Description
ARcALoUs wxcxorn, or COLUMBUS, OHIO.
cHAIN PUMP.
` y `speeinee'ien ef Letters Patent No. 12,645, dated April s, 1855.
i To aZZ inkom t may cmicern:
Be it known tht I, ARoALoUs `lllroxorr,
. of Columbus, "in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have.` invented a Vnev7 and `usefulImprovement in Endless-Chain i Pumps;` and I dohereby declare that the ollowingis a full, clear, `and exact description of the same, referencebeing had to the `accompanying drawing, forming "part of this specication, inI which- Figure 1,; is a vertical Vcentral section of an endless chain pump with` my improvenents. Fig.x2, .is a horizontal section in the fline m, in Fig. 1.- Fig. ,`is a plan of `one of the buckets or elevators. Fig. 4, is a plan of a valve somewhat `different` from the one y shown in Fig. 2.1
` `within the cy-linderata point just abovethel Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
This `invention relates` to a method 'of rendering the .pump capable of retaining its water abovethe level .ofthe water in the well in case the motion ofthe chain is suddenly stopped. i r z r x y .y
The nature of `the improvement consists in `providing Van elastic or` other valve level of the waterin .the well, said valve i `denly stopped.
being constructed and arranged in a manner kto allow of the reepassage of the elevators upward r but to I"prevent all possibility of theirreturn back "withuthe water into the Wellin case the motion of the chain sud- To enable others skilled `the art to make `and use my invention I will proceed toidei.; ,B, the discharge ofthe same; l 40 scribe its construction and operation.
A, A, A2, represent the pump cylinder,
C, the endless chain; D, thechain wheel.
E, is the elastic and E',
confining the valve inits place. r i,
`The cylinderA, Af, has a` bore ofthe same diameter fromtop toI bottom excepting from the point b to o', where it is enlarged slightly owing to the bore ofthe ring II, which is inserted between these points, for confining the valve, being madeof about one half inch greater diameter thanthe bore of said cylinder so as `to allow Jforthe expansion of the valve.
E, .the metall disks of theelevatorsgF, the elastic valve; f. G,\`the seat of the valve and H,a ring for The valve F, may be divided in four parts and said partshung on hingesas in Fig.
4,*it may also be made elastic and provided vwith an annular hole c, and slitted radially as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 so `that it shall be capable of yielding and opening sufficiently to allow of the passage of the elevators through it. This valve owing to being arranged on the seat Gr, and the cylinder enlarged at d, b, is capable of opening upward, and as it thus opens is pressed against projection, d, and is prevented from open-Y ing to too great an extent, and as soon as the elevator escapes is caused in a measure by said projection d, to assume its seat again. The seat G, prevents the valve open-y ing downward and consequently all possibility of the elevators returning back into the well with the water is prevented.
When an elevator cornes in contact with this valve it causes the valve to expand and assume the position shown in dotted lines, the elevator then escapesy through the an-` nular opening c, and the valve closes after it, and in case the motion of the chain is suddenlyz `stopped the weight of the water `causes 4the elevator to again descend until it reaches the valve when its downward movement is arrested and all possibility of the water passing back into the well prevented.
By making the elevators with an elastic disk, E,"they are capable ofpassing more easily through the valve, and it is owing to their being `made convex that the discharge `of the water is facilitated.
Holes may be provided in the cylinder to `allow of "the water'running oit slowly in case it is not useful to retain it in the cylinder.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The application, of an elastic or other suitable valve to an endless chain pump cylinder, said valve being arranged so as-to be capable of only `opening upward, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
` i ARCALOUS WYCKOFF.
