Be 4it known .that I, ANTON BECKER, of
' Columbus, in the county'ofV Franklin `.and
AState of Ohio, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements ingUnderframes for Cars and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
My invention relatesto, improvements in underframes for cars and-more particularly an underframe ada table fornse in the construction ofsuch our-Wheeled vehicles vas cabooses,-the object of the invention being to so construct the underframe that it will be A supported upon the pedestalsj'over the car es, and4 so that side-,sills of ordinary depthA can be employed and made 'to cooperate With the smallerl furring strip to sup' port the car'ooring.
l. With this object in 'view the invention consists in certain novel featuresA of construe# vtion and combinations of 'parts as "herein- .after set for-th and pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawin s, Figure 1 isa transverse sectional view i nsti-ating a car. underframe embodying my improvel ments. Fig. 2 is' a partial longitudinal section showing the relation of an end-sill and platform to the center girder, and Fig. 3 is a vsectional view on'the line x-x of Fig. 2.
' Icross-section,
ported upon the' pedestalsa l4o 1 represents a center-girder comprising twd channeled members and is supported through the medium Vof cross-beams 2 upon angle beams, preferably havggg Z-shape in ,uch `Zbearnsibeing located adjacent to the sides of theframe and. supover the'journal-boxes of the car. 1
Each` cross-beam 2 comprises two inem? bers, each consisting of a channel-iron se` I cured at itsinner endgto one member of the eted thereto.
. beam member center girder by means of an angle-plate 4, or if desired the inner end of each cross-beam lmember may be provided with a flange to lie againsta center' beam member and be riv- 'lhe outer end of each crossof the Z-beams, rests thereupon and is secured thereto by 'means of 4bolts or rivets. A top compression late or strap 5 extends across the center sil and 'is secui'ed to the upper flanged edges of the respective mem-V bers of the cross-beams. A-y lower com` projects laterally beyond'onr y I pression late passes through slots inthe center sil members and is secured at its ends to the lower flanges of the cross-beam members-these compressionplates assisting in insuring the rigidity of the connection of the cross-beam members with the center girder.
In the ordinary construction of cars, in which wooden side sills are em iloyed, such sills are made of greater de th t an the furring strips but their upper aces are m'ade to aline with the upper faces of the furring strips for the accommodation of the car flooring(v In the present instance, f urring strips 7 are located upon the cross-beams andl for theyaccommodation of the thicker or deelilcr side sills 8, I provide brackets 9. Eae of these brackets comprises two angleirons secured at respective sides of each crossbeam member at the end of the latter and in roximity to the lower iianged edge thereof.
hese brackets project outwardly from the end of thecross-beam member and constitute a seat-for the side-sill as clearly shown in Fig. 1.y The end sills 10 (which also assist in supporting the floor) are made of greater depth orthickness that the furring strips, and for their accommodation the respective center girder members are notched, as at 11, and the flanged upper portions are bent outwardly -and downwardly to form depressed seatsv 12 upon which the en d sill rests.. Each 'end sill is also braced by means of a'n angleiron 1'3 secured to the side thereof and the center girder. The en d sills are also supportednear their ends by brackets 15 secured thereto and to the Z-bars 3. The center girder projects beyond the end-sills and supports the car platform 14.
The side Z-beams may be secured to the car pedestals in any suitable manner and various changes might be inade in other details of construction Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
By the angle-beams as used in the claims,y is meant beams having Webs, and flanges disposed substantially at right angles to the Webs.
H'aving fully described my invention what claim as new and desire to secure by 'Letters-Patent, is,- 'y
1. A car underfraiiie beams adapted to be supported u )on the car pedestals, a center girder, cross-beams supporting the center girder upon the side angleeams, and brackets projecting from the ends ioo j comprising angleof the cross-beams belo'W the upper face of the latter for supporting side-beams.
2. Acar underrame comprisingside angle beams adapted to be su portedu on the car pedestals, a center gir er,l crossearns supporting the center girder upon the side anglecams7 and depressed seats projeeting'lfrom the ends of the cross-beams for thereception of side-sills.
3. A car underframe com rising anglebeams adapted to be supported upon the car edestals, a center girder between said anglebeams, cross-beam members secured at their inner ends to the center girder, said crossbeam members resting upon and projecting laterally beyond the angle-beam's, and angleirons secured to the, outer ends of the crossbeam members below the upper faces of the latter, said angle-irons projecting outwardly beyond the ends ofthe cross-beam members and constituting seats fortlie side-sills of the car.
4. The combination with a center sill adapted at its ends to support car platforms and provided with notches and depressed seats adjacent to said platforms, of end sills resting upon said depressed seats and passing through said notches, cross-beams secured to the center girder, depressed seats at the ends of said cross-beams, and side-sills resting upon said last mentioned depressed seats.
5.l The combination with a center girdcr i provided near its ends with notches and integral laterally projeetin seats at the bases 0f said notches, Aof end sil s resting upon said seats, cross beams secured to the center irder, depressed seats projecting outwardly rom the ends of the cross-beams, side-sills mounted upon said depressed seats, and means for supportin the transverse beams upon the car pedesta s.
`6. The combination with a center girder provided near its ends with recesses and depressed seats at the bases of said recesses, of endsills passing through said recesses and resting upon said depressed seats, angleirons secured to said end sills and to the center grder, crossebeam members secured to the center girder and adapted to support the side-sills of the car, and means for supporting:r said cross-beams upon the car pedestals.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subseribing:r witnesses.
a ANTON BECKER.
