To all whom z' may concern Be it known that I, ANTON BECKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Underframes; and l do hereby declare the following to be av full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to male and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in car underframes and more particularly to the center and draft sill constructions,-one object of the invention being to provide a center sill structure which shall be especially useful for the purpose of reinforcing wooden cars and to so construct and arrange the sameJ as to be readily applicable to wooden cars from underneath the same without disturbing or displacing the wooden sills which extend from one bolster to the other.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a plan view showing a portion of a car underframe embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a view in section of a portion of a car showing my improvements in side elevation; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the center girder members; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the angle bars 11; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the angle beams 10; Fig. S is a perspective view, partly in section, of a portion of one of the draft sills; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the gussets 15; Fig. 10 is a perspective view of one of the stops l2, and Fig. 11 is a view of a modification.
1, 1, 2, 2 represent the wooden sills or stringers of a car underframing.
Between the central wooden sills or stringers 2, 2, Z-beam center girder members 3, 3 are located. A channel beam 4 is disposed upon and securely riveted to the upper, inwardly projecting flanges '5 of the Z-beams, said channel beam thus spanning the Z- Specication of Letters Patent.

beams and having its respective upwardly projecting flanges resting against the inner faces of the wooden sills or stringers 2, 2. The lower flanges 6 ofthe Z-beams are disposed under and support the wooden sills or stringers 2.
The Z-beams 3 extend from bolster to bolster,-one of said holsters, 7 being indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The ends of the beams 3 extend over the bolster to facilitate the connection therewith of draft sills S, but as the Zbeams depend below the plane of the top of the bolster, it is necessary that the plane of the bottoms of the beams 3 shall be somewhat higher where said beams pass over the bolster than is the plane of the bottoms of these beams between the bolsters. Such elevating of the plane of the bottom of the ends of the Z-beams may be accomplished by removing the portions of the bottom flanges 6 as indicated at 9, Fig. 2, or if desired, the same result may be obtained by slotting the end portions of the Z- beams and then pressing the parts together, as shown in Fig. 11. l prefer however, to remove portions of the bottom flanges 6, and when this is done, the Z-beams will be reinforced by means of angle beams 10 which are secured to the lower portions of the Z- beams and to the draft sills 8, as shown in Fig. 2, and the lower inwardly projecting iianges of the angle beams 10 are securely riveted to angle bars 11 secured to the lower portions of the draft sills 8, as shown in Fig. 3.
To each draft sill S, an angle bar 12 is secured to form an abutment for the end of the adjacent wooden center sill 2. That portion of each wooden center sill which extends from the bolster to the end of the underframe is offset laterally as indicated at 13, and those portions of the draft sills 8 which extend beyond the ends of the Z-beam center sills 3 are also offset laterally as shown at 14 for the accommodation of the draft gear. Thus it will be seen that the draft sills are spaced farther apart at their forward ends, than at their rear ends where they are secured to the respective Z-beams. Each offset wooden center sill 13 is bolted at its rear end to a gusset plate 15 as indicated at 16a, said gusset being secured upon the bolster 7 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and extending to the adjacent draft sill, where it is provided with a flange 16 secured to said draft sill and to the center girder member.
The draft sills are preferably made in the form of channels and to their upper anges, a cover plate 17 is secured and provided at its forward end with an upturned flange 18 to form a stop for the end sill 19, and to which latter, it may be bolted.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Leth ters-Patent, is z- 1. In a car underframe, the combination with a car bolster, of Z-beam center girder members having flanged portions below the plane of the top of the bolster and having their end portions disposed approximately in the plane of the top of the bolster' and extending over the latter'.
2. In a car underframe, the combination with a car bolster, of Z-beam center girder members having their lower flanged edges depending below the plane of the top of the bolster', the lower flanged edges at the ends of the Z-beams being removed and these end portions of the Z-beams extending over the bolster.
3. In a car underframe, the combination with a bolster, of Z-beam center girder members having the lower flanges removed at the ends thereof, said end portions extending over the bolster, and angle beams secured to the webs of the Z-beams and reinforcing the end portions of the latter.
4L. In a car underframe, the combination with a bolster, of Z-beam center girder members having their end portions extending over the bolster, draft sills secured to said center girder members, angle beams secured to the webs of the Z-beams and the draft sills, and angle beams secured to the webs of the draft sills and to said angle beams.
5. In a car underframe, the combination with a bolster and wooden center sills terminating at the bolster, metal center girder members projecting over the bolster, draft sills secured t0 the projecting portions of the center girder members, stops secured to said draft sills to receive the wooden center sills, laterally offset wooden center sills extending beyond the bolster, gnssets secured to the bolster and to the draft sills, and means securing said offset wooden center sill to said gussets.
