I the following is a specification.
.This invention relates broadly to typewriting machines and specifically to ribbon mechanism adapted particularly to typewriti'ng/machines of the folding type.
' \The principal object of this invention is I to construct a ribbon mechanism in such manner that the ribbon will be fed a cloth nite distance during each movei'nent of the key levers, the arrangement of parts being such that the ribbon spools and ribbon vibrator may be folded to abnormal positions and the immediate key actuated mechanism will maintain its normal position in the typewriting machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a ribbon mechanism particularly adapted for a typewriting machine of the folding type, in which the ribbon spools are carried u-po'n foldable members attached to the machine frame.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a ribbon mechanism for a typo writing machine in which the platc'ncarriage is shifted -through an arc when it is moved from upper to lower case position and vthe ribbon spools are adapted to-be nioved together'w-ith the platen carriage.
A still further objectof thejnvention is to construct a ribbon; mechanism for a type writing machine in which the ribbon spools are directly actuated by a'ratchet mechanism which is shi'ftable with the platen carriage to upper and lower case position.
A still further object of the ini'ention is to-construct a simple spring which maintains botha holding dog a 1i a mo able dog in engagement with the ;;.tchet wheel for operating'a ribbon spool.

The typewriting n'rzehine illustrated in the drawings, and to which any ribbon mechanism invention is particularly adapted, is typewriting machine of the folding type wherein side bars 1 and 2 are pivoted to main machine frame. 3 by means stud bolts 5 and 6. The carriage frame is provided with endfraines' 16 and 17, in which is mount-eel .a cylindrical platen 18, and the usual line spacing mechanism 19. A series of key levers i0, Qland 2-3 are mounted in the machine frame upon key lever supporting rods 2 1-, 253 and 2G, and are connected at their rear ends by means of links 2?, with type bars 28, the type bars 2 being supported by means of hangers 29, attached to the r walls of the main fame in a manner known in the art. The key leversjii ii a '22 are provided with coiled. springs 3Q 31 and 35-2 respectively, which are connected with a portion oi a type barrestrE-i; in such manner as toreturn the key levers to normal position when a type bar hasbeen octaated. The coiled springs 30,; 81 and protected by a front board I which is attached to the machine frame by means of screws 35, and extends above the key levers frdm the right to the left wall of the typewriting machine frame. The front of the machine frame is supported upon ,a cross bar 37, which is provided with rubber feet 38. The cross bar 37 performs the double function of providing means for stifi'ening the front of the machine frame, and also providing a sufficient width of surface upon which to attach the rubber feet 38. At the rear corners of the machine frame, plates 39 and 40 are provided, in a manner similar to the cross bar 37, and form a brac ing for the corners of the machine frame and also provide 5 suilicient supporting sur face for mounting the rubber feet ll and 49-, upon which the rear of the machine is sup ported. A space bar 44, is mounted, imme diately in front of the letter keys on the key board, upon rearward extensions 45, which are bifurcated at 46, in such manner as to guide a universal bar 47, which is constriicted of a suflicient length to cover all of the ends of the key levers, as is shown particularly in Fig. 3. It is desirable that the universal bar be some little distance above the key levers that are connected with the type bars, for the reason that upon depressing a key lever the only force necessary to be exerted is a. weight sullicient to start the type bar in its upward movement toward the printing point, and the type bar ivill'l iavfgained considerable momentum before the -key lever contacts with the universal barv that the mechanisms, hereinafter to be described, whichfare operated by the universal bar, are not brought into operation until a certain amount of energy has been stored in the bar mechanism becausoof the momentum ot' the moving type bar, and thus less actual weight will be required to operate the universal bar and attendant mecha nisms than if the universal bar were placed immediately upon the ends of the key levers. T he coiled springs 116 are of a suiiicient strength to substantially counterbalance the weight of the carriage and attendin mechanisms which are shifted when the shift mechanism is operator. Upwardly extending shift links 118 and 119, are carried bythe outer ends of the platen shift bell cranks upon the transverse rod 61 which rod also carries the vertical lever links 61 and The upwardly extending shift links 118 and 119, are each provided with a slot 12-1, through which are adapted to extend T-shaped 1 headed stud blocks 120 and 121,'which form guiding pivots to direct the motion of the l upwardly extending shift links 118 and 119 when they are shifted in the platen shifting operation. The upper ends of the shift links 118 ind 119 are bifurcated and c0- operate with pin studs 122, which are fixedly mounted in the side bars 1 and 2 respectively The shift link 119 is provided on its upper end with a la ch member 125. which prevents the side bars, carriage mechanism, ribbon mechanism, etc., from being accidentally folded when the machine is care lessly lifted and turned upside down. The front edge of the shift link 119 is bent over to form a stop which stop is adapted to cooperate with either of the adjustable stop screws 111 and 112, depending upon which scrc .\.,is po tinned in the path of the stop. The cam face 111 on the cam actuated stop member 10 is maintained in engagement with the pm on the key level- 100. by ineansof .leaf spring 127,'rfhich bears upon the rear face of the cam actuated stop 4 member, and is attached at its other end to the rear'wall of the machine frame.
