for burning 4oxygen and acetylene.
Among the object-s of the invention are the provision of a blow-pipe which shall be reliable in operation and in which the tip will not melt or oxidize the orifice and thus produce stoppage or distortion of the flame; also the provision of a blow-pipe wherein the proper mixing of the gases will be effected and in which the danger of lealtage both internally between the passages and externally to the exterior 4of the blow-pipe shall be a minimum; the provision of a device of this nature `wherein the tip may be quickly changed to adapt the parts recited in the claims hereto annexed and illustrated in the accompanying 'drawings, wherein:
Figure l represents a longitudinal sectional view taken through a blow-pipefand its handle; Fig. 2 is a sectional view 'corre-- y.spending to line QWQ of Fig. t; Fig. 3 is a sectional view corresliionding to line 3 3 of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 ris a side elevation of one of the tubes which is located in the acetylene conduit and which serves to prevent the propagation of llame therethrough.
Describing the parts by reference characters, l denotes the body or head section ofthe blow-pipe proper, said section consisting of a hollow casting of suitable metal,-
preferably brass. This casting has' a closed rear end 2 and an'open frontend 3, and is formed intermediate of its ends with an inwardly projecting annular portionl, here shown as provided with internal screw threads.
rllhe side ofthe section l is provided with a neck 6, saidneck being prorided with two passageways 7 and 8v communicating wi-th' the interior at opposite ends of theannulai' portion. 5. The outer end of the neel; G is provided with an annular groove having therein a packing 0, of asbestos or similar material. This groove is for the recept-ion 'of the end of acasing through which acetylene is supplied to the passageway 8.
The nozzle 10 is provided with a longif tudinal bore l1 for the passage of the mixed Y gases and is connected'to the section 1. rlhis nozzle is preferably of brass,.e:\cept us to the tip thereof, and comprises a tubular bodywvhose rearward end is adapted to enter the section l and whose forward end projects forwardly from said section 'to convey the mixed gases to the point of use. kThe rearward end of saidr nozzle indi-- cated generally by the ref-t encJ character l2 and has an annular portieri 123 adapted to engage the annular portion of the -section l. The portion of the casing and of the nozzle immediately fnrward of 'these annular portions are formed so as to deline an annular chember? which chan'iber is in communication with the passageway 8. The formation of the easing and or the nozzle at the rear of the annular portion is such as to provide 'a chamber l-l which is in free communication with the 'passageway 7. ln the embodiment illustrated, the chamber l has been provided by vforming an annular exterior groove in the-portion 1Q ofthe nozzle between the annular engaging portion and the end the section l; itis olwious,.liowevei". thatY this chamber could be provided in other vl ys. Likewise,

A. washer 27 maypifkdesired-7 be Ml lvlfrposed between the iiange-15 and 1the front end ofthe section- 1*. l For -.conveying the gases. to vthe proper chambers of the casing I may 'employ' thel .construction illustrated in thel lower art of Fig. 1, wherein I have `shown a tubu ar cas.-V
having-one end introduced into the annular groovehereinbefore mentioned and havin its other end closed by a suitable cap 31. troduced within this casing I have illustrated a plurality of concentric metallic tubes 32 the peripheries -whereo are 'formed with .shallow helical grooves. 33,
.whereby acetylene or other intlammablegas may beconducted from one end .of the casing to the otherwithout-'the possibility of flame passageway 7 by means of a suitable conne/c'- tion 34 threaded therein, and the .opposite vend'thereof may be provided with aconnection 35 "extending through-an aperture in the --cap 31.` '-In the present embodiment the connections 34 and 35 are secured rigidly to the ends of thelsame tube 32, and the casing -30 secured in connection with the section 1- {by means of .a-'nut 37 screwed upon the threaded 'end 36 of the connection 35, suitable packing glands being employed to prevent the leakage of gas A valved nipple 38 maybe employed to conduct oxygen or like gas to the connection'35, while va similar nipple 39 maybe empioyed for conducting acet-yleneor like combustible fluid to the intrated here as provided with a socketA for the reception of such nipple. I have .shown filled with fibrous material A40, such 'as asbespropagation' of a dame therethrough in case be .forced back' into the' oxygen conduit, and .partly to cause the oxygen to pass .in 'close 'heat therefrom and cool the acetylene. vIt `will -be understood, vhoweverthat the p'a r` ticular construction of the chamber 30 and its associated parts form nopai't of the pres# entinventiom which is directed solely tov the construction ofthe blow .pipe head. 'Likewiseit will b e understood thatwhile I. have de-v scribed in detail the vconstruction 'ofthis head, I do not propose to be limited to such details, except as the same may he positivelyv lincluded iny the claims-hereto annexed or of the. art.. v
