, as shown at n, and construct the share with a corresponding flanch adapted to fit therein. This flanch is marked 0 on the drawing. My land-side is constructed of steel, and its bottom is cut away so as to adapt it to receive and hold a cast-iron shoe, marked II. This shoe is constructed with lugs or ears 8 adapted to receive the screws by which it is attached to and made removable from the land-side. The letter 12 represents a notch or recess formed in the bottom of the upright part of the saddle, adapted to receive the front end of the shoe, and the letter y is a similar recess adapted to receive a lug, s, of said shoe. The letter K represents a plate of cast-iron connecting the base of handle B with the standard 0. This plate serves as a continuation of the landside, but, inasmuch as the wear thereon is less than upon the lower section, I find it economical to construct it of cast-iron instead of steel.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
