Description
. ,TINTTIETD erarae rarawr oi r iba KNUTE EMIL E. LJUNGSTROM, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OI COLUMBIA.
BEARD-SOFTENER.
recipes.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,. KNUTE EMIL lE. LJUNesTRoM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Beard-Softeners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in beard softening and massaging devices, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a device by means of which the beard may be softened with the application of a softening liquid, such as water, or other suitable fiuld. A further object of my invention is to provide a device which may be passed over the face, and which will deliver the softening liquid to the face during such passage the How of the liquid being automatically controlled by the pressure on the face.
A further object of my inyention is to provide a device which will hold a considerable quantity of the softening liquid, but
from which the liquid is not liable to run out until brought into operative position on the face of the user of the device.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming part of this ap plication, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the device, certain parts being shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a sect-ion on the line 2-2 of !Fig. 1;-
Fig. 3 is a section similar to Fig. 2, but showing the roller being pressed against the face of the user; and,
Fig. 4 is a section through a modified form of the device.
In carrying out my invention I provide a twisted wire shank 1,which enters a handle 2, preferably made of wood. One branch wire 3 extends laterally, and is bent at its end, the other wire 4 being similarly bent in the opposite direction.
At 5 I have shown a roller which is made of some resilient material such as rubber. This roller is provided with a series of perforations 6, these perforations being adja- Specification of Letters Patent.
cent to lips 7, which are arranged in pairs,
the members of each pair being normally inbearing for the roller at each end thereof,
the central portion of the bearings being coincident with.the axis of the roller.
The liquid 11 is introduced into the interior of the roller by removing the plug 10. This liquid may be water or any other suitable softening liquid. The plug 10 is screwed in place and the roller may be rolled over the face in a manner shown in Fig. 3. The pressure of the resilient roller 5 against the face distorts the roller and causes the lips 7 to spread apart, thereby permitting the liquid on the inside of the roller to flow out throughvthe perforations 6. The showing in Fig. 3 is exaggerated for purposes of illustration.- As soon as pres- Patented Apr. 3U, THIS." Application filed April 19, 1817. Serial No. 163,199.
sure is withdrawn from'the roller, the lips 7 are brought together by their natural resiliency and close over perforations, thereby cutting off the flow of the liquid.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modified form in which the perforations 6' arewedgeshaped in form. At the inner surface of the ,.roller the perforations are normally closed by the contacting edges of the walls spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim: 1. A beard softening device comprising a hollow resilient cylinder having normally closed elongated perforations in its periphe'ral wall, and being provided on its inner side with lips adjacent to the perforations and arranged to contact with one another,
said cylinder-being adapted to be bent by ricd by the wall of the cylinder on the in- 10 pressure against the face of the user, whercside thereof adjacent to each perforation, by the lips are forced apart. said lips being normally in contacting po- 2. A beard softenin device comprising a sition and being moved by the vpressure of hollow resilient cylin er adapted to contain the cylinder against the face of the user to a softenin liquld and having normally permit the passage of the softening fluid 15 closed per oratlons, each of said perforabetween the lips and through the perforations extending longitudinally on the cyltions. inder a pair of opposed integral lips car- KNUTE EMIL E.
