Toall whom it may concern: .Be it known that LARLo B. Harms, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Eldorayinthe county of Hardin and State ofzIowa, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
v This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gates, andmore-particularly to farm gates, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a swinging gate with means whereby the same may be lifted a short distance so'as to clear snow, or for various other purposes which are Obvious. 1 i
. Another object of the invention isto provide a device of this character,which is j easily and simply constructed, inexpensive 0 manufacture, and one which will be very eflicient in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my. invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly ,pointed out in the specification and claims. i
In the accompanying drawings :5 Figure 1 is a side elevationof the gate; and i i Fig. 32 is a detail perspective view of the lifting means detached. i i In describing my invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters will designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. 1 The invention isadaptedto be applied to the conventional type of gate 1 that is of substantially rectangular shape, being formed with horizontally extending rails, having their opposite ends, at intermediate portions connected by brace bars 2, as is common to farm gates of this character. The gate is normally positioned between a hinge post 3, and a latch post 41, the rear end of said gate being connected to the hinge post by slid able and swinging connections to be hereinafter more fully described.
This connection comprises a pair of U- shaped supports 4:, which have their end portions positioned through said post, and their connected ends being spaced from one side of the post. These connected ends are disposed in substantially vertical alinement, and the same are adapted to receive between their inner sides and the post rollers 5 that are mounted on strap members 6 secured to the end bars 2 of the gate 1. This allows the gate to be hingedly and slidably mounted between the posts. The forward end of the gate 1 is provided with the conventional type of sliding latches 7, that are adapted to project forwardlyinto keepers 8 in the latch post 4 when the gate is in closed position.
Pivotally connected to one of the horizontally extending rails of the gate 1, is a bell crank lever 9.having one of its arms projecting laterally from the end bar of the gate, and hinged intermediate its ends as shown at 10, said projecting portion having a lateral off-set 11 at the free end thereof that is adapted to be pivotally mounted in a socket formed in the gate postS. The other arm ofthe lever 9 has a knuckle 12 formed thereon that projects from opposite sides of the gate for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described. An operating lever 13 is pivotally mounted adjacent the front end ofthe gate 1. Said lever 13 is formed of two vertically positioned bars 14 and 15, that are positioned on oppositesides of the gate, and are pivotally connected with one of the rails 2 adjacent their lower ends as shown at 16. The bars ltand 15 are connected at their upper ends, one of said bars projecting upwardly as shown at 17 and being bent laterally to form a handle, whereby the said bars may be; operated simultaneously.
A pair of parallel links 18 disposed on opposite sides of the gate 1 connect the free end of the bell crank lever 9, with the bars 14: and 15. These; links extend along the gate 1, and where they are connected with the lower ends of the bars 14 and 15 is also connected a diagonally extending guideand brace bar 19 that extends across the gate 1, and above the same as shown at 20, the free end thereof being held in said position by upright standards 21 secured on the gate at the rear end thereof. To prevent sagging the gate 1 is provided with a supplemental diagonally extending rod 22 Which forms a brace for the same. To operate the latches 7 simultaneously with the operation of the lever 13, there is provided a supple mental pivoted lever 23 that is mounted on one side of the gate 1 adjacent the forward end thereof, and is connected by a link at 24 that extends upwardly and is pivotally attached to the bar 14. The lower end of the lever 23 is connected with the rear end of the lower sliding latch 7. The upper sliding latch 7 is connected with the bar 15,
above the link 24, and by this connection it is obvious that when the operating lever 13 is swung rearwardly, the upper and lower sliding latches will be retracted from the keepers 8, so'as to allow the gate to lift as the same is disconnected from the latch post 4.
From the foregoing description the operation of this gate is easily understood. Owing to the connection 'of the said gate with the gate post 3, the gate may be swung in the conventional manner, and when it is desired to raise said gate, the operating lever 13is grasped by the projecting upper end thereof which may if desired be connected with a cable which is run to any suitable place so as to facilitate the operation thereof, and the bars are movedrearwardly, thereupon the links 18 will move forwardly and as the said links are connected with the bell crank lever 9, and as the opposite end of the said lever is engaged with the stationary post 3, it is obviousthat the gate 1 will be liftedthereby. 1 The slidable hinge connection between the gate post permits a limited lifting movement of the gate. The brace bar 19 with the projecting portion 20 operates as a primary brace which with the diagonal brace bar 22 prevents the'gate from sagging during operation thereof.
It is obvious that movement ofthe lever 13 will release the latches 7 from the latch post 4, and permit this sliding movement of the gate. This limited vertical sliding movement of swinging gates is very useful in farm gates, which allows the gate to be swung when lifted to operate when there is a heavy snow fall on the ground. The gate is also adapted to be lifted slightly to allow small animals to pass therethrough, but still retain the larger animals and prevent their escaping.
From the above description taken in con motion with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown the device Copies; of this vpatent may be obtained for as embodying a specific structure, I desire to have it understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A swinging gate of the class described including a gate hingedly and slidably connected with a gate post, a bell crank lever pivoted on the gate adjacent the post and pivotally connected therewith, a pair of vertically positioned bars pivoted on opposite sides of the gate adjacent the front end, said bars having their upper ends connected and forming a handle projecting above the gate, parallel links on opposite sides of the gate connecting said bars with the bell crank lever, and diagonal extending rods carried by the gate and having their lower ends connected with the joints of the operating bars and links. 4
2. A swinging gate of-the class described including a gate hingedly and slidably connected with a gate post, a bell crank lever pivoted on the gate adjacent the hinged end thereof, one arm of said lever projecting from the end of the gate, and the other extending downwardly substantially parallel therewith, the projecting arm of said lever beingpivotally connected with the gate post so as to allow the gate to swing in a vertical and horizontal plane, a vertically disposed operating lever hingedly mounted on the gate adjacent the forward end thereof, a link connecting the lower end of said operating lever with the extremity of the downwardly projecting arm of the bell crank lever, latches carried by the gate and adapted for engagement with a latch post, and means connecting the operating lever and the latches for retracting said latches upon operation of the lever.
