A universal bar 12 is disposed transversely in the lower portion of the framework somewhat in advance of the pivotal mountings of the key levers and under the latter so as to be actuated thereby. The universal bar 12 is shown in detail in Figs. 3 to 7 of steel). The sheet metal blank shown in- Fig. 3 comprises a'body-portion 13 provided at respective ends with necks 1115. From the outer end of the neck 14, an arm 16 projects at an obtuse angle therefrom and is formed at its free end with a rounded head 17, while said arm .is provided'centrally be- .tween its ends with a hole 18. Frorn the outer endof the neck 15 at the other end of the'body 13 an arm 19 projects at an obtuse angle 'and is formed near its respec tive ends with fingers 20 and 21. Near the juncture of the finger'QOwith the arm 19, hole '22 is provided in the latter. The side portions of the body 13 of the universal bar blank are bent upwardly to form parallel flanges 23 to engage the side edges of a cushion 24 located on said bar in position to be engaged by enlargements on the lower edges of .the key levers. The outer portion ofthe neck 15L is bent upwardly at right angles so that the ann'will be caused to project upwardly and rearwardly, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and the neck 15 at the other the drawings and maybe conveniently made in a single pieceof'sheet metal (preferably end of the bar is similarly bent so that'the arm 19 will project upwardly and rearwardly. Thus when a key lever is depressed, the downward movement of the universal. bar will cause the plate or carrier 35 to move downwardly and the pawl 36 to ride freely over the-teeth'of the ratchet wheel 34' on the ribbon feed gear shaft. When the key lever is released and permitted to rise, the spring 25 will cause the universal bar to arm 19 of the'un'iversal bar and the plate or carrier 35 will'cause the latter to be raised and the pawl acre propel the ratchet wheel 34, thus turning the ribbon feed gearing and feeding the ribbon a short distance. It will thus be observed that the inking ribbon is rise with it, .and the connection between the' fed on the return stroke o f a key lever and after thejtypehas printed uponthe paper r and a new surface of ribbon will bepre sented ready for the next impressiom With the construction and arrangement of parts abovedescribed,'the paper feed mechanism is operated from one end of. the universal bar during the-depression stroke of a key bar and the ribbon feed mechanism is operated from the other end ofthe universal bar, during the return stroke of a key lever. By such construction, I am enabled to build both feed mechanisms and their operating means in a compact structure which is simple'an'd readily accessible as well as accurate in operation and not liable to get out of order.
Slight changes might be made in the details of constructionof our invention without departing from the' spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence we do not wish to restrict ourselves to the precise details herein set forth. 1
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure" by Letters-Patent,.is:':
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with key levers, ribbon mechanism and paper. feed mechanism, of a universal bar disposed under the key levers, said bar having upwardly projecting arms at its respec .tiveends, means pivotally supporting said arms to pivotally support the universal bar nism,and operating connections between the free end of the arm at the other end of said bar and the paper feeding mechanism.
