ilNiTnD STATES PATENT @einen THOMAS F. HART, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
PRESSE R-FOOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part o1 Letters Patent No. 331,788, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed March 25, 1835.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs F. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Presser-Feet; and I do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specication and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in presser-feet for sewing-machines of the kind used for sewing seam-stays to boots and shoes,A and it is carried out as follows, references being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved presserfoot. Fig. 2 represents a plan view, seen from the top, with the yield ing spring shown as removed. Fig. 3 represents a bottom view of the invention, and Fig. 4 represents a cross-section on theline A B shown in Fig. l.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In presser-feet of the usual kind for this purpose there has been a downwardly-projecting rib made rigid in one piece with the lower horizontal part of the presser-foot, such rib being adapted to enter the hollow at the junction of the two'pieces of leather previously closed together so as to serve as a guide for sewing on the stay to the underside of the work and parallel to the center seam. Such rigid rib is, however, objectionable, for the reason that it is liable to tear the thread in the middle seam, and to avoid such difficulty I make the said rib as a separate part from the presser-foot and hinge it to the latter in such a manner that its lower edge is permitted to play in a slit made in the horizontal part ofthe presser-foot and held downward with a yielding pressure against the iniiuence of a suitable spring, and in this manner the said/rib is made to yield automatically to inequalities in the surface of the seam, as well as preventing the latter from being cut or injured by the downwardly-projecting rib. In connection with such vertically-yielding rib,
5o I have arranged a laterally-adj asta-ble needle- Serial No. l0,064. (No model.)
"1 guide, against the inclined side of which the needle is made to rest while inthe act of penetrating the material, and thus prevent oscillation or trembling of the needle, by which uneven work is produced.
In the drawings, c is the presserfoot of the usual form, and a. is the slit in its horizontal part, as described.
a a are ears secured to the piesseifoot c, as shown, to which ears is hinged the yielding arm b, the under side of which is made as a downwardly -projecting rib, b, that passes loosely through the slit a', as shown in Fig. 4E. The arm or lever Z) is held downward by means of a suitable spring, c, secured at its upper end to presserfoot a, and having its lower free end resting on top of lever b, as shown in Fig. l.
c3 is the perforation in the horizontal portion of the presser-foot, as usual, for the needle c4 to pass through, as shown in Fig. 4.
To one side of yielding lever b is secured at d the spring-bar d, having in its forward end, opposite to the needle-hole a3 and needle a4, the tapering projection d, against which the needle rests lightly while in the act of passing through the fabric, and thus serves as a guide for the needle to rest against, and thus prevent its oscillation or trembling, for the purpose set forth. For the purpose of adjusting said projection "in a lateral direction toward tional resistance, I employ a small set-screw, d3, screwed through the rear side of yielding bar b, and having its pointed end preferably resting in a countersink or recess on the back of spring-bar d or the projection d, as shown in Fig. 2.
The under side of the presser-foot a may be concave or dat, as may be desired.
Having thus fully described the nature and construction of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- 1. The slitted presser-foot a a and its hinged yielding bar b and guiderib b, in combination with the laterally adjustable needle-guide d d", as and for the purpose set `forth.
2. In a presser-foot, the vertically-yielding the needle, so as to obtain the proper fricguide-rib b', in combination with the laterico ally-adjustable needle-guide d, as and for the toward the neeille, as and for the purpose set purpose'set forth. forth. A 1o 3. In combination, the presser-foot a, its In testimony whereofhave afxed my sigslit a, the hinged yielding lever I), and its rib nature in presence of two Witnesses.
5 b, the spring c, and springbar d, secured in THOMAS F. HART.
