Be it known that I, MAX A. BERGWARDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful .Improvement in Picot-,Edging Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
rlhis invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be employed in conjunction with hemstitching machines.
My invention has for its object primarlly to provide a device, or attachment designed to be applied to a hemstitching machine whereby a form of trimming for womens garments commonly known as picot edging may be produced without requiring anyV handwerk as isincident to methods ordinarily in use, and which is of a form so that the requirement for detaching the device from the machine whennot employed may be obviated. rllhe invention consists essentially of a cutter preferably in the form of apair of scissors which is adapted to be applied to a hemstitching machine so as to I be operated for separating the connected 4stitches of the hemstitching when the machine is operated, and connecting the cutter with the piercer bar `of the machineis -a form of mechanism whereby the cutter will be operated simultaneously with the operationof the piercer for making hemstitch holes.

Projecting upwardly fromthe plate 11 so as to be spaced from the presser-foot bar 13 is an arm 27 having .a bifurcated upper end to provide a vertically disposed slot, as 28, vand in the bifurcated parts of this arm are registered threaded openings through which va screw l29 ispassed, while in the upper free end of the arm 2 7 is another threaded opening in which is a set-screw SO-adapted to be rotated into engagement with the screw 29 for locking this screw 29 against movement. Extending angularly in a lateral direction from the upper part of the arm 27 of the bracket 10 is a finger 31 with a hole 32 therethrough, and -projecting downwardly from the underside of the plate 11 of the supporting bracket is an extension 34 of the shape ofsubstantially an inverted U to provide a vertically 'disposed circular slot 35'between the arms of the extension, and through ing with the upper end of the slot.
.first hemstitched by operating the machine for-Working the needles 18 yand 19 with thev piercers 24 and 25 'in the usual manner and heretofore ithas been the custom to separate by handwork the stitches connecting' the hemstitching. In order to sever these connecting stitches by the use of my device simultaneously with the accomplishment of ythe hemstitching, an adjustable cutter, as
39, is provided. The cutter39 is preferably in the form 0i a pair of scissors having two blades, as 40 and 41, which are adjustably arranged between the `fingers 37 and 3S of the slotted extension 34 of the supporting bracket 10, and the central parts of the blades of the scissors are pivoted, at 42, to the finger of the supporting bracket. The cutter, or scissors 39 are arranged so that the bladesv 40 and 41 will be moved relatively to each other in upwardly and downwardly directions, and the forward parts of the blades are of lengths to extend into the space between the toes of the presser-foot 14 or' the machine contiguous to the piercer 24, while the opposed edges 'of the blades are sharpened to a keen cutting edge, as at 43 and 44. The opposite parts of the blades are of lengths to extend some distance rearwardly of the supporting bracket 10 of the device, and these ends of thecblades may be curved upwardly, as at 45 and 46, respectively. In the curved end 45 of the blade 40 of the scissors is a' hole in which is held thelower end of a spiral spring- 48 having its other end held in the opening 32 of the finger 31 of the slotted arm 27 of the bracket 10. and this spring normally serves to force the cutting end or' the blade 4() downwardly between the toes of the presser-.foot by forcing the rear end of this blade in an upward direction.
The cutter 39 is operable in unison with the operation of the needles 18, 19 and with the piercers 24 and 25 when the machine is operated, and to accomplish this, a mechanism, as 49, is provided. The mechanism 49 may bein the form of an adjustable counection composed of two extensible members 50 and 51. The member 50 has a link, or bar 52 with its lower end pivoted, at 53, te the curved, end 46 of the blade 41 of the cutter, or scissors 39, and this link has ay set screw 54 threaded in an openingfin its upper end. The screw 54 passes through a slot 55 provided in the lower part of a second link, or bar 56 of the member 50 to allow the links to be extensibly adjusted for lengthening or shortening this member. To adjust the cutter, or' scissors 39 relativelyl to the presser-foot 14 of the machine for properly separating the connecting stitches of the hemstitching in the slot 35 o1u the extension 34'- oi the supporting bracket is a movable block 68, Figs'. 14, 16,17, and in the threaded opening 36 .of the plate 11 of the supporting` bracket is a linger screw, as 69, adapted to be rotatably 3c moved into contact with the upper end of the block so as to be forced downwardly in the slot against the upper edge of the rearpart of the blade 41 'of the cutter, or
scissors against the tension ot' the spring 48. illhis blade of the scissors may thereby be accurately positioned in the path of the connecting stitches of the hemsttchng while the material is being hemstitched for separating the connecting stitches, and by accordingly adjusting the extensible links 50 and 51 ofthe mechanism 49 the blade 40 'of ythe scissors may be suitably `.adjusted with relation to the blade 40 for causing the scissors to properly operate.
When the machine is operated to produce hemstitching of material in the usual manner, and when the piercer bracket 23 is reciprocated by the reciprocation of the bar 22 fof the piercer 24, the `linkl 51 of the mechanism 49 will be rocked to impart upward and downward movements tothe blade.

In the foregoing description, ll 'have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modiications may be made therein kwithout de parting from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the `scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent i 1. In a picot edging attachment, the com bination with a supporting bracket opera to be appliedto the presser-foot bar of a hemstitching machine having a reciprocable piercer-bar, of a member formed of extensibly adjustable links one being pivoted to one of the blades' or' scissors, a rocking bar on the bracket, havin one of its ends pivoted to the second link of said member and having its other end pivoted to' the piercer-bar, and means connecting the sec-v ond blade of the scissors to the bracket for normally retaining in depressed position the cutting end of said second blade between the toes of the presser-:toot of the machine.
2. ln a picot edging attachment, the combination with a supporting bracket operatively carrying a pair of scissors, adapted to be removably applied to the presserefoot bar of a hemstitching machine havin a recifprocable piercer-bar, of a member ormed o extensibly adjustable links one being 105 pivoted to one oi the blades of the scissors a rocking bar on the bracket, having one of its ends pivoted to the second link of said member and having its other end pivoted to the piercerebar, means connecting the second blade of the scissors to the bracket for normally retaining in depressed position the cutting end of said second blade between the toes of the presser-foot of the machines, and means on the bracket, operable for al- 115 lowing the cutting endsfof the scissors to be adjustably raised and lowered between the toes of said presser-foot.
