- principle 'of the invention being herein ex-fplained and the best mode in which I'have.v contemplated applying that principle, so'as to distinguish it from other inventions.
'Ihe present improvements 'relate to welding torches of the so-called Oxy-.acetylene type, and still more especiallyto the construction of thetips of such torches. In this type of torch, as at present constructedl the tip-holder, which has a conical'plug at its inner end for making a gas and watertight joint with the appropriate connections in the body of the torch, is in efl'ect a unitary structure, being made up of a central portion with an outer shell that forms the water space for cooling, while the tip forms an integral extension'of such core. It accordinglvV is-not4 only inconvenient if not impossible, to clean the passages through such tip when they become clogged, but if it is, desired to change one tip for another, the entire holder structure has to be removed, involving in the replacement thereof, orin the substitution of another, the troublesome fitting togethenof the conical plug at the inner end `of, thev Structure with the complementary seat in the main body kportie-11 of the torch, so as to secure pro-per alinement of the various'passages, as well as a tight fit.
The object of the present invention is to provide a torch holder 'so constructed, that,
while it has the Same conical plug which may be Separated from the .seat in the torch body, if desired, it is nevertheless possible to eti-'ect the detaehmentof thetip, proper,
without disconnecting the'parts at the point just named, or disturbing 'the' connections Vthrough such joint. A further object is to insure adequate cooling of the tip holder close up to the tip, while yet another object is to provide means for'properly distributf. ing the gases to the Several apertures in the tip,.thereby insuring an equable heating effeet, as is quite essential where the tip is provided with a series of alined apertures designed to rovide an elongated flame. Application filed August 17, 1916. Serial No. 115,412.
the means hereinafter fully described and z particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, vbut -one of variousmechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed 'drawings- Figure 1 is a central axial cross section of the forward end of a torch body, showing attached thereto a tip and tip holder embodying my present improvements; Figs.2, 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views of the same, the planes of the sections being'indicated by the lines '2-2, 3-3 and 4 4, respectively, lFig. 1; Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the device as' viewed from the right in Fig. 1.; Fig. 6 is a central axial section of the tip by itself, the plane of the section being av right angles to that of Fig. l, is indi;
cated*l Iy line (ii-6 on said gure; and Fig. 7
is a perspective `of a baiiieor distribute-i" l member', that forms a feature 'of the device. l
As indicated, only the forward end of the body 1 ofthe torch is shown in the' drawing, such body being of more or less` familiar Jconstruction', the only part of particular interest in` thepresent connectionbeing the /cone-seat, or socket 2, wherewith the various ducts or ports '3, 4 and 5 that supply oxygen, acetylene and water, respectively to the tip holder, are suitably connected. These ducts, it will be understood, are all contained withinthe body of the torch, suitywith the )water supply. and exhaust ducts 5,
respectively.
Such'ihead is formed with ashoulder 16 on its forward face andthe opposite end of the core member is formedv wlth an enlargement 17 so'v that a tubular shell 18, when tightly fitted over Suchenlargement and against` such shoulder, provides two water circulating chambers 19, one on each side of the core'proper. Channels 20, oneon each side of such core at the forward end of these chambers, shown in Fig. 1, serve to connect the same and permit the waterto circulate in the fashion desired. r
Removably tted over the shell and adapted to bear lagainst the outer portion of the shoulder onthe core` head, is a sleeve 25 internally threaded at itsrilmer. end to engage f series of steps 33, asfshown in Figs. 1 and 6. Instead, however, of making such tip an ininternal threads in the"torch body and provided with a polygonal-portion 26 tov receive a wrench, or like tool. By means of such sleeve the core, once its head is properly located in the socket, may be firmly secured in place, as will be obvious.
The torch tip 30, proper, is in. general of familiar construction, being provided with a' chamber 31 from which extend a series of passagesv 32 that are of different lengths, the end of the tip being formed with a tegralpart of ithe core, as heretofore, I make the same a separate member, having its rear face fitted tightly against the front end of such core andprovided with an external chambers 19, I am enabled to carry the cooling liquid to the very extremity of the tip holder and somaintainl even the tip itself at a temperature below that at which it is 'likely to become. damaged by the heat.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention maybe employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, proshoulder 34 for the purpose presently to be' described. 4
' In the chamber 31 is removably held a member 35 in the form of a bar, having a diamond-like cross section, as shown in' Fig. 6,
suchbar being shown in perspective in Fig. -7. The gasesas they are discharged into the chamber through the central passage 12 in the core 10, strike --this bar, which divides.
' and deflects the stream so a's to equalize the pressure at all of the discharge orifices 32, and thus insure a steady and uniform flame across the entire stepped edge ofthe tip 30.
To secure the tip in place a flanged cap 36 is provided, being adapted to engage the shoulder 34: on the inner end of the tip and being internally threaded to engage external threads on the sleeve 25. It will be obvious I that by'means of this cap thetip may be firmly secured onto the end of the holder,
- v that is, against the end of the c ore member '.50
Ywith its surrounding shell, and yet if it be desired to remove the tip, either to clean the same, or .replace it with another, the connection between such holders inner end and the cone-socket in the main body of the torch needv not be disturbed. l
-The advantage in this construction overI the prevailing 'one is self-evident, and the same is true as to the function 'of the deflector member 35 in the chamber in the tip proper, which insures a uniform distribution Iof gases'to all of the. orifices inrsuch tip.
vided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalentof such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a burner tip having a chamber and a plurality of discharge orifices leading therefrom; of an elongated bafiie in said chamber disposed close to and in line with such orices, and adapted to distribute the fuel more or less equally between the' same.
2. In a device ofthe character described, the combination with a torch body having a socket at one end with a plurality of ports for gaseous fuel and cooling liquid; of a member formed with a head adapted to it such socket and havin a through central passage adapted to reglster with such fuel ports and two lateral chambers in communication with each other at their outer ends adapted to register with such liquidports;
a sleeve surrounding said member and engaging the, head thereon, said sleeve being individually threaded in said body, whereby said member maybe secured to the latter in Finally, by reason of the water-circulating Y the combination with a burner tip having a chamber and a plurality of alined discharge crices leading therefrom; of an elongated bafie of diamond cross-section in said chamber *disposed in line with such orifices and adaptedfto distribute the fuel more or less equally between the same.
Signed' by me, this 15 day of Aug. 1916.
