Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
JOSEPH S. NOYES, OF RANSOM CENTER, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND FRANKLIN O. HILL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,883, dated June 24, 18:9; application filed December 31, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH SAMUEL NOYES spondin g parts.
A and B are the main posts. 0 is the hinged or supporting post, which is hinged to post A and supports the gate D. E is the main upright of the gate. Two clasps or yokes, F and G, hold the gate to the post 0, as shown in the drawing, and move loosely thereon, F being pivoted at a, while G is bolted fast to the upright E.
H is the arm of a lever, to one end of which two bent arms, I I, are firmly attached, that pass on either side of the upright E, and are pivoted thereon at b. These arms I I are connected with yoke F by links K K, as shown in the drawing.
The handle L of the gate, pivoted at 0, carries two latches, d d, which keep the gate closed by being thrust into groove M of the post B. The pins f f prevent the latches from being lifted out of the groove. They can be Withdrawn only by the backward swinging of the handle L.
Wishing to raise the gate, one takes hold of it with both hands at about g g, and lifts straight up, when it will remain at the height to which it is lifted if the lever-handle H be brought down and secured.
To lower the gate, it is necessary to take hold at about h with one hand and the leverhandle with the other, and simultaneously to raise the lever-handle, thus loosening the lock made by the weight of the gate operating on the arms I I, links K K, and yoke F, and pull down on the gate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The yokes F G, the former pivoted and the latter firmly secured to the rearupright of the gate, in combination with the gate D and the hinged post 0, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The yokes F G, the links K, the bent arms I, and the lever-handle H, in combination with the gate D and the hinged post 0, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The gate-handle L, consisting of two bars pivoted at c to the top horizontal rail of the gate D, and provided with the latches d d,
pivoted between the bars of the handle and 1 held in position by the gravity of the said handle, substantially as described.
JOSEPH SAMUEL N O'YES. Witnesses:
