rno'rnc'ron non cninnnnn. 7 p F To all *whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jon PICKLiES, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at the city of Winnipeg, inthe Province of Manitoba, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Children, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for pro tecting a child from theinclemenc'y of the weather, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this class in which the child may be placed when it is being drawn in a sleigh or carriage, or even when it is being carried by hand, and by which its hands and-arms as well as all other parts of the body including the head when necessary, will be fullyprotected in the severest weather.
Anotherobject of the invention is to so shape the protector that it will conform to the natural sitting posture of the child when in it, and without the bunching and straining of the material necessarily accompanying the changing of the shape of protectors of different construction.
With these and certain other objects in view which will appear aS the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts fully described in the following specification then more particularly pointed outin the appended claims, reference also being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the different views and inwhich Figure 1 shows a child clothed with the device and seated in a sleigh. i
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one of the devices with thelacing removed to show the chest and shoulder protectors separate, the form difieringslightly from that shown in laced farther down. h
Fig. 3 is a section between the lines 3--3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4c is one of the side pieces, these being used in duplicate.
Fig. 5 is the back piece to which the rear ends of the sides are joined.
Fig. 6 is the bottom piece or sole, and
Fig. 7 is the top piece.
The device may be made from a variety of fabrics or even fur, but the intention in the drawings is to show it as formed from the outer and inner sheets of fabric 2 and Fig. 1, in that the side flaps are longer and Specification of Letters Patent.

3 having a sheet of cotton batting dtherebetween, the whole being ,quilted Onfthe The envelop as a Whole resembles a moocasln of very large size but certain points in the construction difierentiateit therefrom and specially adapt it to'the purpose for which itis intended. The cutting .of the variousparts of which the device is built up isof course subject to a wide variation but I prefer to shape the sides 6 as shownin Fig. 4e, these being in duplicate and having forwardly ofiset portionsfi, provided with eyelets 8, to receive a .c0rd9, by which the portions 7 are laced together whenthe article is in use. l i
The rear ends 10 of the sides 6 are joined to the edges 11 of the back 12, the upperportion of the edges of the back and sides being preferably slightly beveled back fas at 13 and let respectively so that the finished article may conform loosely to the shape and shoulders of the child. i The bottom 15 (Fig. 6) corresponding to the sole of. ashoe, is preferably made wider at the rear end 16 than at the front 17 and itis seamed to the lower edges of the sides 6 and back 12. i J
The front 18 is preferably a strip such as shown in Fig. 7 having its forward edge19 then brought up over to form the toe 20 of the device, the edges 21 of thetop being jolned to those'22 of the sides upthe points 23 thereon, the remainder 24 of the top formjoined to the front edge 17 of the bottom ing a chest protector for the child, over which the offset portions 7 of the sides are.
laced. From the foregoing description it will. be understood that when it is desired to make use the envelope p tor t e and-a merely seated therein, the rear end or heel 25 being of a width to accommodate the hips of the child while the toe is preferably square as shown and of ample sizeto receive both feet in vertical position. The front is then laced up by means of the cord 9 thus inclosing the child up to the neck and preventing him from getting his arms out into the cold. Due to the shaping of the sides and back and also the angle at which the forward edges 26 of the parts 7 are cut the upper part of the device draws well in around the neck and the child is fully pro tected.
27 indicates by heavy dotted lines in Fig.
2, and full lines in Fig, 1, a portion ofthe side being broken away to show the same, a
' removable absorbent} pad h avinga water proof bottom, positioned as shown in the rear of the device, the purpose" of which is self evident. V I f The front or top- 18 it will be noted is preferably bifurcated at the top, to provide 1 a circular opening 28 this fitting around the neck'ofthe childwhen the ends 29 are carried' around to the back, the center of the back piece 12 being provided with-a hook 30 and the ends 29 with loops or eyes 31 to 1 be securedqon the said hook, to maintain the ends inposition. As an alternative to the shaping of the top 18 as described, this may be cut on" on the dotted ilines 32 in Fig, 7,.
- ventio'n what I claim is',
1. A garment shaped to provide a lower closed portion and an upper open portion at right angles to the closedportion and merging'the'r'einto, the top of the closed portion beingextended to forma tongue adapted to turn up" in" front of the open' portion, and
the sides of the open portion being shaped to form flaps" adapted to be disengageably connected across the tongue.
v 2.,A garment shaped to provide an en- 7 velop closed for a portion-of its length and havingthe sides andzbackof the remainder extended to form an open portion higher than the'c los'ed portion at right angles therei to" and merging thereinto, the top of the closed portion being extended to form a tongue in front of the openportion, and the sides of the open portion forming flaps adapted to be lace connected across the tongue.
31. A garment having", lower closed portion and an upperopen portion at right ang'lesQ-tothe closed portion and merging thereinto, the said portions being formed from a bottom piece extending the length of both portions, and-sides, rear end and top pieces joined together, the side pieces being shaped to provide a-low portion and a high portion at right angles to the low portion seamed to the rear end piece on upwardly converging lines, the upper piece closing the top of the low portion and extending therebeyond to form a tongue in front of the open portion, and the sides of the open portion forming flaps adapted to be-laced across the tongue.
4. A- garment having an upper open portion and a lower closed portion extending laterally from the open portion, the said portions being formed with an oblong bottom piece extending the length of both portions and sides and a rear end piece seamed together and to the bottom piece around three sides thereof, the said side pieces being shaped to provide a low portion and a high portion adjacent the rear end piece, and flaps on the forward edges of the high portions, a top piece seamed to the front of the bottom piece, thence passing up over and seamed to the front and upper edges of the side pieces the length of their lower portions and extending therebeyond to form a tongue adapted to turn up and form the front of the open portion, the flaps on the sides being adapted to overlap the tongue and to be disengageably connected thereacross,
5. A garment formed from a plurality of parts joined together, the said parts comprising an oblong bottom piece, arear end piece and sides joined to the end piece on upwardly converging lines, the sides being shapedto provide-a low portion and a high portion at right angles to the low portion adjacent the rear end piece and having forwardly extending flaps, atop seamed to the upper-edges ofthe low portion of the sides and extendingtherebeyond-to form a tongue having its extremity bifurcated, means on the rear-end piece and the separated end of the tongue whereby they may be releasably connected, and means to releasably connect the flaps on the sides of the open portion across the tongue.
