To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States', residing at Momence, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain` useful Improvements in Shears-Supports, of which the following is va specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

The present invention relates to supports, and has particular reference to an improved device for supporting shears and other tools used by workmen, and which are adapted to be carried for convenient grasping.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a comparatively simple, light and foldable support peculiarly adapted toreceive a air of shears and hold them in 3osit P tion for vready grasping, and within easy reach of the workman.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a `support ofthis character provided with a supporting frame or ring having an open side which is closed by a movable finger and against which the shears may be pressed and forced into the ring for engaging the shears with the support without the necessity of guiding the points of the shears into the supporting frame or rin g.

The above and other objects and advantages of this invention will `be more fully brought out in the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is afface View ofthe device secured to a garment andsupporting a pair of' shears. t

Referring to this drawing, 10 designates an attachingfplate whichis provided at its against theback thereof and being bent upwardly to provide "a substantially U-shaped Fig. 5is a perspective detail" of thewedge pocket 12 for a' purpose which will hereinafter appear. `The bottom, or lower end of the -plate 10is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 13 through which projects the shank 14 of a slide 15. The lower end of theslide 15 is overturned inwardly and is thence bent upon itself to provide a' down` wardly extending tongue 16 having a pocket 17 formed at its inner end. The pocket 12 opens upwardly and the pocket 17 opens downwardly.

A thumb nut 18 is threaded upon the stem 14 and binds against the outer face of the plate 10 to secure the slide 15 in adjusted position. The slide 15 is also provided with a longitudinal slot 19 in its upper end through which projects a guiding pin 20, the latter being carried upon the plate 10 and cooperating with the stud 14 to hold the tongue l? from swinging upon the lower end of the p ate. j

The plate 10'is provided intermediate its ends with a suspension frame 21 whichmay be of any desired configuration, the frame in the present instance being shown as of rec`` tangular form and being connected by a hinge 22 at one of its long sides to the outer face of the plate 10. The hinge 22 may have a leaf portion 23` projecting through a `slot formed in the middle of the plate 10 and which is secured against the rear side of the plate 10. The frame 21 is yieldingly held in outwardly swung position at right angles to the plate 10, and flat against the outer face of the plate 10, by a spring 24 which is secured to `thelower end of the plate 10 and extends upwardly andisofset outwardlyat its upper end to provide a supporting shoulder A25 against which the lower bar of the frame seats when the frame yis swung outwardly. `The offset portion of the spring 24 engages over the inner bar of the frame` and yieldinglyv holds the frame in adjusted position. j One side of the frame 21 f is preferably openor discontinued. The open side is nor-` mally closed by a finger 26 which is pivoted` as at 27 to the outer side bar of the frame. A spring28 isV carried' in .the frame 21 and has one end bearingagainst the innerside of the linger 26 to normally urge it outwardly andagainst a shoulder 29formed` `on the inner side of the frame. The finger 26 theref fore normally closes the frame, and may be urged inwardly byy pressing the shearsk or otherv article against the outer side of the finger.

This` guider 31 prevents the blades of the shearsfroin striking against the shoulder 29 or the adjacenty end of ther` inner bar of the frame. i

As. shown in the. present instance, the guide 31 is in the form of al single piece of sheet metal which is suitably cut and stamped to provide the inclined facel and y a, plurality oftongues 32'byv means of which the guidemay bel secured to the plate lO. The. thumb vscrew. 18 isnow tightened, and the. slide` ,is held Asecurely against .the plate l0. The tongues 11 and 16 now firmly hold 65 the attaching plate 10 to the garment.

If a pair of shears is being used and it is desired to momentarily place the same at rest or to free the hands thereof, it is only necessary to swing the shears downwardly and engage the same against the open side or fingerv 26 of the frame, the finger 26 swinging inwardly and permitting the shears to enter the suspension frame. The shears may now be released when the same will fall through the suspension frame until the handles enga-ge the frame to thus support the shears The shears may be readily withdrawn by raisingl the same out of the frame. Thefinger 26 is preferably located at the outer side of the framel when the latter is applied to the garment, as shown in Fig.. 1.

It is of course understood that various changes. and modifications may be made in this construction without departing from the spirit of thel invention, such, changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
