UNDERFRAME CONSTRUCTION FOR RAILWAY-CARS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AN'roN BECKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underframe Constructions for Railway-Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in underfraine construction for railway cars, and more particularly to the connections of the transverse beams with the center girder members,-one object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means where by the underframe members may be readily assembled in proper alinement and effectually secured and supported.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a car underframe embodyingmy improvements; Fig. :2 is a view partly in plan and partly in section of a portion of the underframe; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of one of the brackets 8.
1, 1 represents the center girder members forming, with acover plate 2 secured to said members by means of angle beams 2 a box girder. The respective center girder mem here are provided with openings to permit the passage of continuous transverse beams which, inthe present instance, are preferably made in the form of I-beams 8. Each transverse beam or member 3 is secured at its respective ends to the side sills 4 of the underframe by means of angle brackets 5,the latter being securely riveted to the side sills and to the transverse beams and formed with pockets 6 to receive the upper flanges of the latter,the lower flanges of the transverse beams being cut away at the ends of each beam and the outer ends of the latter being disposed between the flanges of the side sills, as shown in Fig. 1.

A flanged bracket 8, preferably of pressed steel, is located at the juncture of each transverse beam with the respective center girder members. Each connecting bracket 8 comprises a web portion 9, a vertical flange 10 and upper and lower flanges l1-l2,each of which latter are made with depressed portions 13 for the accommodation of the flanges of the transverse I-beam.
Connecting brackets, such as above described are located, at respective sides of each transverse I-beam at the juncture of the latter with the center girder members, as shown in Fig. 3,the web portions of said brackets lying against the web portion of the l-beam and securely riveted thereto as shown in Fig. 1. The vertical flanges of the connecting brackets are riveted to the center girder members as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 and the lower flanges 12 of said brackets rest upon and are riveted to the supporting angle bars 7.
With my improvements, the lining-up of the transverse beams is greatly facilitated. The supporting angle bars 7 may first be secured in place and in accurate alinement on the center girder members. The transverse beams may then be passed through the center girder members and supported upon said angle bars,-after which the pressed connecting brackets may be placed in position and riveted to the transverse beams and the center girder members as previously eX- plained. Thus it will be seen that eflicient means are provided for positively supporting the transverse beams while the connecting brackets are being secured in place, and the accurate assembling of the underframe is greatly facilitated.
